Four months sly
« on: November 03, 2008, 05:01:42 PM »
Today marks my fourth month of slyness.  I tried the full head shave in 2003 while vacationing at the Grand Canyon (shaved 3 times) and again while on vacation in 2006 (shaved 10 times).  Each time I let it grow back worried about what people would think.  After years of cutting my slightly receding hair short then shorter (buzzes and high and tights), I was down to a 1/16" buzz, so I finally went for the full slyness.  I have allowed it to grow out twice this summer for family functions, but after a few days, I looked in the mirror or at photos and realized I like the sly look best.  I'm not looking forward to a long cold winter, but that's what hats are for.  I like being sly and hope for a long term commitment to head shaving.

From one Bill to another .... DON'T GIVE IN TO PRESSURE.  KEEP IT SLY

I guess I was a typical first timer.  I wore a hat and avoided situations where I couldn't wear one.  The first day back at work after the Fourth of July was rough.  I had been hinting with my colleagues that I would some day shave my head, so that helped.  Having another Sly Guy in my office also helped.  He offered words of encouragement, plus finding sites like Sly Bald Guys was supportive.  Most women liked it but some guy friends were indifferent.  I now rarely wear a hat and show off my shiny dome.  I no longer have a receding hairline of graying hair.  I'm sly.  I like the look and feel confident with it.  Wish I had done it years ago!

OzPete,
How ya goin mate?

I didn't mention that my 2006 sly attempt was in Australia.  Loved the country and its people, hope to go back some day as a long term bald guy.  Toured Queensland and New South Wales.

We got as far north as Hervey Bay and spent some time on Fraser Island.  Had a wild ride on the sand dunes.

Congratulations.  I did the same thing you did for a while -- shaved and regrew and then shaved again.  For a long time I also grew back a few days' stubble for family get-togethers, etc.  I don't do that anymore, and the funny thing is, people don't seem to make a distinction between that little bit of stubble and a completely slick head.  Both are just "bald" to the rest of the world.  So, as everyone else has said, definitely don't give in to pressure.  You may have to force yourself to go to those events sly, but it's worth it and it does get easier as time goes by.
