Disclaimer: Not bald yet! Here's my story:
I'm 29. I have had almost every hair style known to man. I've had it long in a ponytail, I've had it shaved before (briefly), and buzzed several times. Back in college I buzzed it a #1 and then went an entire year without cutting or trimming (just to see what would happen). Boy, that was shaggy. At the end of the year I shaved it bald. I kept it shaved for about 2 weeks then grew it back. I didn't really have the discipline to shave it every day, and I really did look better with hair.
I think I look better with shorter hair gelled up, but it seems nature it getting in the way of that. All of a sudden recently I noticed my hairline receeding (not too much, but it happened fast), and it's not as thick on the top as it used to be. No hint of a bald spot on the back, though. It doesn't look good with gel anymore, and my wife agrees.
Speaking of the wife, she is not keen on the idea of going sly. My last haircut was short, a #3 on the sides and cut short on the top. After 3 weeks it looked bad, way too long for the thinness. I think I'm going to get another cut, a #2 on the sides and cut short on top. My idea is to have it cut short, then maybe move to a #2 buzz, then a #1, then the razor. Maybe the wife would be ok with the transition.
She says I look ok being bald, and I agree. Shaving my head every day would not be a bother at all. When I did it back in college I was surprised at how quick and easy it was.
Oh, and my hair is very dark, almost black, and a lot of people are commenting on how gray it's getting!
MPB doesn't bother me. I could care less. I know that I can look just as good shaved as I do with hair. Now that it's started to fall out, I know there is no going back, but I'm not sure how fast it will go from here.
I've never really been satisfied with my hair, even when it really was cool looking. I change haircuts all the time. For me, I've wanted to be sly just for something different. If I do, unless the MPB gets really bad, I'm not so sure I'll keep it bald.
I'll keep everyone updated.

Good luck Spence on whatever you decide. Being that you have been bald before it's not like it's something new for you. I guess your the only one you really have to please although I'm sure your listening to your wife somewhat and want to please her also. I know a lot of people who never seem to be happy with their hair no matter what kind of stlye they have. I guess I could consider myself one of them because of the big old bald spot on the back of my head
When I started buzzing my head a few years ago my wife did the honors for me. As I have said in other posts she got tired of buzzing it for me 3 times a week. When I finally shaved one night my wife was shocked and my daughter said it looked a lot better shaved. My wife is also happy she doesn't have to buzz my head anymore....so I guess we are all happy at this point.....good luck on whatever you decide
Oh yeah bro....almost forgot.....welcome to the forum....post up in the introduction section !!
Welcome to the Forum Spence...........
Welcome to the forum Spence. Sounds like you have already subconsciously made up your mind. If you stick around here, you'll probably shave it sooner than later, but do it when it feels right ... which will probably be tonight
I would do it today if I didn't have to answer to an unhappy wife when I got out of the bathroom.

If I gradually cut/buzz it down over time, it may give everyone more time to warm up to it so it isn't a drastic change.
Also if I buzz it down real short I may get a tan on my head before I shave.
Spence, welcome!!! Prior to going sly, I gradually buzzed it down over several months, then once I found this great forum, went sly and haven't looked back. As long as you're comfortable with it, that's all that matters!
Spence,
Welcome to SBG.
Be sure to read some of the shaving routines in the forum. Getting it smooth in 5 minutes and then just putting some gel on could shed new light also.
Nothing better than a smooth dome, plus alot of women have found "benifits" of a smooth dome
hey spence: welcome 2 the sly fraternity. like champ stated: check out the HEADSHAVING section of the forum ("your shave routine", "what razor you use", etc) & gain some knowledge b4 U shave your noggin'. we hope that U become an active member of the best forum on the internet. keep us posted 2 your road 2 slyness.

WARHAWK
Well I made an appointment for a haircut on Friday. Maybe it will be my last. I'm going to get it buzzed to a #2 on the sides and cut short on top. I suspect that I may look even thinner on top, so I'll see about buzzing it a #2 all around a week or two later. If I don't get too much grief from the wife, I'll go to a #1.
One thing I hate is paying for haircuts. I just see it as a waste of money. In the past, I looked better with a professional cut, but now it seems that with a receeding hairline and thinning on top the best look may be sly.
I've read all sorts of shaving techniques here. When I shaved it several years ago, I think I just lathered on shave gel in the shower and used whatever razor I had at the time. I remember it working out fine.
When I brought it up to my wife, she wasn't too happy either. So I followed the path you are considering. I just buzzed it down and down and down over several months.
One night, I came out of the shower and TA - DA! She likes it!
I wore my hair at a no guard clip for about 5 years before going all the way and welcome to the site. Bunch of usefull info here.
Welcome to SBG's Spence. Sounds like you are well on your way to being sly.
It doesn't matter how long it takes, don't feel pressured. You will do it when it feels right for you.
Most of us here have gone the same route, gradually buzzing down to a close crop, which looks good, especially with mpb.
I think you should take it down to a 1 buzz, see how you like that. Then you can take it even further to a 0 or no guard, and see how it feels. I know when I did it I couldn't wait to shave it. This also allows you to slowly get some sun on the noggin' and even up the color.
And maybe the wife will get used to it being shorter.
Good luck
