Anvil's pet thread got me thinking about this.....

I've talked about my old greyhound, Lager, several times in the past. Well we got him when my son Kody was just about 1.5 years old. As I've said before, Kody started having seizures when he was about 8-9 months old.

A few months after we got Lager a very unusual thing happened. One evning Kody was playing right in front of me and my wife and he got up to bring one of us a toy. As he came toward us Lager quickly walked up to him and just as Lager reached him Kody stopped, stood very still, and got very quiet. This always signaled that a seizure was about to happen. Well Kody placed his arm over Lager's back and seized for his usual 30 seconds or so. As soon as he was done, Lager went and laid down.
I looked at my wife and her mouth was hanging open and I said' What did you just see?". She replied, "Lager held Kody up while he had that seizure". Exactly what I had seen.
So at first we thought it was a coincidence, but after that when Kody was getting ready to seize, even before we knew he was getting ready to, Lager would walk up to him, Kody would hold on and have the seizure, and then Lager would go back to whatever he was doing. This went on for years until Kody stopped having seizures four years later.
Not long after the first incident with Lager, I saw a show on TV about "seizure dogs". Apparently, some breeds can sense when some people are about to have seizures. In the show I saw a lady, that had seizures, was on a dock and was about to enter the water when her lab prevented her form getting in the water over and over again by blocking her way. Well she immediately seized right on the dock..... that Lab saved her life.

The day the greyhpound group called to tell me they had me a dog and that I should come see if he was a good fit for us, my wife said to me, "Of course he's meant for you, his name is "Lager"".
Little did I know on that day that he was sent for a more important reason.

When I had to have that old boy put done with cancer it broke Kody's heart. He cried like I'd never seen him cry before or since. I think a small part of all our souls left with Lager that day.
We all still miss him terribly........... :'(

Int he mid 90's I had a female boxer named Lucy.....I had no children, and she had never been around kids before, till my best friend and his wife came over with their new born baby girl.  We introduced the baby to Lucy.  She was very interested in the baby.  The mom put the baby on mt king size bed for a nap, piled pillows around the baby to stop the kid from rolling off.  We went out to play cards.  After about 20 minutes, Lucy came out of the bedroom and went to the Mother and just stared at her, then ran back into the bedroom.  Lucy did this about 3 times and we finally followed the dog.  Upon entering the bedroom we found that the baby HAD rolled off the bed, but landed on all the pillows.  Lucy knew something was wrong and she knew who the mother was........

We moved onto a house here in Oregon that had a fenced front yard.......Lucy loved kids and a bunch of children would play with her in the front yard.  She would not let any of them leave the yard unless their Mothers would come and get them or we took them home.....If anyone other than a mother came to the gate she would raise holy hell about it........

Should have charged a baby sitting fee..... :D
I was told to think outside the box, how did I get in the box in the first place?

Great story SiG!!! That reminds me of this....

My only neighbor up here on the mountain lives about 300 feet away. They are a couple with no kids but they have an American Staffordshire Terrier that is their "baby".
They got her as a puppy one week before me moved in. So my kids have grown up with her (6 years). My kids are always over there playing with her and if a strange car comes onto our little cul-de-sac she puts herself between the kids and the car and raises Hell.

I never worry about my kids when she is around......

I had a dog named Snoopy.  I got him when I was about 5 years old and he lived for over 15 years.  My dad use to smoke and he would throw the cigarette butt towards him while it was still lit.  Snoopy would roll it around until the it quit burning and then he would chew the left over tabacco out of it.  I know...crazy but he lived a long time...maybe the tabacco helped...lol

My moms little mixed collie would stand on her hind legs and dance around under the ouside dryer vent getting a "blow dry" as my  Mom says. That little dog would just yip and yelp under the warm air having a good old time. The dog knew when someone put a load of clothes in to dry

I used to have a Boxer named Jabby, and every few months she would have a little "PROBLEM". She liked to play with my work socks (out of my combat boots) and roll around it my uniform after work.

One day I noticed her having some trouble going to the bathroom. (#2) She was scooting all over the place trying to get something out of her behind. I went out to see what the problem was and fell down laughing at what I saw! She had about six inches of tube sock hanging out of her butt. I got a pair of pliers, and pulled the rest of the sock out, Jabby started to run and jump and play, as if that was the best help she had ever recieved from me.

This happened about ten times before we had to put her to sleep (she was 13) and everytime she was as happy as could be, to get those darn socks un-plugged!

The picture is a few months before she got to go to "Doggie-Heaven", she was a great bud! ( I would trade all my socks to have her back!)

My current pets haven't done anything all that unusual.

But as I've posted elsewhere, I grew up in a home where my mom was an exotic animal consultant.  So we had all kinds of crazy pets....and crazy happenings.

One story that comes to mind quickly is.....about 20 years ago my mom had a rather large chimpanzee--Mr. Coleman.   He had been raised in a home and was VERY domesticated and while very STRONG, was quite gentle.

Well, he escaped from his enclosure at my moms house and proceeded to go into the house and use the toilet, check out the cupboards, open the fridge, etc...

So we're in the house and my mom is instructing everyone to remain calm while she gathered her volunteers to round Mr. Coleman up and get him back into his enclosure.

So we're all getting a kick out of following Mr. Coleman around watching him tool around and do his thing.

Well, Aunt Hazel (in her 70's or 80's) meets up with Mr. Coleman in the hallway and she proceeds to start freaking out....screaming and hollering.

So Mr. Coleman calmly walks up to Aunt Hazel--obviously irritated at her un-called-for histerics--puts his hand on her ear and with one swift motion, SLAMS Aunt Hazel to the floor....her ear hitting the floor before her feet.

Then Mr. Coleman calmy proceeded to the living room to check out the scented candles.

TRUE STORY !!!

(Aunt Hazel was ok and has since passed away, God Bless her)

My family had a miniature poodle when I was a kid, were talkin 20+ years ago when I was in high school. It was a weekend and I was up late watching TV (at low volume so as not to wake the folks upstairs) and I heard this strange sound. Sounded like gurgling water, odd sound to hear at 1am. So I keep listening for the sound that's coming and going, trying to track it down. I turn the corner into the den and there's the poodle, snout completely in her water bowl blowing bubbles out of her nose.

I never laughed so hard and never witnessed her doing it again.

That and my current Dobie 1 1/2 yr old puppy will put up to 8 milkbones in his mouth at one time. He constantly picks up 2 or 3 toys at once. Likes to find socks, holds them in his mouth so you can't see them and then picks up his giant red kong bone and walks around. I've seen him stand in front of me and drop everything at once. Giant bone, 2 milkbones, some kibble and a sock. I'm afraid he might choke one day but I haven't a clue how to stop him from doing this. Plus its pretty damn cute.

My mom had a boxer when I was about 2-3, and my father was working on the ships whenever he came home the dog wouldn't let Dad go near me. And when mom took me swimming the dog would pull us both out.

I have many many interesting stories about my critters. No good ones about the dogs, they just herd and lay around and eat. I do have a funny story about a goose we had and my wife. We had a pair of white chinese geese that nested out in the pasture at the old house. I told my wife how protective he was of the goose and she didnt believe me so she went out there to check on the goose. I was on the deck watching to see when the gander would start charging her. Well I didnt see the gander and I dont think she did either and she made it all the way to the nest. All of a sudden I saw a white blurr come from around the bush while my wife was knelt down with the goose, it was the gander. He flew and grabbed the back of her coat and held on. She came running back towards the house with the gander still on her back and then she tripped about half way back. The whole time she is screaming and the goose is beating her with his wings and I was laughing my butt off. As soon as she was down the gander bit her hair and started trying to pull it out, he was just beating the tar out of her. She got up and started running to the house again and the gander was still chasing her, he kept nipping at her legs. She made it to the gate and couldnt get it open and he was ripping into her. I sent the dogs out and they tried to get him away but he was evil. Finally she climbed over the gate and came back to the house, she was all bruised up and the back of her leg was bleeding all from that evil gander. As soon as we sold the goslings we butchered him, he was way too aggressive. Just incase anyone was wondering, a gander is a male goose.

This winter I was shoveling snow with my dog when another dog walked by, to keep my dog from running off, I asked him if he wanted to go for a ride and I opened up the door on my jeep.  he jumped in, I shut the dog and went on shoveling until the other dog was gone.  After the other dog was long gone I opened the door and my dog wouldn't get out.  I went inside got some dog treats and he still wouldn't get out.  I tried pulling him out but to no avail.  I finally gave up, went and got my keys, hopped in the jeep and drove around the block.  we got back to the house and I opened his door and he jumped out with his tail wagging.
