My user name is FutureSlyGuy.  I've picked this name because I'm not sly yet, but one day I almost certainly will be! And that fact that I will be, is something that occupies my mind and is something I'm yet to embrace.

I'm presently a NW2, but I have minor thinning over the top of my head.  But this is what makes it strange: no one else (except my close family) has noticed!!  I can see it gradually happening and know that one day I must embrace it, as one day other people will start to notice too.

This is hard for me for two reasons.  Firstly everyone in my family going back three generations has a full head of hair, with one exception: my great uncle.  My hair looks exactly like his!  I feel so unlucky given it was so unlikely.  Secondly, and this will sound conceited, I'm quite proud of my appearance.  My whole life I've had girls treating me far better than my peers, and it's become a part of my self esteem and self image.  A major change in my appearance threatens this, and scares me to the bone.

I've never joined an online community like this before.  But I had to join SBGs because it's simply brilliant!  This place is full of guys that embrace who they are, they way the look, and make the world embrace them rather than wonder why they don't look like the Hollywood A list with transplants and wigs.

This place makes almost proud to one day be sly.  It's positive, supportive and not bitter or recentful.

Thank you BALDANDRE - I think you're dead right!  Going SLY early and loving it would be the best possible outcome for me. 

I think one of the hardest things about the balding process is you can see it coming.  I imagine that it's a bit like pulling of a bandaid: if you just do it, it doesn't hurt.  But if you see if coming and take your time, it hurts like hell!

I totally agree about Matt McCounahey; he looks fantastic bald.  I understand why he thinks he has a professional need to have hair, but if more guys like him shaved their heads the baldness would be more accepted and we'd suffer far less anxiety.

It's a bit like Hollywood giving young girls complexes by showing surgically enhanced women with 20 inch waists and double D boobs... very few people can achieve that naturally.

But thanks again.  I think it's going to take me a bit of time to build up to being sly.  I'm going to have to start with progressively shorter buzz cuts and the one day all the way.

No one else has noticed because the rest of the world doesn't pay as much attention to our appearances as we think they do.  It's just not that big a deal to everyone else.  Nor will it be a big deal when the time comes to shave.  Trust me -- been there, done that.   Just stick around, watch, and learn and you'll be fine.

In middle age we don't care what other people think about us.

When we're old we realize other people didn't think about us at all.

FSG, welcome to Sly Bald Guys!  Stick around, ask questions, and you'll soon start to realize that we tend to make a bigger deal about our appearance than other people do.  The best part for you is that if other people aren't noticing that you're going bald, you can shave and say you're Bald By Choice and they'll never know.
