It does change the meaning just a bit, doesn't it?
Don't feel bad. I'm usually pretty good with most of the Brit-slang but I didn't know that particular one until a couple of years ago. On a dog forum, someone got a new puppy and wanted to name her Fanny -- and all the Brits were laughing and saying, "You can't call her Fanny", which naturally led to people asking why not ....
