Head Shaving Enjoyable??
« on: June 15, 2008, 11:45:04 AM »
I was wondering...I keep reading where people love shaving their head and wouldn't give it up for anything...when does the enjoyment start???  While I love the look...when I finish shaving my head it burns for hours and I have razor bumbs.  I use Bald Guyz shave gel and a fusion razor and end with 100% Clear Aloe as an after shave.  What am I doing wrong???

Personally, for me it's all in the preparation. I hop into a hot shower, wash my head, use some conditioner to soften up the hairs, then soak for an extra minute or two. I use King of Shaves ASC gel with antibacterial protection, I recommend checking it out to help with the bumps/irritation. Also, where you have bumps, maybe you could go with the grain to help reduce the strain on your skin? Not sure if you're already trying that, but that might be something to consider.

Good luck!

This is my first post here.

I would not say it is "enjoyable"--it takes me about 12-15 minutes and I've been shaving my head for almost eight years.  It may depend on how often you shave.  If you have sensitive skin, you may only be able to shave every other day (like me).  I have not used Headblade, but I have heard a few people who swear they are able to shave their head every day with no irritation.  I am not there yet.

My experience with disposable and cartridge razors is that my scalp likes a comfort strip more than not.  I use a triple-bladed comfort strip Schick--and shaving up and down until smooth and I have no irritation at least 36 hours in between shaving.

Also, you don't and should not press hard or shave in one place incessantly.

I don't know if that helps, but I wanted to respond.

It takes a little while for your scalp to adjust to being shaved and toughen  up.  In the meantime, try shaving with the grain, not against it.  You won't get as close a shave, but you should experience less irritation.  Hang in there; it is worth it.

Also try a cold water rinse or rub your head with an ice cube. Both are a bit "extreme" (especially if you just finished a hot shower).

I have found both methods reduce razor burn and bumps, and may be something for you to look into.

I must honestly say that I like the result, but the process isn't always fun and enjoyable. >:(

It can be a chore.  Sometimes I don't mind doing it and other times I really wish I didn't have to.   But with a little experimentation and perserverance, annoyances like bumps and razor burn can be dealt with.   8)

I enjoy the shaving routine.... mainly because I feel really good and look so damn "slick" when done.

I find it enjoyable.  I think we need to address your shave routine.  What is your routine?  Are you a shower shaver or a sink shaver?

sounds sad, I know, and maybe I should get out more, but i actually quite enjoy it.  Only takes ten mins or so anyway, and I feel good and refreshed after. 8)

The ends justify the means. You just need to find the "means" that works best for you.

WOW!  Thanks everyone for all of your pointers.  I shaved in the hot shower and then rubbed ice on my head and voila no more bumps or irritation!  Shaving your head can be enjoyable.

I was a sink shaver but not anymore!  It's the shower from now on!  :-)
