I'd buy more ammo...then you can shoot more food.
That was my strategy on The Oregon Trail for DOS. I never understood why everyone always died about a month into the trip....

or how you always seemed to be able to walk across the rivers that were 20 ft deep but end up drowning or wrecking in the 5 ft ones lol. -
