Bowhunting Season Opener Success
« on: September 01, 2007, 08:29:50 PM »
Well I just got back from the hunting trip, and man was it a heart thumper of a day.

We started off where we had to park and walk in because of a hard rain last night, the road into the back section was a bog, and would have caused us to get stuck.

Well we started walking out across the mint field that had been cut so the little stubs created noise, and there was no getting around it, so I looked like a robot steppin up then down etc.  Well we also had a fog which made seeing kind of hard as well.  But finally got some clear up about 1,000 yards into the mint field.  I glassed a nice buck far off judging about 500 yards off right at the edge of the timber and mint field feeding.

I started my focus as this was a nice buck from what I could tell even at this distance.  As I got closer, up came the bucks head and he was staring right at me, I thought it had been blown and he would be on the run.  I was wrong as he put his head back down and continued to feed.  I kept telling myself to keep the focus, keep the focus.  As I continued a slow step of 1, 2 ,3 then stop.... again and again.  He would pop his head up and look again, I froze like a statue, my brother in-law and son stayed back just letting me do my thing.

I closed in with my heart racing and thumping I thought the buck would hear me coming in and closing the gap.  I got to within about 50 yards, and the buck lifted his tail letting go his droppings.  I'm thinking this is it as a sign he will surely take off.  After he finished his business, he turned and just bounded off.

Regardless of the outcome, it felt good as the rush of the hunt.  He would have been a very nice buck to have on the wall with what looked like a 30" spread on the inside of his antlers.  Massive beams and all, what a rush it was being there to experience this.  As I turned to head back to my son and brother in-law a group came bounding into the mint field with another nice buck in the middle of the group.  To far to take a shot but at least the deer were on the move.

We moved on as we all enjoyed what we had encountered this morning.  After finding a place to set up...

.... we waited for more, but only a couple of does and fawns were found on the farm.  We did get to see a bald eagle flying close to us, and I looked at my brother in-law and told him that native americans believe when you see one, its going to be a good day.  Well we figured that we would return later today, or tomorrow morning to set up and wait and see what presented itself to us.

So my son and I then left the farm, and headed off to my Aunt and Uncles spread up the road.  We scouted the whole spread, and not finding any sign, we decided that, a late afternoon hunt would probably be best when the deer come down to go water in the valley.

Well, as we were walking back low and behold a buck jumped up from his bed, and gave me a nice broadside pose.  I drew back and let the 100 gr G5 Striker tipped Carbon Express Terminator fly.  The arrow found its mark, and I must say I have never arrowed a buck in velvet on the opener of bow season.

Counting the points, this deer turned out to be 5 points on one side and 3 points on the other.

I would say, heck you bet it turned out to be a great day!

Congrats bro!  That's a beautiful buck!

Actually I only take a little, and donate the rest to a very much needy family of 6.  I enjoy the "Spirit of the Hunt" and the "Challenge of the Hunt" when put up against the odds stalking.

Being a bowhunter, yes, you can take to a tree stand to put yourself above it all and be more successful on your game.  But I love to "Spot and Salk" the hunt.  It requires that I maintain my skill that requires practice, and lots of fine tuning, but it is attainable by anyone who wants to learn.

Anyone can use a rifle to hunt with, but I choose to bowhunt, as it gets me as close as possible and its a RUSH man.

I have always wanted to hunt but in reality I am not much of an outdoor's man. although I truely love wild meat. I am glad that you don't let it go to waste, donating it to a family is a truly nice thing to do. I presonally wish I knew a hunter in canada that didn't like to eat the meat that much because I would truely love to have a deer in my freezer

Here is a web site for you then http://www.laredohuntclub.com/Elk_Deer_Combos/Elk_Deer_ComboFactSheet.html

Find a meat processor in your area, and they may know some organization like Salvation Army or some food pantry that helps those in need, or even contact a church in your area.  Many programs to help those in real need of meat that are on public assistance.

If you have the "Spirit of the Hunt" in your heart, then get started the Karma will return to you 10X my SBG friend and brother.

Tomorrow we go out to fill my doe tag should one present itself to me.

Someday I want to get up north of you into the Yukon Ter area and bowhunt Caribou.

It's great you have programs in your area that allow such donations.  In my deer wreck of 2005, I called the sheriff's department to come pick up the deer; at one time they used it at the correctional facility to supplement their meat budget.  I was told they could no longer use any meats that were not slaughtered and processed to USDA standards (and apparently a Jeep d/n meet such); an inmate had filed a formal complaint about being served "roadkill".    A charity would be your best bet

My cousin went bear hunting in Canada with a crossbow and bagged one.

The other 10 people on the trip, including myself and my uncle, were armed with high powered rifles. My cousin is one crazy SOB

I used to hunt, even bow hunted some, from a stand.  I still have my bow but haven't shot it in years.  I was at Gander Mountain looking at bows a couple weeks ago.  Boy, they sure have changed, lighter, smaller, I may get back into shooting if I can find a place around here.

With the baby being born this Oct.  I won't be able to make my annual trip to Montana or Idaho to hunt Elk and Deer.  Though, next year, I'm back!

Nice going J_B, I'm envious.  Don't get to get buck fever for another 12 days.  And what a great thing to do with that great meat too

Actually you would be much better serverd going to the NWT around a small Town Called Fort Macpherson. I don't think many people "hunt" caribou anymore, it seems more like a shooting gallery. They herd them toward the hunters and they blast away as many as they can get.. I use to live in a Town CAlled Inuvik NWT and it's not far from Fort MAcPherson, anyway I'll do what I can to see if i can find you a guide.

As for meat for the needy, I don't excatly need it, i just love the stuff.
