Skull Shaver
« on: April 14, 2014, 08:59:06 AM »
I don't know if this has been posted before but I thought I'd throw it out there if not (apologies if it's a dupe!):

http://amzn.to/1rBH8o9

I had mixed feelings about this. It looked like a really neat product and I really wanted to try it. So I ponied up and bought one.

First of all, the drawbacks:
The charger takes a long time to charge the unit and the LED for the charging/full indicator is on the power supply itself. It's a little awkward to hold at first and the power button is on the base, where you easily turn it back on if you bump it. The 'neck' feels a little flimsy if you pick it up and the plastic cover for the blades doesn't snap on too well. It also doesn't shave anywhere near close as a blade or even my electric shaver.

Now, the positives:
It does do a pretty good job - especially when you might have an additional day's growth and want to shorten it up - of getting your hair respectably short. It does help when you want to lessen the stress of shaving with a blade and your hair is a tad longer or you're in a hurry and don't have time/resources for a full wet shave. It also is comfortable to use, the heads pivot and contour so you can rub it all over your head, although the sideburn area/front of the ears is a little tricky. If you go too fast it won't work as well, and I have found that using it in a circular motion is the most effective. It's especially nice cutting down the areas where the hair is the thickest. It's also good for a prepping your head before a luxurious wet shave down to the skin.

The battery life seems really decent and it holds a charge for a long period of time - although there is no indicator on the unit to indicate how much battery is left. The pivoting 'neck' is a nice feature in helping the heads contour to your noggin.

Overall, I would say it's a nice addition to your grooming 'wardrobe' - not an absolute necessity of course, but a nice addition. If you're thinking about getting one it's a nice little unit, it travels pretty well (save the box it comes in though!) and is small and compact. Holding the battery unit takes a little getting used to, but it does have grooves for your fingers (a nice touch) and the battery stays cool even after a few minutes of use. It is not water friendly though so you have to be careful cleaning it and you can't use it in the shower.

A nice little package which really is handy in a pinch. If you want to give it a try, I suggest you do. If you own one or have used one, post a reply and let us all know what you think... after all their are smart and worldy guys - and gals - out there who know lots of great info!

Unfortunately no, it's dry only. It has a "no water" sticker on the base.

I tried this thing. Bought it before I went on a road trip so I could use it on the road in a pinch and be done with it. Performed so bad and cut my head and face up badly. Definitely avoid at all costs. Plus the thing takes like six hours to charge.

G-Bald -  Thanks for the very objective and comprehensive review!  I had been looking at that shaver, more as a curiosity than something I would actually use.  Good to know where it falls in between a blade and an electric.  Maybe if they drop the price by half I'll pick one up just to mess around with LOL

This is just another gimmick. Do any of you remember the "rolling razor"?

I know it seems "gimmicky" but it works pretty well.

I did run into an issue with it (battery seems dead) - I contacted their support and heard back pretty quickly, one troubleshooting step did not work so they are sending a new charger FOC to make sure that is ruled out.
