I have started to use a double edge razor to get a closer shave but the Gillette gel shaving creme is not living up to my expectations. I get a great shave but the razor clogs up quickly. Any advice from fellow DE shavers?

Scrap the canned stuff. It's all pretty lousy.
Get yourself a decent shaving brush and some good shave soap.
Look at the Vulfix brushes and the RazoRock shave soaps here:
www.italianbarber.comI also recommend Cella shave soap (same site).
They are a Canadian company but their service is excellent and prices are good.

I agree with Mike on the Shave Brush, but if you can't get your hands on Shaving Soap right away, Shave Secret and Headslick are nice alternatives. And you only need a few drops of the former, and only a capful of the latter. Good Luck!

Cella is a favorite of mine, but I'd also recommend soaps from The Shave Den. Joanna makes an incredible lanolin shave soap in 88 different frags that leave your skin feeling oh so soft and supple.

Thanks for the hint... I've bookmarked them for a future purchase.

You won't regret it, as they start lathering themselves when a brush gets near them.

the aerosol stuff doesn't work for me anymore. one of my current favs is the Proraso shave soap in a tub (white tub, sensitive skin formula). I really like the scent and I find that I get a good, thick lather.
Occasionally, someone will get me a can of the aerosol. I'll try it and then I'm reminded why I now prefer headslick for my head, and shave soap for my face.

Poraso is good stuff, I've switched to Taylor of old bond street as I prefer the scent of it. Really though if you get Poraso or Taylor you can't go wrong. Experiment and see what soap you prefer.
