Surviving such dangerous times...
« on: June 08, 2007, 02:07:33 AM »
I thought this was great!!

 Those Born 1930-1979!

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930’s 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn’t get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking. As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with sugar, but we weren’t overweight because WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING !

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day.

And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo’s, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD’s, no surround-sound or CD’s, no cell phones, no personal computer! s, no Internet or chat rooms…….WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them . . . CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn’t it?!

That's spot on Tyler,

This is from a BBC report from a cpl of days back :

"In 1970 the average nine-year-old girl would have been free to wander 840 metres from her front door. By 1997 it was 280 metres.

Now the limit appears to have come down to the front doorstep."

The whole article is here : http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/6720661.stm

I think it's a real shame for the kids but I guess that's the world we live in today.  Sad really.

Oh & happy birthday by the way!  P@^

His heed was ballid, and schon as eny glas

Good one Tyler ... You just described my childhood.  Dang I feel for today's kids

I had seen that before, but it's always good to re-read something like that.

Your perspective is about to change big time. You go from idealist to realist in the blink of an eye.

Good posts.  We are now living with the results of the "Great Society", out of control entitlements, out of control political correctness, the "hyphenating of America", the "victimizing" of America, the belief that bad and illegal behavior is "cultural diversity", erosion of the Bill of Rights, educated adults speaking like babies(the "H word, the F word, the N word, the S word...), no border security and the stupid belief that illegal immigrants don't "join" America; we "join" them..., the liberal media bashing fatherhood, Christians, Jews, and "apologizing to radical Muslims(just like Nancy Pelosi...) for being "America".

In our country today, we have no "winners" because that would "offend" the losers so we no longer have or teach sportsmenship and honor in either winning with grace or losing with pride and honor.

I think Amercia is well into it's sunset years-thank the no values liberals in Congress.

I know man!  My wife and I had a discussion about it the other day when I said I wanted to tear down the fence in the front yard so our kids could play on the grass.  She was like, "Then anyone can come up on the lawn.  Don't you think we should have a fence to protect them?"  I was thinking, "Time to move to the country!"

Like the other said, i've come across that, but it's a cool reminder...

Your perspective is about to change BIG TIME...mine has in just these past 9-10 months!

Keep the kids in the backyard!

No more "wonder years" going on in neighborhoods much these day....

Life is still real good though...just different time! O0

skinhead002, I swear we must be related.  Either that, or I'm in a Twilight Zone episode, and someone has copied my brain and given it to you.  It is truly sad how kids can't be kids anymore.  Summers were great... hanging with friends, going to the pool, park, etc. without parents freaking out about us being gone all day, maybe checking in for lunch.  I distinctly remember hearing my dad calling me to supper.  Of course we'd go back out after supper to enjoy the last bits of daylight.  Our kids are really cheated today... too many freaks, predators, etc. and a society that panders to those people's issues about what made them that way instead of harshly punishing them.  OK, I'll stop now.
How is that Hopey / Changey thing working for you?
