Taking the Plunge?
« on: May 18, 2007, 12:16:53 AM »
What's up Sly Guys?  I'm new on here and trying to decide if I wanna go for the full SLY look or not.  I've been surfin' around your board for about 2 wks and I'm impressed by your confidence and I'm hoping some of yours will give me the boost I need to take the plunge. My hairline's been receding since I was about 19, but it's gotten worse in the last 4-5 years and I think it's making me look old and I'm only 28!

I have tried growing my hair out, but the recession is still pretty obvious.  I'm close to my family but for the most part they're all telling me how crazy  :/O I'll look.   For about the last 6 months I've been buzzing my hair down a little bit more and more (most recently using no guard, but it's been about 2 weeks since I buzzed last).  Take a look at my pic and give me your honest opinions.  I think this is a great forum BTW  O0  !

There's only one way to find out, bro. Set those clippers to a #1 cut and have at it. You won't regret it.

I agree, shave it down and see how you like it.  We usually recommend to keep shaving it for 30 days to see how you like it.  I'm sure you'll dig it!

gradual works.

That's what I was doing. And one day my receptionist told me to shave it.

I did and to my surprise it was no biggie to those around me. The #2 and then #1 clippers are so close to shaved that no one notices.

KySly-Do it man! I had a full head of hair all my life until I told a barber
to shorten my hair. To my surprise he put on a #2 blade a buzzed me!!
But liked it! Went out to the car and my wife didn't recognize me!
But has grown to love it!! Family will get used to the bald look, no doubt, mine did!!

I agree with the rest, do a gradual change!!
And post different pics each change and get our opinions!!! P@^

Hey KySly...

If the thought to go the slick sly route is in your head...you wont fully be happy until you shave it smooth...

You should give it a try and keep it smooth for at least 2-3 weeks to make a desicion to keep it or grow it..

you should give it a try..life's too short not to do it!

100% the opposite.

Sly guys LOVE being sly.

Can be a pain to maintain, but most here seem to look forward to the morning shave.

I think it will look pretty good; it would have been nice to see it when you had it buzzed with no guard.  Your hair must grow pretty fast.  I don't think mine would be that long after only 2 weeks.  What was the reaction you received 2 weeks ago?  I think you should go for it and keep it slick for a month (usually everyone's advice).  Although I'm not the best judge of people's age, I would have probably guessed you are in your mid-30's with your current pic.  As far as people thinking you're crazy, they're crazy for not wanting you to be happy.  Good luck!
How is that Hopey / Changey thing working for you?

Welcome Scott to SBG's....you've come to the right place for advice and support. Based on your pic, you will do great going sly....it will definitely make you look younger (took 10 years off for me).
Once you start thinking about doing it....it is inevitable, so go for it....you can always grow it back if you don't like it.
Was one of the best decisions I have made.
Good luck....keep us posted

The decision on whether or not to shave my head totally SLY has been driving me crazy!  So, today as I was preparing to shave my face, I finally took the plunge and shaved my head.  The whole process was intoxicating!  I loved the look & feel of my newly SLY head.  I guess now I'm an official SLY BALD GUY!  You guys were right - once the idea was in my head, I just had to do it.  So far, I'm loving it!
