Am I too anal about missed spots ?
« on: May 25, 2012, 02:02:23 PM »
I know this has prob been discussed before but I wanted to get an up to date consensus from you guys. I always end up taking 20 extra minutes to go over every single missed spot until the dome is perfectly smooth. ( btw  its not even a missed spot. Its just an un smooth spot)

No one would even notice these spots except for me but I still think I'm too anal about it.

Do you guys shave and do your routine and if you feel scruff , do you let it go since you'll be shaving the next day anyway ?

The reason I ask is because no one would even notice the spots but I still take the extra time which means I can't shave in morning.

How many of you guys don't require the perfect shave every time ?

Maybe I'm alone in this but every time I've tried for a perfect shave I end up with nicks. And in a few cases I've gashed myself pretty bad.
So now I try to just get a good shave and not worry about a few missed spots (which for me are typically around and behind my ears).

Being anal retentive carries with it a negative connotation. It implies a psych issue. I don't that's the case with you. I think you just like your scalp to be smooth.

I'm pulling my chair up to the "very fussy" table as well - if it's worth doing at all, it's worth doing to a very high standard (if not perfection).

Thanks. At least it's not just me. Part of me says to just let it go because it will have stubble again anyway in 8 hours but the other part of me wants it perfect. I know I can get away with a damn near close shave with some fuzz in 5 minutes and no one will notice since no one touches my head. And even when looking closely you can't tell that it's a missed spot because all it really is , is 1/100 of a cm long which is why we feel the stubble but then the other part of me just wants it to be smooth. Then the entire crazy process starts all over again the next day lol. I'm gonna try to see how I feel when I just leave some rough spots as long as they aren't visible and see how I feel

I used to shave every 2-4 days, then I started shaving every day, and am now shaving every other day.  I find shaving every other day is the best way for me in regards to smoothness and time management.  It seems easier to hit the "missed" spots with fewer passes.  When I shaved everyday I found that it was harder to get a completely smooth shave without irritation.

I'm thinking that since there's already so little growth after ~24 hours I'm pressing harder to get a smoother shave, and it also takes longer.  After 2-3 days of growth all you have to do is glide the blade along for one long pass and then go back and re-lather to get the trouble spots.  Zero irritation and a quicker, closer shave IMO.  For me, it's also nice because you get that great feeling of a slick dome once every couple days instead of shaving being so routine that the slickness is not as exciting and tactilely pleasing.

Count me in the " I don't wanna miss a spot" club. I've gotten so good lately that if I miss a spot it's above the ears which I hardly rub anyway when I do rub my head...As has been said many times "Only another sly guy will know if you missed something!"

I am glad to know I'm not the only one who feels the need to get totally smooth. I am 35 days into daily shaving and find myself going over any areas that feel a little rough. in the end it seems like you can't see the difference when you don't go back over them but I am going for that totally smooth feel and look too. The only problem is that this is when I can mess up and nick myself always wishing I had quite while I was ahead. I do hope I can reduce the time I am taking to do this. Anyone have advice? thanks

I'm definitely happy that I'm not alone. My issue is when I try to hard and when I push too hard I end up getting irritation and that causes a lot of problems down the road when it comes to ingrown hairs.

I guess I need to find a middle ground between enough smoothness without irritation and without pushing too hard and then again if I don't get it all in one shot the hair will be there in eight hours again for me to try it all over again.

On my next shave I'll use my normal razor and anything I miss ill go over with the electric to try to minimize razor burn

Clean & smooth here too.
Personally, I'd rather skip a day (or two), than have a perfectly smooth dome except for a "dental floss wide" strip that I missed.

Seriously, that would ruin my day.

I have to jump on the "can't stand it if I missed a spot" bandwagon.  It has to be totally slick and smooth.  Like the some of the others, I have found that at times when I have had to skip a day, the next days shave is much, much smoother and lasts longer too.

Probably sacrilegious but this is how I deal with this problem, and I too am obsessive about missing spots.

I do my normal shower & shave with my trusty fusion and matte for me gel. Then if I want to make sure I'm really, really, really smooth I dry my head off then take a disposable bic to it. This does the business for me.
