Howdy from Aggieland (Texas A&M University)
Newly shorn 39 year old who decided to take charge of my head before it took charge of me! Been greying for sometime, and over the last year my hairline is heading south...and north, east, and west. Not much, but decided to have my hairstylist (nope, not a barber--but she was trained as one), do the deed with no guard yesterday. Surprise the wife, who had heard me talk about it but never thought I would actually go thru with it.
I wore it shaved for about 2 years while in college, but it's been about 15 years since I've shaved it!
The kids love it, and insist on rubbing my head every chance they can! I will eventually use a blade on it, but want to get some color, get rid of the flaking, and some of the redness before doing this.
I've been lurking for a few days, and all of your thoughts gave me the courage to go thru with it!
Looking forward to getting more input on techniques, products, etc!

Welcome to the world of sly.
Went sly myself just over 2 months. You'll soon get the hang of a daily routine. And you won't get bored of the smooth feel.

Welcome! If you're buzzed down with no guard, you're nearly there. Why not go all the way and get the color on a completely smooth head? The flaking and redness might go away more quickly, too.
Once you start shaving, you'll love it and become a pro!

Welcome to the forum, and a new found freedom. With time your scalp will "toughen up."
As warhawk has suggested, there are plenty of sections to check out for more information. I also suggest using a Mach III for your first shave of the dome. It's a great razor. Be sure to buzz down your remaining hair as close as you can with clippers. Good luck and let us know how you like it.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. After all the encouragement, how could a guy not go for it!
So, I took the plunge this morning and shaved it clean! Used a Schick Hydro 3 razor and my trusty Art of Shaving supplies and badger brush.
