Newly Bald & Loving it!
« on: April 09, 2012, 09:46:48 PM »
Hey All,

So I've been lurking on this forum for a few weeks now, and after buzzing my head a few times, a couple of weeks ago I decided to give it a shave.

I just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone for contributing to this forum as i'm loving the new look! the stories that people share here along with the words of encouragement really make the process a lot easier.

To all the people still on the fence about whether to shave or not - this may sound a bit redundant but seriously just DO IT! You'll need to accept the fact that you're going to look weird at first, but only to yourself and everyone who saw you when you had hair - and that will only last a couple of weeks at the most. Don't let this get you down though as it's completely normal given that you've drastically changed your appearance. Hell, if you knew Vin Diesel when he had hair and then he suddenly shaved, you'd still think it looked weird at first even though he's now universally known as one of the best looking blokes around. To everyone new you meet you'll just be another completely normal person though, which is what you need to keep in mind when walking out of the house. It really helps your confidence. People you don't know will like your look as much as you do so this confidence is very important - and if they don't, then are they really worth your time anyway? :)

Some of the pro's of noticed about being bald so far:

 - Girls will want to play with it constantly (to the point where it can even get annoying!)
 - It's pretty damn fun to play with yourself.
 - If you're going from receding/thinning hair to the shaved head, once you've gotten used to it your confidence will skyrocket.
 - With hair, you can wake up in the morning with a bad hair day. when you're bald, you'll always be able to just wake up and walk out of the house with no worry at all (very handy when on vacation as i realised this weekend).
 - For some strange reason people seem to come across as much warmer and friendly toward me when i'm out. This may be because they think i have cancer (i don't think so and sure hope not!) but i think people get the feeling that you aren't so concerned with your own physical appearance and thus might not be such a vane and judgmental person in general (a very attractive personality trait for most people).

Some con's that i've noticed so far:

 - your head is going to be much whiter than your face for alittle while. not the greatest look but just get some sun and you're sweet.
 - the first couple of times your friends and family see it, you may need to put up with some negative comments. after a week or two it becomes a non-issue though.
 - it'll take awhile for yourself to get used to the new look... but then, after 2 weeks you'll probably find yourself being highly addicted to the sly look!
 - notice i haven't mentioned girls in this section. That's because it makes no difference whether you're bald or not. if you're a good looking guy with hair, you're a good looking guy without it. i've only just now realised that for the last year my thinning hair has really effected my confidence which is probably why i've been out of the game for awhile, but 2 weeks into my slyness and this sat i've got a date with a solid 10/10 who is studying law and speaks 5 languages. Much more than i've been able to pull off with hair ;)

really hope this helps anyone out there who is has recently shaved or is considered taking on the razor!

happy to post some pics later tnite if anyone is interested.

Cheers
J

Regarding your 'con', thus the 30 day rule. It really works.

Yes, do post pictures.  Great story, very inspirational.  Just do it!

Welcome. An excellent introduction and post.

Was thinking about writing something myself about my first two months of going. No need now, because you've said everything I was going to say.  :)

There must quite a few people I've met now (new colleagues / friends of friends) who have only ever seen me bald. That makes me happier still.

Glad I've helped to make the decision easier for you. And you carry your new sly look well. Keep up the good work. It looks great.

OK, at first, your new appearance can look odd. What is odder and more interesting is (what feels like) several square miles of newly acquired smoothness across the top of your head. It's a fantastic feeling you never ever get bored of. Never. In the first few days when you are out about, there's the buzz of walking about carrying a new bald head and a strange thrilling feeling which goes with it.

Shaved my head every day for over two months and longer unexpected benefits are really starting to shine (no pun) through. Every single day, you have the same great sly look. Every day you look exactly the same. No bad hair days. And in my case, not another day of seeing yet more grey hair. And no more angling mirrors under bathroom lights seeing just a little bit less hair on the top of your head. Now I am bald, those days are all over.

And as the months go by, more and more people have never ever seen me with any hair. They only ever seen me as sly. Been at my new job for nearly six weeks. So that's several dozen people who have only ever seen this look. Which may explain why no one says anything at all. One person in the office has a beard, another has a clean shaven head. So what ? For friends and family, the new looks is no longer new. It's not even a look. It's just you being sly being you.

Yep, I've noticed more of friendly smile from people I encounter, than when I had hair before. Sometimes I, too have, thought it might be they think I'm ill. What's more likely is if you are bald, you are recognised. People remember those who are bald. Mentally, they will note you as the bald bloke.

I've looked back at pictures from recent summer holidays over the last few years. Each year, the hair line is thinner and the grey is more visible. The number times of I looked back at pictures and thought "I had more hair. I has less grey. The years are catching up". Now I am bald, I don't have to worry about any more hair loss or any more grey hair.

Go sly: you get the same great look every single day. You do get recognised more easily. (And for me), I won't be loosing any more hair and I won't be getting any more grey. For the time being, I've stopped the clock. I'll be sly in 2012. I'll by sly in 2013...

Going sly has probably been my best personal makeover.  :)
