Was going bald and accepted it, but I have a new problem now.
« on: December 30, 2011, 03:02:36 PM »
Hey, everyone.

I'm new to this forum so I'm just going to give everyone a brief, little run down about myself and my problem. Hopefully someone can help me out here.

I'm 26 years old have had a receding hairline since about 22 years old. I tried countless hair products and hair styles to either fix, or cover up my problem. This summer I finally was comfortable with myself enough to go full bald; straight razor my whole head. To my amazement it actually made me happy and took away all the stress I used to have concerning my hairline.

Here's the problem: I have very a very sensitive scalp and I keep getting some sort of oily skin scalp acne. My head looks awful, it's so broken out that it literally looks like I have a disease. There's inflammation and even whiteheads all over my head. Has anyone every dealt with this? I'm so bummed out because it's like I can't be blessed with nice hair and now I can't even be bald without some sort of problem.

I have an appointment with my doctor this week but I'm still very interested in what people have to say here because there's no better advice than other bald guys that may have went through this.

Thanks guys,
Carl.

Good move going to the doctor.  You may have seborrheic dermatitis and shaving might actually "cure" the problem.  Take a look at this article:

The doctor can probably prescribe something to help you.  It may take a while to find a regimen that works for you, so some patience on your part may be required.  You may want to consider switching to an electric razor.  It won't shave quite as close as a blade, but it will look the same and be less irritating to the skin.

I don't know if my situation was similar to yours, but after seeing the doctor(he may prescribe a gel named Clobetasol or something similar), you may want to try an aftershave that doesn't contain alcohol. It also helps if you wash your scalp after shaving (not regular shampoo) something along the lines of Nivea, Noxzema, etc. Also, as many of the other guys here can tell you, you may need to give your scalp some time, it may take a while to adjust to a drastic change (nice choice) BTW, welcome aboard!

Another thing... change your bedding often.... particularly those pillow cases that might get oily form your natural body oils.

Thanks for the information everyone.

What's really weird is that when I first got my head shaved it was fine; a few blemishes but nothing major. I started to shave my own head after that for months with a Gillette Fusion Proglide. A few months in I was stupid and used a dull blade and messed my head up. Ever since then I've been having some inflammation on my head. I went to my doctor and he gave me Mometasone Furoate Topical Solution USP 0.1% It works for the inflammation but it really dries my head out and I have a feeling it's have some adverse effects.

Up until now I've been using Selsun Blue with salicylic acid in it, but it doesn't seem to be helping much either. I'm going to use a bar of Aveeno soap until I see my doctor this wednesday.

I'd upload a picture of my head right now but I'd rather not gross everyone out. I just hope I can get this under control because I actually enjoy having my head shaved. Not only do I enjoy it shaved, but I hate my hair grown in. It would be pretty depressing if I had to keep hair the length of a one or two clip.

Again, thank you all for the responses. Especially since they were literally within hours of my post. I appreciate it a lot.

Maybe it's the blade the thingy that irritates you.
Try out with Clippers ( no guard, so #0), is not a big diffrence ( on the look), and maybe you'll be able to enjoy it.

The hair on the sides of my head (in the profile picture today), is clippered 'no guard' with basic wahl clippers.  Looks almost bald.

I cut my hair this past Thursday with Andis clippers (the type used in a barbershop) They cut real close and give the impression of smoothness although not that smooth. I got them as a gift, they're about $60 but well worth the investment. Also works well for various facial hairstyles..just a suggestion if you struggle to adapt to the razor.
