If it were the opposite
« on: December 17, 2011, 04:50:15 PM »
Just imagine for a minute that hair status was the opposite of what it is today. Let me explain: let's say that a full head of hair or hair growth  would be seen as a "defiency" (let's call it "too much testosterone"), and that baldness was the "norm". Would you then wear a hairpiece or take the means necessary to be opposite of the norm or would you stay bald like everybody thus being " mainstraim"? In fact , my question is : Are most of you doing it to get attention, making a statement  or like myself like the way i feel being bald, mainstream or not. Humour me!

Considering that I was buzzing my head back in the 80's when poofy hair was the norm -- I guess you've got your answer.

Yes, but had they have bald heads in the 80's what would you have done?

Knowing what I know now, and having had an abundance of hair, I'd still opt for the sly look.

I always liked the feel of it and when I did it originally I still had a full head of hair. Now I keep it shaved because I have gotten used to it and starting to get some silver hairs in my stubble

I do the bald thingy because:
I feel special (few guys shave their head in Romania, so I get alot of "wow's"
I like the feeling
I hate the hair look.

Well I originally shaved my head because of MPB but I would never have hair again. Sweat, shampoo, combs, wind blown look...... eh, no thanks.

Whatever the norm is, I shave my head as a relief from a scalp condition.

If I still grew hair up top on the dome I would have hair halfway down my back. In my case, since growth on top of the dome is sparse (to say the least) I would be as I have been since about '00, bald as a cue ball. What's currently "in style" would not make any difference.

Shaving your head isn't a good way to get attention anymore, if it ever was.  It's become commonplace enough that people really don't think twice about it anymore.  I don't think most of us went into it with a "do the opposite from everyone else" intent.

Yup, just another "hair" style.  Part of me likes that but another part misses the edgy aura that used to be part of it.

Would you then wear a hairpiece or take the means necessary to be opposite of the norm or would you stay bald like everybody thus being " mainstraim"? In fact , my question is : Are most of you doing it to get attention, making a statement  or like myself like the way i feel being bald, mainstream or not. Humour me!

To be honest, as a young sly guy suffering from MPB, I don't see going sly as a reaction to being mainstream. I've gone sly just over a month ago, started growing it out again, then buzzed down everything with no-guarded clippers again, and I just shaved today again (yes, a little hooray for everyone, you guys are masters at persuading everyone into going sly  :P). BUT: I'm not just sly, I feel 'bald' on the inside, too. I don't see myself as a rebel, I feel 'style-less', a blank canvas that's just looking like everyone else.

Back when I had more hair I would do everything to make it stand out: shave the sides, dye it black or red, or bleach it just to stand out. Being sly stripped me of that option. I don't feel ugly as a sly guy, but I don't feel special either (there are more guys with bald heads than guys who dye their hair red). Right now I'm looking for whatever it is that can make me stand out again in the same way as when dyeing and styling my hair. For some it is tattoos or piercings (which is only a partial solution for me since I have to be able to cover it up), for others it's in their clothing (which is probably more up my alley).

So I guess that IF we lived in a world where having hair would be seen as 'non-mainstream', I'd grow it out and proudly whip that weave back and forth. I tried to be normal once. Worst 5 minutes of my life  :D

I didn't go sly for the attention, I didn't go sly because 'I like it', but I did it because the alternative is a horseshoe waiting to happen.
