Tips for dealing with moles?
« on: January 18, 2011, 11:13:59 AM »
Hey guys, new here and new to head shaving. I'm 20 years old and have been losing my hair since I was 17. I tried Rogaine and Propecia and those may have slowed it down, but it never stopped. So, after growing my hair out pretty long, I took the plunge yesterday and had the barber take as much off as he could. The fiancee and parents are having trouble getting used to it, but they're adjusting and I flat out love it. The word that keeps coming to mind is "liberating."

The barber didn't take a blade to it, so there's still some stubble left, and I'm looking to shave it proper. The problem is, I have a small mole on the back of my head that sticks up enough so that if I take a razor over it there's no doubt that bad things are going to happen. My dermatologist looked at it when I got the Propecia prescription a year or two ago and said it's not cancerous and never will be, so at the time I didn't see any reason to get it removed. As I'm away from home at college, it will be a while before I have a chance to get it removed. In the meantime, what can I do?

I've been thinking of placing a small bandage over it and taking the razor to the rest of my head, then removing the bandage and using my electric razor around it. That seems like it invites a sloppy looking patch of stubble, though. What are your suggestions?

EDIT:

I figure I might as well show some before and after pictures, so here you are.

welcome. amazing change. Moles need to be removed by a dermatologist. Make an appt. when ready. In the meantime, you will have 2 work around it as you have.

Looks fantastic.  Good job man!

As for moles, I ended up getting four removed, from various locations all over my head prior to sly-dom (less than a month before my college graduation).  I went to a dermatologist.  He recommended linear incision removal, so I had some half-inch cuts in my head and stitches for about two weeks.  You can have the extra string cut short so you can put a bandaid over the incision if you want (stitches aren't the dissolving type b/c they have to hold your tough head skin).  Took about six weeks for the scars to turn light pink and remain flush with my skin.  Took about a year for them to lighten up completely.  As Marty said, when you're ready.

If you intend to wait, you can use the small circular bandaids (about the size of a nickel) to cover the mole and shave around it.  The electric razor thing isn't a bad idea, just be careful you don't press too hard.  Depending on how 'squishy' the mole is, you can sometimes push it through the razor guard and scrape the top.  They bleed.  A lot.

Best of luck.

I had a mole removed I guess a couple of months before shaving my head. I had it removed b/c I was leaning towards shaving but hadn't done it yet. It healed pretty quickly - I think the 2 stitches came out aftyer 7 days or so. Now there's just a pinkish area where no hair grows. The closer the shave the less visible it is. The more sloppy I get the more obvious a "hole" I have. You should make an appt to have it removed in any case - just to be safe. Perhaps just keep it at the length it is in the pic until a couple of weeks after you have it removed. Otherwise I can tell you that bumps and moles get irritated at first but ultimately become less sensitive but as noted they do definitely do bleed.

I have 2 moles on the back of my head. I found that I can take a finger and push it down and then shave over it before it can pop back up. I shave daily and this works like a charm for me. Never a nick.
