United States Navy - July 1963 to 7/July/67
Boot Camp at Great Lakes, Illinois
ET A School at Great Lakes, Illinois
ET C School at Great Lakes, Illinois
USS Saratoga (CVA60) - August 1964 to June 1967
Made three Med cruises in less than three years.
Flown back to Philly for discharge in June 1967 while on the third Med deployment
Was on Saratoga, in the Med when the Israelis attacked the USS Liberty during the 6 day war, Saratoga and USS America launched aircraft in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.
Made ETN2 before I turned 21 years old. (All you had to do to get a promotion in that rate was spell Electronics Technician the same way, 3 times in a row, and the stripe was yours.) I can tell you, a lot of 'old Boatswain Mates with hash marks and E-3 and E-4 stripes didn't have much use for snot nose 20 year old E-5 kids.
Couldn't see myself as a 'lifer', turned down an $8K signing bonus, Shore duty, and automatic First Class Petty officer stripes when I had enough time in E5 paygrade and old enough, to qualify. Wouldn't even had to take the 'spelling' test for it.
My first born son was born when the Saratoga was in Naples, Italy, on March 30, 1965.
The ship was at a flight deck inspection that day, when I found out about it. I was lucky enough to get a black and white photo of the ship, at inspection, from a friend of a friend in the OC photo department. The photo, and many others of the period can be found here:
