Hey guys! I have been sly for probably 2 years and am just learning on how to improve my shave. i am currently shaving in the shower and using the apricot scrub on my head before the shave. after, i use headslick and a mach 3 turbo. i am always getting redness/razor bumps/irritation on the bottom of my neck on the back of my head. any suggestions? its not pretty at the moment.
Are you using an astringent after you scrape the grape? Helps control the bacteria and other critters that can irritate the newly shaved skin.
Don't shave against the grain, for some people this is irritating.I can shave atg on the sides and top but not the back.
I am slowing managing to go ATG in back, just started a few days ago (been sly for a month)
First, I use an electric razor (Conair Cleanhead) on it. This alone is pretty good, but if I use a blade ATG afterwards, there is definitely something there to create drag. I want as close a shave as possible, so I started going ATG with a Sensor3.
I only do about half my head back, currently.. from my first HT scar up. I do like the closer shave.
Tips:
1) Go WTG first, or use an electric; anything to reduce the stubble so as to lessen drag. Even Across the Grain would help.
2) Mix some Secret Shave oil in with your shave gel/cream (there are threads aplenty on it) to better lube your skin. Or rub it into your scalp then apply the shave cream/gel. (BTW, I prefer HeadSlick applied with a brush)
3) Go lightly with the razor, perhaps you're bearing down a little too hard? Especially when first going ATG?
4) Make sure you rinse the razor after each pass or two. Keep gunk out from between the blades.
5) Use an astringent or similar after shaving: I use chilled witch hazel at first, after that dries, I follow it up with Tend Skin, which is made expressly for razor burn, bumps, ingrown hairs, etc... That pretty much does the trick. Good stuff. Some times I'll use a salicylic acid based skin toner again later in the day to keep my scalp clean and tight.
6) Keep your razor blades clean and sharp: When I'm done shaving, I use a can of compressed air to blow all gunk and water out from between the blades until they're clean and dry and new looking: corrosion is the number one cause of dulled blades, not the actual shaving unless your hair is extremely thick and tough.
If you're really irritated your skin, give it a rest for a day or two back there (shaving wise) and let it heal, but keep up with the w. hazel or salicylic acid or whatever.
Update: I have been using the gillette fusion for the past 3 days and the shave is just on another level. The irritation is gone and the shave is just so much smoother. How can there be such a big difference between the mach3 turbo and the fusion?
Every guy has to find the "right tool for the job" as the singer Marcia Ball says. Looks like you've found your tool.
I've had a similar prblem...I am going to try the fusion and witch hazel........

Saintc,
Marcia Ball is great. She and her music are definitely under appreciated.
my grape scrape issue was fixed with a twice a week salicylic (sp?) Acid wash scrub before a new scrape
