Winter Driving!

Hello my fellow SBG's,

                                 Well as many of you know I live in the "Great White North" and we usually get snow in the middle to late October. However this year we never got any snow untill last night, and as usual with the first snow fall every year, everyone just looses their minds and forgets how to drive. Now as an every day practice I always watch the news/weather reports to determin how early I need to get up and do what I need to (shower/shave/breakfast/dressed/shovel snow/clean the car off) you get the idea, do in order to make it to where ever I am going on time.

I can't stand those people who clear just a small bit of their windshield off so they realy have to lean forward and peer through the thin slit and drive their car/truck/van to work, and those people who fly down the wet snow covered road like its the middle of summer.

Case in point I had just that happen to me on the way to work this morning. The road that I take takes me through a marsh land and just before you get to the marsh the road is four lanes (two in each direction) I always get into the through lane well in advance so I don't have to squeeze in at the last seccond. But some moron that I see every day comes flying down the right lane barely able to see out his window, never mind being able to see the road itself with all of the snow on it, then at the last moment he cuts right in front of the car that is a head of me, causing him to slam on the breaks. I seen him coming so I had already backed well off so there would be enough room (just in case). Sure as heck though I smiled and waved at the moron when I seen him in the ditch further down the road.

Sorry just had to vent.

I saw that behavior last week driving in the Houston area, and not only automobiles.  Twice truckers, who used to always be such capable drivers, nearly drove us off the road changing lanes, even into restricted "no truck" lanes.  I don't know what's going on, in the late 90's and early 00's we drove a lot to visit our kids in college and truckers were the "gentlemen" of the highway.  This new kind of driving by truckers is dangerous.  I don't know what's going on, but I avoid the trucks now because I can't determine what their next move is.

In the great state of Pa. where I live snow hardly causes a stir...... oh but in Maryland, the INSANITY!!! If the weather forecasters even mention the word snow...... I defy you to find a single gallon of milk or a pack of toilet paper on any store shelf.

Good to know in advance of a possible move to Baltimore next year. It's just a possibility not a probability. :)

I think the same thing, Tom. Out here in California, people go nuts with a big storm. "StormWatch 2009" (or whatever the year is) is the usual TV news headline. It's like we all need to start building arks. It's crazy. Then again, more cars on the road are driven by people that don't alter their driving habits when the pavement is wet. Usually a recipe for disaster.

In the past few years a couple (US) states have put laws on the books about this. Supposedly you can get ticketed for it, just like in some places you can get ticketed for not having your lights on when the wipers are on.

I'll totally back up Mikekoz13 on this. I've lived in a number of places, including DC and the Maryland suburbs for a few years. Never before or since have I seen the crazy panic buying as I did there before snow. Whole aisles of the store wiped out. Not just milk and toilet paper -- canned goods, jugs of mayonnaise, no deli meats or cheese, nothing left in the freezer cases, etc.

We just had 6" of snow here... you'd think it was 10' the way people responded.  Several 4WDs poking along at 10mph.  SHEESH!  Some of them should have really stayed OFF the road!  :Xo!

I'm frightened by all the idiots with monster trucks who assume the ownership of a vehicle of that size and weight mean they can drive in snow and ice.

Oooooooh nooooo.  This happens in PA all the time too.  Every time a snowflake is forecast everyone in the county would run out to by the ingredients for French Toast.  Except for a handful of times this is how it always played out:

Weatherman 5 days prior: "A big storm is coming our way!"
Weatherman 3 days prior: "The storm of the century is heading our way!"
Weatherman 12 hours prior: "Hug your children tight for this is the last time you might see them alive."

Snowstorm hits.  The aftermath is a dusting of snow on the grass.  The weatherman doesn't even acknowledge how much he overreacted.

I still remember the "Storm of the century"of early 2000.  These two storms were supposed to combine and hit Philadelphia with a storm of an intensity never seen on earth.  The airport was closed.  My employer let us out early so we could get home before the roads became a deathtrap and what happens?  The sun came out before I even reached home.  Yes, the FREAKING SUN CAME OUT.  With all their Dopplers and satellites how is it they are about as accurate as a Ouigi board?



Maybe I should be named Hank Hill because I never seem to get caught up in these mindless stampedes.

Love a snow before Christmas  - -here in the North East we have it until March    -We just missed the big New York City storm - - -we did not get a   flake of snow and are only 100 miles northof NYC

I am up in the "Great White North" too in Calgary Alberta and we get dumps of snow at a time and VERY cold artic fronts. Anyway, I noticed a huge difference with good winter tires. You sure can tell who doesn't use them after a big snowfall when you see people sliding through intersections with summer tires on! You figure we'd be ready for it and have the snow tires on in October or November at the latest. Sure improves stopping distances and grip!

In Tennessee it's the same way the word snow sends people to the store and instantly all of the milk, bread, and eggs are gone. Plus the fact people think they can drive 60 on the snow and don't get me started on the ice storms.
