I hate this time of year

Guys, this time of year sucks for me and shaving. No sun and no tan really affects the way I shave, I have dry skin and am more prone to irratation ( red blotches ) on the dome as well the neck. Any advice or countermeasures anyone use to prevent this.....and does using a shaving brush/bowl help during the winter months ( if anyone has noticed ).

Try the shaving brush, shaving soap and bowl. In the shower. Works wonders for me.

Couple of things, good after shave balm, Nivea Extreme is great.  And, look in the skin lotion/ointment section and there is a skin lotion, Curel, unscented.  They use it in hospitals.  A small amount rubbed into a freshly washed dome before bed--it dries quickly, will help preserve moisture for 24  hours.  Also, don't wash the dome w/ body soap--too drying, get a mild antibacterial, like Cuticura [I should get paid for all my recs on that stuff] or any soap in the skin care area that says "mild and undrying" or words to that effect.

+1 on the Nivea Extreme After Shave Balm...... good stuff and remember, as with any good quality product, a little gfoes a long way.

If you aren't using a brush you are missing an important and great feeling part of the shave routine. The brush is a natural exfoliator AND it feels great. It also "holds" the lather so you will not need to add any more of your shave product before lathering up for your against the grain pass.
Don't spend a lot of money on that brush....I've seen them for over a hundred dollars...... but I opted for the $4 brush at Wally World and it works just great.

What Koz says on the brush too--mine's the "economy" model from our local non-franchise pharmacy.  Roughly same price--but not withstanding the price feels like $1,000,000 every morning.

You could also try Bald Guyz Moisture Gel... I use it after I shave or shower and don't have any issues with dry skin in the winter.

I have suffered from extremely dry skin my entire life, so I can really relate to your problem ShadowSide. I DO HAVE a secret weapon however, that I'd like to share with you.

Its called  AVEDA INTENSIVE HYDRATING MASQUE. It's an oil-free, fragrance-free, clear product made from flower and plant extracts. I apply it after shower and shave, and before I go out in the elements. The directions call for washing it off a few minutes after application. Depending on how my skin is feeling and how intense the weather is outside, I sometimes leave it on, and just wipe off any remaining sheen with a moist cloth. Its fantastic. The downside is the fact that I've only been able to find it at AVEDA stores, which are few and far between, although I'm sure you can order it online. Check it out.

I dont have issues with a dry scalp, not sure if I just naturally dont have it or what. When I shower though I use shampoo and conditioner just like I did when I had hair, I think it helps some.

I have the same problem - my skin gets rough, dry and brown on my knuckles and I get really bad dandruff from November to February. MY hairs grown out right now, since September, and I am considering buzzing, or shaving my head again just to get rid of the dandruff that accompanies the winter. I had decided to grow it out again because the last time I shaved my head my skin got really irritated... I can't find a good combination where I can shave my head on a regular basis. It's fine for like 4-5 days, but then the skin gets increasingly irritated until the point where I can't do it anymore. Sucks.

I prefer the sly look and feeling, but it's been tough trying to find a good combination.

I discovered by accident several years ago, after getting a REALLY bad facial sunburn on a ski trip, that Noxema did wonders for healing my skin, clearing up my acne, and generally keeping my face moisturized. Now that I'm shaving my head, I find it works great there, too.

I'm talking the old-fashioned tub-type container. I use the cheap Walmart brand, once in the morning after shaving, and once before going to bed.

It might be worth a try...

I tend to get almost scaly skin in the winters esp on my upper arms and legs. Last winter i started using baby oil and it worked wonders. I put it on after i showered and then just towel off. Might help you.

Yep, times are tough for head shavers during the winter, which is why I stack up on moisturizer.

Hi. I have dry Skin too, i use Thayers Medicated Witch Hazel or Aloe Vera Gel after every Shave. It works  :)
