Critics are already panning the movie as almost cartoonish.

Looks like the movie might be worth seeing just for the hilarious effects. I saw them destroy LA and DC. Don't they usually like to destroy Paris in movies like that?

2012 or not, the earth only has a couple billion years left before the sun turns into a red giant and consumes it. I guess sooner or later its going to happen

You'll know when it happens... you'll wake up dead!

I know one thing for certain though, if someone sets a date, it's wrong!

Mike this is a subject that has interested me so here are my own "opinions" on this subject.
Being from a traditional Christian background I have heard for years about "the end", "the rapture", Armageddon and so forth. It was not until later in life that I ever heard about the alleged impending 2012 event. It is interesting to note that many traditions around the world point to what would be more appropriately called a "change", not necessarily an "end" as in a finality with no further existence. I think one of the best teachers I have heard on this subject is Greg Braden. If interested you can google his website.
I think sooner or later changes will come to the planet. Some will perceive them to be devastating and frankly it would be arrogant of us as humans to think world wide disasters could not happen. We have already seen them happen on small scales just in the last decade and I think they could happen more broadly.
The thing is people get so wrapped up in worrying about things like this, they stop living their lives in a positive way. If it's going to happen..it's going to happen so why worry about it. I think it's far more important for us as individuals and collectively to live in the "now", be kind to each other and do the best we can each day. Some schools of thought say Dec. 21, 2012 will not be the large scale disasters people think it will be but the beginning of a large scale evolvement in human consciousness. I think that would be great. Whatever happens will take place but I am still planning on getting up on Dec. 22 of that year and having my omelette and coffee.

I say we meet half way between Gettysburg and Myrtle Beach on December 21st 2012 and have that omelet and coffee together. We can raise our cups to the continuance of life!!!

On one of my home videos from college one girl was telling us about the "end of the world" date that was supposed to happen at some point in the near future: a year that was 199-something. It didn't happen. Y2K was predicted to be the end of the world by everyone except the writers of certain episode of Star Trek Voyager and nothing happened.
But who knows? Maybe the old calendar and prophecy makers of yore created all these false end-of-times days so that when the real one rolled around we'd be surprised!

I personally don't go in for supernatural or superstitious stuff of ANY kind. And that extends to claims of gifts of "prophecy". The fact is that people in a number of cultures for hundreds of years have made apocalyptic claims set at various dates and under widely varying circumstances. REPENT! THE END IS NIGH! and all that.
Remember back when the "Heavens Gate" idiots did a mass suicide because they believed in a doomsday prophecy that said the world was going to end? When they were found people ALL over the world said "What a bunch of morons" and "Man those folks are KOOKS!" So why are we, otherwise educated, intelligent, enlightened, 21st Century global citizens paying THIS dooms day prophecy ANY attention at all? Why not learn from all the OTHER times some weirdos got it wrong and just dismiss it and move on? This whole thing has been frustrating me for months now. I just don't get it.
This whole 2012 hoopla extends well beyond this one movie. There are many MANY books, documentaries, websites and TV shows (damn you Discovery & History Channel, you're better than this!) dedicated to the subject. The approaches range from the religious to the pseudo-scientific to the just plain wacko-loony! it's all just so.... silly. If we aren't careful it's going to wind up being ANOTHER freakin' Y2K!! And don't we all STILL feel a little silly and saddened as a species about that one?
No person or culture has ever, to any degree gotten these "prophecies" even close to right. Imagine what would happen if we, as a now global species put all that energy we currently waste on foretelling the "end of days" and "the end of the world as we know it" (thank you R.E.M.) and instead focused that time and energy on LIVING rather than fearing "THE END"??
Imagine the people who could be fed, by the food we horde. How many homes could be built with the supplies we use to build bunkers and shelters in case of the apocalypse. Imagine how much richer our lives could be made by simply focusing our love and attention on our families and friends instead of fearing the possible end of the world. Just sayin'.
