NEW HEAD SHAVER
« on: September 06, 2009, 08:05:16 AM »
Hi guys,

I am new to head shaving (only two weeks).  I have always done a buzz cut, but never this close.
and  frankly I AM LOVING IT. ;D

I have a couple of question for you vets out there!

1) as a newbie should I use a MACH 3 or DE razor (apparently u can get close nice shave)?

2) what is the best GEL/CREAM/Oil you guys recommend?

3) Any other tips/tricks for a budding sly bald guy?

Greetings from Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Bonjour and welcome to the world of Sly.  You'll find a lot of discussions on here about all the different razors, creams, and other topics about headcare.  The number one tip any of us can give you is to find your own routine.  No 2 heads are the same, so what works for me might not work for you.  It's all about trial and error, hopefully with a minimal amount of the error.

Flick, welcome!  I'd use try out different razors until you find one that you're comfortable with and gives you a great shave.

Hi Flick,

Welsome to SBG.  Head over to the "Head Shaving" forum and check out some of the threads.  There is enough information there to empty your bank account and give you some techniques to try for weeks!

Welcome to the forum, Flick.

To try to answer your questions I have to go along with everyone who said to keep on reading. However, since you asked:

1) I use either the HeadBlade with Sensor touchups around the ears or a Panasonic wet-dry if I'm in a hurry. I tried a pretty expensive DE "safety" razor a while back. I felt much better after the transfusion.

2) For a long time I used Shave Secret Shaving Oil with HeadSlick on top of it. It worked great but I had read numerous posts about King Of Shaves Shaving Gel in the forum. A couple of weeks ago I found KOS on sale at my local Walgreen's and bought them out. Using the KOS on top of the Shave Secret gave me (my opinion, of course) the absolute greatest shave I ever had since I started walking down Sly Street. (Yes, I made that up but all my sly bros can feel free to use it).

3) Exfoliate your skull after shaving. I use a generic brand (Equate) from WalMart that has the same basic stuff as the St. Ives Apricot Scrub at half the price. It helps smooth my scalp after shaving.
An after shave made for the dome is nice, as well. There are several that are available commercially. I make my own using Witch Hazel (astringent) with enough Aloe Vera gel to thicken it just a little and just enough Tea Tree Oil (the real stuff, not just the scent) so I can smell it when it's on my hands but not so much that I (or anyone else) can smell it when it dries on my head.

Good luck with all this and I have to agree with dawgfan when he said there is enough info here to empty out your bank account.
