Hey Paulie, make sure you ease back into it. If it's been a long time since you've done any gym work, the last thing you should do is start out with an intense workout and end up sore as can be the next day.
Good luck.

You'll do fine, just set a schedule and stick w/ it. If you slip, don't beat yourself up, and restart right away.
Don't forget the aerobic exercises, 20 minutes about 4 to 5 times a week--no use to have big guns if you can't get them anywhere without losing your breath!

You're going to enjoy it and look great.

I've got a membership at one of those 24/7 chains. Too bad the membership card doesn't weigh 50 lbs....carrying that around is the only exercise I've gotten since February.

That's a good strategy, because once you've paid for a trainer, you'll be sure to actually go and get your money's worth. He'll also push you harder than you'd push yourself -- and teach you the right way to do things, so you 'll get faster results and avoid injury.
Good luck.

Working out with a buddy will keep you going afterwards

I disagree on method here. My favorite thing to do when I've been out of the loop for awhile is hit it hard (as long as I don't drop the bar or use improper form). I will be very sore the next few days, to me it's just my body's way of saying thanks for a job well done, and a reminder to keep at it.
After that first week the pain subsides, and you are in the zone Paulie!

I got back in the weight room last week and started running again this past weekend. The old body is sore but it feels so good - my body's way of saying thanks.

Different strokes for different folks. I guess I side with most trainers that say you should ease back into an exercise routine to avoid injury and discouragement/soreness after a long layoff.
