job interviews with the dome
« on: June 30, 2008, 11:57:25 PM »
Serious question (with some lighthearted bantar)

I was recently laid off, which probably contributed to my 'britney moment', which in turn lead me to the way of the sly.

My question is this.  Do any of you think people will judge me negatively for having a smooth dome?  Should I grow my hair back a bit for interviews?  Should I get rid of my goatee, or as my sister calls it, my "prison Pu**y"?

I know most of us would like to think that negative judgements will not happen, but I honestly want to know if they do.

 Thanks  O0

I really think most people these days will judge you by your attitude and confidence...

but there are exceptions..always..but then again someone could hold it against you that you had your haircut a certain way and they didn't like it...

You never know, so why not look great (which you do) and have a great attitude when you walk into the interview..

nothing screams a well manicured dude like a slick, freshly shaved head...

now the goat is another thing...just kiddin' but going "Mr Clean" is like the "boy next door thing"//can't go wrong with that!

Stay smooth bro...it'll help you GET the job I think!

Last August I was thinking seriously of transferring to another group on the campus where I work. Some engineers from this new group wanted me in their group badly. So I was approached and asked to interview with them (on the SLY because they didn't want my current group to know). So I went to be interviewed by the big shots from that group. When i walked into the interview there were three guys in shirts and ties there. One of them blurts out "Wow! They burned the hair right off of you!!". I never missed a beat..... I just chuckled and responded very enthusiastically, "Yeah it looks great doesn't it??!!". Everybody had a good laugh and we moved on with the interview. They offered me the job about 30 minutes later.

Moral of the story...... it doesn't matter. If your skill set matches their needs they will hire you. If they don't hire you because of your hair(less) look, you don't want to work for them anyway.

great post mike. when i got laid off in jan, i never even considered growing hair for an interview it is just who i am, SLY. attitude and being able to do the job are what is important. hair should have nothing to do with it. hold that sly head up high and show them that you are the best man for the job.

Never even thought about it, in fact the first discussions about moving from my old place in government service to consulting occured w/in 2 months of applying the blade to my scalp.  I remember the guy who I will now report to in the new company said when I walked in to the restaurant, "I never realized you were taller than I am!"  Maybe, (1) the Sly look made me confident enough to decide to leave the "security" of government employment, (2) caused me to walk "taller" and (3) made a really positive impression--i.e., he saw me as taller which can mean better than before.  There is at least one other Sly guy in senior management, and one with a serious buzz cut--all bright agressive guys for the company's clients.
Sly is okay, but it has to be packaged just like any other interview, neat, clean and attractive.  I didn't wear a tank top to the restaurant, and I didn't get tanked on drinks either.  Packaging, not the Sly look, makes the impression.

Saintc said it well.  It is the total person they are interviewing, not just a bald head.  It should not matter one way or the other if everything else is in place (confidence, personality and good manners).

Good luck.

I don't think you'll have any issues with interviews since you're sly now.  You typically get an interview based on your resume, education &/or work experience.  There's so many sly guys nowadays that it really shouldn't be an issue.  Just let your positive confidence shine through and sell your talents and successes and you'll be fine!

nicalosrage:  i'd say keep the chrome dome & the goat.  it's 2008 & i know it's an acceptable look.   i work as a RN at a local hospital & we have a handful of sly guys including RNs, docs, physical therapists, occup. therapists, xray techs, etc.  nothing looks more professional than clean white uniform with a stethoscope sporting the chrome dome... heck... most people think i'm a doctor.  however... i quickly let em know that i'm a RN. O0

anyways... keep us posted & let us know whether U keep the chrome dome or grow it out.   again.... i don't think you'll have a prob wearing it smoooooth. O0

Thanks for all the responses guys.   O0

I know that, unfortunately, some looks are frowned upon, but from your answers, I see this is not one of them anymore.
