Title: New guy #23567
Post by: Kajun on February 21, 2007, 07:26:19 PM
long time lurker on the site..finally decided to register since i'm contemplating doing the deed... i just haven't found the cajones yet to do it! i'm 38 and been slick on top since i was 26 and over the last few years i noticed that even the SIDES of my head was losing hair  :-\ ...can't a bald guy atleast have some side action going on? lol it looks pretty bad to say the least... one of the things holding me back is i'm in the navy(yup another navy guy!) and we can't have any facial hair except for cookie cutter mustaches that can't extend pass the corner of your mouth....and of course the usual host of insecurities and reasons that men have about shaving the dome, which i have alot of.

yesterday i went and got a haircut at the exchange..i sit down and tell the guy "navy regulation cut..not too short"...same thing i say everytime i go...this guy proceeds to shear me like a sheep! rofl...when he was done i was like damn dude i said "NOT too short" lol he said.. "well i used a #2" ..... thanks buddy!:x!

today i've been surveying people at work and except for 2 people the rest have said ..nah don't shave it :( i was all hyped up about shaving last night and then i got my bubble burst lol so i decided to post to discuss it with people that know the dilemma i'm in(i know..i know..just shave it!) ....anyways...great site and look forward to participating in the forum. O0

Shave it, if you don't like it, grow it back.  Simple.

Welcome to the group, Kajun!  Shave it.  Even the navy would have to admire that level of slyness. ;)

First and foremost, please let me say thank you for doing a great service.  O0 Seccond, Welcome to the group, there a lot of great people here, to offer advice. As for me I'm not bald buy nature, I'm bald by choice. But I still think that you should shave it off, my dad for years had a similar head of hair as you described, and I always told him to just shave it off, after several years of me nagging him, he finnaly did the deed and he said he wished he had done it a long time ago. I also think that it made him feel more confident. But as for you , you gotta do it because it's what you want to do, I think that some of your freinds may just not want to hurt you feelings.
Any way that's my two cents, I hope it helps.

Hey there New Guy #23567! I'm in the Air Force, although I'm only 22 :-D

I HATE the military mustaches... mostly because the first time I noticed them was at MEPS. Every liason there - no lie - had a regulation, cop-looking mustache. I swore to never wear one.

A lot of people (outside of the military, of course) opt for the goatee/soulpatch look, but I don't really like having facial hair, other than going about 2 days without shaving. Facial hair is too much maintenance, and one of the things I've come to love about having a shaved head is that it is also low-maintenance. I never have to worry about being in regs...

I had reservations about shaving it slick, so I gradually went down in length. I used to wear a #6 on the sides and a #8 on top. One day I took it down to a #2 all over, and it grew on me (pun intended). So then I tried a #1, and then just a straight buzz. It got my co-workers adjusted to it as well. Shaving it slick was just the next step, and I have no regrets (well, other than trying a Mach3 razor - stick with the HeadBlade!)

For a while there was a rule against having a completely shaven head in the Air Force... but so many people were doing it after a while that it was one of those few rules that wasn't enforced strictly. Now it's allowed, and it's almost a staple military "cut"!

I dig it. I have no regrets, and suggest you give it a try! I used to worry about having people standing over me if I was working on some equipment, or bending down in front of a girl at a cash register if I dropped my keys or something, just because I was afraid of someone seeing my thinning hair. Now it's all out in the open: no more looking over my shoulder.

Welcome there Kajun this is definitely the place to get your questions answered and any support you seek.   Spent many years with you guys as I'm retired from the Corps and I never met a sailor who wasn't up for a challenge.   Like Canadian, I am bald by choice.  I shave because that is what I feel comfortable with.  If you step up to the challenge and shave it you will not only feel a new level of confidence but you will show yourself as a man who stands out.  Go for it man, you won't regret it.

Hey Kajun, and welcome!

Ditch the Navy regulation 'stache (can't believe I used to have one) and shave the dome Sailor! #a^3

When you shave your head, don't worry about what anyone else thinks of it... you shave your head for yourself.

Man, it's just hair. If you shave and you don't like it, grow it back! I would advise to at least shave it everyday for a week. Give yourself time to get used to it. Then you'll know if you really like it or not.

Welcome to SBG, by the way!!

Welcome to the SBG's Kajun  :)

You look good with a goatee (which is actually called a "Van Dyke" but that's a totally different thread!)

Welcome aboard Kajun! Test drive the slick look for at least 30 days. Give your brain and those around you a chance to get used to the look. Dedicate to a 30 day trial run, shaving regularly and see if you don't love it after a month. If you don't love it, it's hair... it WILL grow back. It's easy to grow back a military amount of hair in a short time.

But I'm betting you'll dig the slick and stay sly!

O0 Welcome, Kajun. You've found the right place. I agree with the other guys, especially Socctty: away with it. After looking at your pics, the slick dome will definitely be an improvement, as you already know. It's a matter of summoning some courage. M-Babe is also right in favoring the goatee, when/if that is possible while you're still in the service. Embrace your baldness, own it, and everyone else will respond to your new confidence. There is no dishonesty or denial in shaving, and it takes only ten minutes more in your usual routine. Good to have you on board; send an after pic. Professor Melon

You look like a Chief I once served with.  All you need is the regulation coffee cup.

I've had better luck finding headblade products at Walgreens or Ekards.  But I usually just mail order from the site, same price, have had all my deliveries within a couple or three days.

Kajun,

Dude, you definately have the head shape to shave your head.  For years, I was trying to convince my buddy Ted, who also had very little hair, to shave.  A little over a year ago, he finally did and has not regretted it.  He said it's the best thing he ever did in terms of his appearance.  For those of us who are losing hair, I believe that it is something that should be tried once.  If you don't like it, it will be a crew cut in a very short time!

Kajun,
Welcome to the crew.

The Headblade products are available at Walgreens and Walmart but ordering from the site is pretty quick.

The products I use the most are:
>Headblade Signature Series (I think discontinued but the Headblade Sport is the lower priced alternative...the wheels help it track better on your head)

>The Headslick (the shaving lotion...its thinner than regular shave cream but works well on your head and your face.

>The Headlube (both the Matte and Glossy lotion are good moisturizers...you know you got to moisturize your situation, boyz!)

>HeadClear (for a bump free domain!....The chicks (or in my case my wife) don't dig the bumps!)

>HeadShed (probably my favorite product of the family....exfoliate scrub ..totally rocks).

Keep on being Sly!!!!!!!!!

EDIT> disclaimer: I do not work for Headblade and this is not an advertisement.  I just believe in the products and what Todd, Max, and that whole gang are trying to create!

Kajun, don't forget to use the MYSPACE20 code when you order from HeadBlade.com to get 20% off your order, which can end up saving you what it would cost to ship.

Dudes...I host a party every year here in North Carolina on a Friday night in August in our downtown area during a bicycle race called Party In the Alley.  We literally convert the alley behind one of my buildings into a full on blow it out party with a band and the whole bit.  This year, one of my Nawlin friends who lives here now through down a killer cajun shrimp boil! 450 lbs of shrimp along with gosh knows how much corn and potatoes....It rocked!!!!!!!!!

We have even shipped crawfish up from there for the feast before!!  Totally off the hook!

Hammer...a good shrimp boil is almost as good as a crawfish boil in my book!...i'd fight ya for a seat at either table lol i'm in norfolk,Va. and the only thing you can get cheap to boil is crabs...so i been doing crab boils for the last  4 yrs since i been here...there is a cajun festival every june here and some guy from Lafayette,La. brings a ton of live ones up and boils them to sell, $25 for 5lbs..ouch.....i missed this summers fest though due to deployment.....but i'm being transfered back to panama city beach,Fl. at the end of may...and they have live crawfish available in town during the season and plus i'm only a short ride away from the motherland....so i'm one happy coonass    O0 .....damn just typing about them is making my mouth water  ;D

anyway...tonight is the NIGHT!!! i can't wait til next week to get my headblade...i'm stoked to do it tonight..so tonight it is!! plus i'll have a couple days to get used to it and accept it before facing everyone at work......i just went and bought a fusion..i got the aveeno therapy shaving cream like professor melon suggested and going pick up a set of clippers at my buddy's house after work..then going home and going SLY!! only thing that sucks is i'm on call today and rest of weekend and i can't get drunk to do it lol..would much rather be drunk incase i really dont like it..then i can tell people .."hey i was drunk"  :XX

since i won't have my headblade stuff tonight...what can i buy to put on my head after the shave? need something that is not oily.

Get-r-done!

Try lubriderm.  I don't think it's that oily.
