hello fellow chrome domes: i always enjoy discussing the topic of "charcoal or propane" since i luv 2 grill. well... this is the official 2009 version of the charcoal & propane debate. i'll start: although it gets very messy... i prefer charcoal when grilling the taste is just "priceless". O0
so... how ''bout U? charcoal or propane... what's your story?

Although I prefer charcoal, I use propane because it's quick.
-
Charcoal is nice now and then, but propane for convenience.
-
Charcoal - when I have plenty of time
Electric - in a hurry
-
Charcoal. Only. Nothing can beat it.
Hank Hill would hate me. :px

Charcoal always.
Grilling is like shaving my head. It is a process that can not be rushed.

Slick, that was beautiful. Like a haiku or something.
"Grilling is shaving
You can not rush perfection
Too much red is bad" :*))
-
I voted Propane only because I use it for convenience. I prefer charcoal with wood chips.
-
I'm a propane BBQ guy, Weber & Holland grills. I use the electric Bradley smoker when I want that great tasting slow smoked flavor. )-m

Thanks man! Never considered myself a poet. ;D

You can use wood chips with propane too, just soak them and wrap them in aluminum foil and stuff under the grill. I like using applewood soaked in nothing other than apple juice O0
-
Charcoal all the way!! Propane is easier but there is nothing like the taste of food that has been grilled on charcoal. MMMmmmmm!!
-
Guys,
Check out the Big Green Egg. It is all that I have used for several years. I guarantee that if you use one, you will not go back to propane. Not only does the BGE do a great job cooking your food (and keeping it juicier than you can imagine), but it is a hell of a lot of fun to use.

Charcoal all the way. Propane is for pansies.
-
I guess i'm a pansie then!
-
I guess i'm a pansie then!
Me, too.
-
yeah hank hill says, "taste the meat, not the heat!" but i prefer that nice flavor charcoal gives my fat steaks!
hank is the man, but i have to disagree with him on this one! that nice charcoal smell cookin my steaks on the grill, beer in one hand and tongs in the other! nothing beats it.
-
Half a pansy here. I use both.
P.S. I've had my eye on a Big Green Egg for some time. Someday...
-
Propane only here... hate the taste charcoal gives food.
-
I have been using propane for years mainly for the convenience. But when I was growing up and learning how to grill it was always charcoal. Cooked on charcoal for the first time in a long time at my cousins house on Memorial Day.
-
I'm proud to propane! Why? It's many times easier to time the done-ness of the meat than it is with charcoal. If you do it right, you're in total control.
-
Charcoal, hands down. YOu will see why this summer at Paulies.

Charcoal...
Most people that learn to grill using charcoal end up sticking with it. There is a small learning curve, but nothing beats the added flavor ;D
-
Charcoal and chips, where appropriate. Sometimes I spend the extra and get "natural" charcoal--wood blocks that have been made into chunks of charcoal--it's a different effect, extremely hot, but not long lasting fire. I like smoking, putting a fire on one side of the grill, covering w/ moist chips and smoking with the food on the other side with the cover down. This is especially good w/ whole chickens, and pork shoulder. We also have a natural gas grill in the kitchen that is extremely handy for griling and avoiding the fat from fried/sauteed foods.

I guess this shows my age but when I started grilling there was no such thing as propane grills. But I use one today.
-
I use a Weber Kettle BBQ and really enjoy getting it going.. I like to do roasts of beef, pork and lamb on it..
Go easy on the starter fuel.. or you will have found yet another alternative to the Mach III or Fuzion ;D!
-
I use neither. I set up my grill to run on natural gas from the house supply. No worries about tanks to refill.
Now I need to run a gas line under the deck at our new house for the grill. We're having a father's day cookout this weekend.

We use a starter chimney, two sheets of newspaper, no petroleum aftertaste at all, a little kinder on the environment too, but I'm not ever giving up my grill because of its carbon footprint, :x! :x! :x!, BELIEVE ME.
-
Charcoal gets my vote. I've used the same weber for over 11 years. But, I too use propane for convenience :-[ The only other thing that I am interested in is the primo grill/smoker. I've wanted one since I first saw them last october at the jack daniels annual bbq. O0

If I liked my dad I'd have a cookout too, but use charcoal.

Saint, before too long we'll be purchasing "carbon credits" just to grill a slab of meat >:(
-
Timmj- I can't make Florida or LA- I'm stuck here on Maui until a quick CA trip to CA in July for 50th HS reunion, see new grand daughter and meet w/ Tyler in SJ. I grille )-m )-m on coals when possible and do lotsa chicken---would you share your secret sauce with the guys?
If not, I understand.
-
lol you asking Timm to share the secret sauce is almost as nasty sounding as him talking about it :P
-
Dudes, its not like that at all. I know that by saying "secret special sauce" can be taken many different ways...but it is not liek that ..Its good
Timmay

I use propane. I'm too impatient for charcoal. Plus it's messy.
-
but sometimes Stogie....you can not compare the great taste of charcoal to propane. Yes It is easier...but good thnigs come to those who wait.
