Title: Is it too late for me?
Post by: Slickdome on February 18, 2007, 08:13:50 PM
Howdy folks.

I've always been hopelessly straight-laced and conservative...when it comes to my appearance.  But now that I've been a Sly Guy for a few years, I'm a lot less uptight about such things.  The thing is....I regret that I've never tried any piercings or tats.

I've been thinking about getting an earring (or two), but I always talk myself out of it, because I feel like I'm way too old to start that stuff.  Whaddya think?  Is it too late?     Btw, I'm 42, and ripe for a good ol' mid-life crisis...lol.

Slickdome,  I did your bit in reverse.  Have the earrings and tat on right bicep but thought the Sly Guy BBC thing was too big a deviation.    Don't think its a mid life crisis either, I know mine isn't, just mature enough, (and I got a few years on you) to do what it is that makes you happy and unless its suppportive, others opinions aren't that important.  Just MY views, man.  Go for it!

Slickdome, I'm 42, have had one ear ring since leaving the Navy, I was 28.  Your not too old, and you don't look 42, go for it.  Start with one in the left ear, see how you like it.  I can remove mine and no one knows I have a pierced ear.  It all depends on the ear ring.  I tend to go with the silver stud, and sometimes a small hoop.  Nothing too flashy or big.

I didn't get my ear pierced until I was 33...

Do what floats your own boat.  You are who you are, so might as well become who/what you want to be.  I can't give advice about the piercings (don't have any), but if you get ink make sure it is something you have thought about, and I liked starting in less noticeable spots and working out.  Watch out for ink, too it can get addictive. :-\

Hell yeah man, go for it! I always think it's cool as hell when middle aged people are into tats and peircings. Just shows that your only as old as you feel! If you do get your ear done, I'd say go for both of them. Only one ear is old school. I have both of mine done and stretched to a 00... and I have 7 tats. Even when I'm 60 I'm pretty sure that I'll still be getting inked!

Piercings, absolutely. If you don't like it simply take it out and let it heal (aside from ear plugs which I have no knowledge of). I've have around 15 piercings and currently only hold 3. My eyebrow, my lip, and my right nipple (my left nipple got ripped out during a freak accident involving the ball coming out, a loosely threaded blanket, and a late night phone call).   But I have no scars to show from any piercing that was either rejected or taken out.

As for tats, I only have two. My left forearm holds a large treble clef which is very meaningful to me (got it on my 18th birthday), and a pair of "stripper lips" on my lower thigh (I was drunk and heard the tattoo needle calling my name...it is truly addictive).

Either way, just make sure it's what YOU want. A work of art on your own skin can truly be priceless if it's what you feel inside you.

You are never too old. It is never too late. Starting something new means just that, "starting". It's your life, there are no rules. If it makes you happy, nd it doens;t hurt anybody else, GO FOR IT!

You need no more justification than "because I like it".

Just my 2 cents, I'd like some change.

Thanks for all of the comments, guys.  I'm still on the fence, so I guess I'll be remaining unpunctured and undecorated for now.    My girlfriend will be happy; she gets terrified when I mention getting pierced or inked.  Last summer, I got a little fake hoop earring and wore it for awhile.  She was not amused...lol.   On the other hand, my brother-in-law is a big Harley dude with tons of ink; he's ready to set me up with his lifelong tattoo artist..."Snake"...in a heartbeat.   If I do get the tat, I've already decided it's going to be a shark...on the left delt.

I did all those things while I was younger like 23.. now at 37..thinking of getting a tatoo in the back of my neck, and getting a cool earing. The hole is there just need to reopen it.. hehehehhe

Just to prove we have a diverse group here... ARE YOU NUTS?  Earings are for girls!   :*))

I guess that would be a "no" vote!   ::)

...but consider the source, I'm "old school".   O:O

I have one tat on my right arm just below teh shoulder. It is a coiled cobra and says SVT undernieth it with flames coming off the lettering. It was my dream car and I have it and it's paid for. I won't ever sell it. thats why I got the tat also a good friend drew it up for me made to order so to speak LOL so that adds to it. I will probably get another tat when I leave the navy and yes it will be a Navy tat of some variaty and yess it will be another custom job. The Navy has been a big part of my life for the last eight years so I will imortalize that time with more ink.

All that being said as long as you are doing it for you and no one else go for it. Don't do it if you just want to fit in with another crowd or any crap like that.

G/L with your decision and if you get some ink done post a pic for us.

Well, I guess It partly depends on your career, If you make good $$$ and don't wanna F it up. get something that is easily concealed(chest or back tat, nipple ring/s) I've had my main 2 piercing long enough that I can remove them for weeks at a time for work and they don't close. I won't take a job that has a problem with ink.....As far as the nervousness, Start with a piercing. You can at least take it out if you don't like. Me, I'm gonna be the freakiest bastard in the nursing home. Age shouldn't be a factor!!!

I guess I am still old school.  I got my first piercing and only piercing in my left ear when i was 17..that was 20 years ago.  I still everyonce ina while wear one but not too often.  Alot of people dont even realize I even have it peirced.  Everyone says its the cool thing to get both done..but why do the right ear when i rarely wear the left one....so I guess I will keep it the same.

I got my first piercing, my ear, when I was about 25. When I was about 35, I got my tongue pierced. I was 47 when I got my first tat, and I'm planning more.

I don't think it's ever too late to do what you really want. But IMHO, there's plenty of time to regret not doing what you always wanted to do.

Go for it.

Well I am 31 and I am going down to book in for my first TAT next weekend. Gonna get a Redback (blackwidow) Spider on my forearm.

I am getting it there because I don't see the point on getting it where i cannot see it.
I wan't it to have 3d shading so it looks kinda real. I am a fan of realistic animal tats.

Being on my forearm means I can see it when I wear tee shirts, but can still cover it if I needed to go to an interview or something.

So no I don't think your ever to old to do things like that. Whatever makes you feel good.

Glen , disreagard other post, (tattooing the head) and good luck with the tat! Sounds cool, and a good spot to get it. As you said, you can cover it up if need be.
I also think you'll be back for more, lol.

I got my first tattoo last Summer just after I turnedd 47. I wanted one for years but never got one because I wanted it to be about something significant in my life. Nothing really struck me as important enough until last year.
I got a half sleeve, my own idea, and the artist's interpretation of my idea. It's excellent, a real piece of art, significant to my life, and something I'm very proud of.

Never too late!  I got my first tat in 2004 I was 46.  Now I have both upper arms done and a full back piece almost finished.  Be careful they are very addicting just like headshaving.

Why not?  Taking advice from a 21 year old might not help but I have 6 tats and ear gauges and I'm without regrets.  For the tattoo, you could always perhaps get a fake one and see if you like it.  Then after getting used to it, you can go for it.  As for piercing, if you don’t like it, you can take it out and the piercing will heal.
