Title: Remember the feeling?
Post by: Ricktus on April 30, 2009, 09:37:04 AM
I can remember:

Realising my hair was getting thinner, getting up early for work to try and style it to look like a luscious mane, thinking no-one would ever take a balding guy as anything other than a sad joke, thinking my days of being noticed by the opposite sex were over, wandering why it was happening to me, hating myself, wanting to crawl into a hole, wearing a hat at all times - even indoors in the height of summer, thinking my hair was my identity, considering buying products which promised to regrow my lost hair (at great expense), plastering more and more products into my hair to hold the 'style' in place- a style which is best described as the very beginnings of a comb over.

Yeah, that was all me at the age of 22, I'd had long hair since my teenage years, and the hair loss was forcing me to cut it shorter and shorter. When I looked in the mirror I didn't even look like me anymore, I looked like a sad old man with bad hair!

I was so paranoid about anyone noticing my hairloss that I stopped going to barbers to get a haircut. One day at the age of 24 I was cutting my own hair with this plastic tool I had recently got hold of (think of a comb but with a razor blade concealed in the teeth) and I figured it was time to change the blade, so I put a new one in...

I started running it through my hair at the back, but when I looked at my progress in the mirror, I realised something terrible had happened, the new blade had cut way too much hair. I had a stripe down the back of my head that was like a number 2 crewcut. I tried to tidy it up and even things out, but the more I did the worse I looked, it was at this point that I decided to shave it all off completely... and since then I can honestly say life started getting a whole lot better.

Girls started noticing me again, I gained more confidence than I ever had before, looking back at old pictures, I'd say I definitely look better now ( yeah even the slick version of me vs the full head of hair version!!!!), I learned that my personality-not my hair- is my identity. My hair product purchases consist of safety razor blades and shaving cream. My longterm girlfriend loves me just as I am (lol she hated the shaved head when I first did it, now she nags me when I don't shave it for a few days!!!!)Oh yeah and I've realised that if you are a slick guy who takes care of his appearance and treats others the way he would wish to be treated, people respect you. A lot!
I also realised that with my head shaved I look younger now (in my mid thirties!!!) than I did in my early twenties. I actually had to grow my beard out in order to get served alcohol in shops without ID!!!!

Yeah, life as a completely bald guy... is fantastic!

Anyway, as a long term bald guy, I think this forum is the business. I see loads of posts from guys whose stories echo my own. All I can say is that if they follow the advice given here, they are going to be very different men in a few years time.

Cheers for reading
Rick

Great story!  Please stick around, and help any newcomers - they could use your encouragement.  Hairloss can be quite devastating to some, especially the younger dudes.

Great story and first post, Rick.   O0  There are so many similar stories here, except for the bladed comb (I think.)  Stick around and lend your support to others that are on the fence.  I certainly would have appreciated your story, when I was making the decision.
