Title: Razor No More: A Story of Simplicity
Post by: honestjohnny on April 29, 2009, 12:35:13 PM
I may be committing heresy here, but...has anyone else given up on shaving their head?  I'm talking about with a razor.  I still use a Wahl beard trimmer with no guard once or twice a week, but that's it.  I found shaving everyday to be fussy and sometimes painful, e.g. razor burn, bumps, nicks.   Not to mention the velcro-head that my wife hates. Now I just clip it down on Sunday and/or my day off, before I shower.  No discomfort at all.

I took quite a long break during the winter and buzzed with my Osters only once a week.  I'm lucky that I don't experience shaving irritation, as I do prefer the smoothness of a razor headshave.

Haven't given up yet either, I just cannot resist the feeling of a completely smooth head. Whenever I feel as if I'm getting a painful shave, or having a lot of irritation, I switch up my routine, try new products or take a couple of days off from shaving. Once my skin is healed I jump right back in to having a completely bald head.

I also like it smooth, usually shave 3 times a week.  You might give a shaving oil a try, it gives me the best shave with out irratation...It all comes down to what works best for you, so don't give up

Well, as you can see from my avatar, I still am sly.  Just not skin-tight like you guys  ;)  I've tried oils, creams, combinations thereof, different razors, even Norelco wet/dry shavers, with the grain, against the grain, across the grain, and so on.  I still get bumps and razor burn.  Plus, in 4 hours I have stubble that makes putting a beanie on in the winter a b*st*rd.  I'm happy with what I've got going now.  Nice and simple.  My wife says I feel like a My Little Pony, which is cool as long as she continues to pet me :@`  I was just curious if there was anyone who went all the way, then found that it wasn't the thing for them.  Not because of external pressure, but because they, themselves, found a better solution than the razor.

I take regular breaks, as well. Sometimes my skin just tells me in a loud voice to take a few days off. There is no shame in this. I also like Peter the Bald's idea of changing the routine periodically.
The Shave Secret Oil from Walmart has been very, very good to me as well.
My usual pattern is shaving Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and the only other times would be if I had something special going on where I needed a smooth dome.
This whole sly thing is an individual choice although there are many of us who are involved. As such I think that one sly dude cannot direct another's slyness, only offer help and solace where it is requested.
BTW, that is one mad posture in your avatar. My regards.

HonestJohnny, as long as you're happy, that's what counts.  If you like the slick look, then we can maybe help you find a routine that doesn't irritate you.  But, if you're happy with the clippers, than stick with that.

To each his own.  I can't stop, I shave probably 5 times a week.  I love the feeling of a smooth dome and I don't have problems with irritation.  The only thing that stops me is laziness on a sunday or running late in the morning.

After 6 years of daily headshaving (give or take a break or two), I stopped shaving everything a month ago.  Face, head...smooth no more.  Lotta stuff going on in life; too pooped to shave.  Maybe the slickdome will be back someday.  Maybe.

As a child of the sixties, I NEVER give up and would protest if I wasn't smooth and sly. :x!

To quit, to surrender, to give up, is to fail.

This is what i've been instructed.

If that's what you want man, go for it.

Hang in there, bro. Whatever you feel you need to do, do for you. Don't let anyone pressure you to believe you have to shave daily. It comes down to a matter of personal preference.

I usually shave every day, but I have said in other threads that it's good to skip a day or so every now and then. It's good for the scalp, and when you next shave, it's super smooth.
Plus, some days you just don't feel like shaving.    ;)

Okay, I've changed the thread title, because most of you all seem to think that I need encouragement or advice (thanks everybody ;D).  I'm good, really O0  I prefer not to shave with a razor.  It's easier that way and I'm a huge proponent of simplification.  I guess "giving up" has a negative conotation in our culture.  My mistake :-[ I was just curious if anyone else had used the razor, found it wasn't for them for whatever reason, and went back to a clipper shave or something.

Like Red, that's my winter routine. Nothing wrong with it.

The rest of the year, I razor-shave every other day (as every day creates problems for the back of my neck).

sly is an attitude bro. not hair length. if you are comfortable, then by all means, enjoy. i usually skip days at work and schedule shaves around what i am up to when off. i like to be smooth but just get lazy about it. i am also comfortable these days to have a little growth. but if i am going out or have something planned other than errands or yardwork, then i shave it. stay sly (in the mind) brother!

I've always found using a clippers every couple of days to be a lot more work than daily shaving.   I'm just getting over a bad acne breakout and I couldn't shave for a few days.  I didn't like having stubble at all.

I had to take today off also due to some bad irritation, man it's terrible, my head feels like sandpaper right now. I am not happy  :Xo!

i went from a no 2, to a no 1, to no guard, and then started shaving. i shaved a few times a week for several months= irritation. then once a week for awhile. i too found that the irritation was something i didn't want to deal with. it made my head breakout with acne as well. and i always seem to wake up late for class/work. i also used shave secret oil, creams, gels, etc. with my mach 3. now i've been doing the no guard buzz every couple days. for me, i love it. no hassle, very quick and easy. buzz the whole head in a couple minutes. also, never ever any irritation!! i have mad respect for all the fellas who can religiously shave every day! that's dedication!! but, its just not for me

hey Johnny...I can understand where you are comming from, and to each their own comfort level and routine. if you are happy with the look and feel of it, then it's right for you!

For me its everyday...I have found that its almost addicting for me to have it totally slick and smooth.  maybe once or twice a month I skip shaving because of various reasons like time or irritation. Maybe its because I have only been sly for 4 months or so..but I am not tired of it yet. The clippers I was using when I was at the close crop stage are used for trimming the lower neck into the back area on me once a week (yeah..I might be one of those proudly hairy guys, but I don't want it climbing up my neck like a vine either) and they are more of a nusiance to use that I remember!

Its good to know there are so many others that really like it slick and shave daily or even that second time if need be.
