Thanks for the review.  I've been shaving with a Fusion and would love to get the same results from something like that.  May have to try one.

As a long time user of the Linear I can tell you that you should keep your head wet at all times.  My typical routine is: wet and wash my head while showering.  Apply shaving oil and gel, leave it on a few minutes before shaving.

The Linear shaves so close and the blades move so fast that it is possible to cause irritation if you're not careful.

I'm not sure what's in Bump Patrol, but if there's any alcohol it will probably burn after an intense shave with the Linear.  With practice you'll learn to shave smooth without irritation from too many passes or too much pressure.

thanks simplyred.

question...how do you clean your panasonic? do u do what the booklet says, i didnt have any liquid soap so i just used water but it didnt seem to work that well.

all i could think of after shaving my head with the panasonic is "i hope this thing never breaks!".  thats how good the panasonic shaves.

Get yourself a small bottle of Dawn dishwash liquid.  Just use a few drops in a coffee cup or small glass with very hot water.  Soak the foil and the plastic piece that holds the foil for a few minute, remove and rinse with very hot water.  Now submerge the blades (uncovered) into the soapy water and turn on the shaver for just a few seconds.  Rinse with very hot water.  You can follow-up with an alcohol rinse if you want to sanitize the parts.

I rinse the foil (off the shaver) and the blades several times during the course of my shave.  Gets rid of the excess hair and soap during your shave so your razor doesn't clog up.

Hey Guys - Just picked up the Panasonic!  I use an electric on my face so wanted to try one on my dome too.  The razors always give me irritation on my face and I don't get any from an electric.

Anyway, I have sensitive skin and only use non pore clogging stuff on my face, so I'm wondering if I use the panasonic in the shower - do I need to use some type of oil or shaving cream with it?  Does it make it that much better?

I'd really like to stay away from oils, so would a shaving cream work? And what do you do - just spread the shaving cream all over your head and shave normally through the cream?

Has anyone tried the Panasonic with nothing in the shower - just straight up?

Thanks!

Iggy, I would not use the Panasonic shaver against my skin with no lubrication at all.  The blades shave very close and I think it would be too intense.  Here's my routine:

OK, if you can invest about 30 minutes in your shave here's my routine:

OK, here goes.  I'm not one of those people who has ever shaved their head in five minutes.  I believe that pre-shave prep and post-shave treatment goes into making a highly successful shave.

Get into shower, wash head with St. Ives Exfoliant (every other day only) otherwise, wash head with the cleanser of your choice.  Right now I'm using Citizen Smooth Head Cleanser.  Smells great!

Apply Mario Badescu Pre-Shave Conditioner, then King of Shaves MagnaGel.  Leave on while washing all your other bits

Shave head completely with the Panasonic Linear electric.  Keep head reasonably wet, but don't wash off too much of the gel.  Run the Linear all over your head in every direction that the hair grows.  Keep a good pressure on the razor, but don't bear down to heavily.

Apply more MagnaGel.  Now shave against the grain with the Gillette Fusion (or the razor of your choice).  Rinse, wash head and face with the facial cleanser of your choice.  I'm using Men Science at the moment.  Rinse, then do a cold water rinse before getting out of the shower.

Pat dry.  Apply Thayers Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera liberally.  Let air dry.  Now ice cube rub and another cold water rinse.  Pat dry.  Let air dry again.  Apply Origins Firefighter.  Let air dry.  Apply a good moisturiser before leaving the house.  I'm using Origins Organic or Mario Badescu After Shave Balm presently.  Yes, I am a product 'ho.  I'm always trying different moisturisers.  Start to finish, about 30 minutes.  While you're waiting on all these 'air dry' sessions brush your teeth, or whatever other daily routines you need to do.

That's it!   :o

Ha ha, it's not as work intensive as it sounds.  On the up side, it does give an incredibly smooth, irritation-free shave.

I suppose if you're trying to avoid irritation, you need to do all those steps.
When I use my linear, I just clean my scalp with a good cleansing soap or shampoo, apply some Headslick shave cream, shave, rinse and apply something nice for my skin, like Bald Guyz Moisture Gel.  ^-^

My old one is an ES8043, the new one is an ES8243.

They're both great electrics.  Spring for the extra ~$50 and get the new generation ES8243.  It has an additional row of blades the ES8043 doesn't have.

Just bought the ES7109 Wet/Dry shaver.. comes with the cleaning unit and also a small battery operated travel wet/dry. So far I like it, it is far from the top of the line but at AUD$180.00 it was not expensive. Love the travel razor for those touch ups.

Hey, Red.  How is the Panasonic on the face? I've started using my Norelco on the head again, but it's just too irritating on my face.  I'd like to get my accouterments down to shave oil, foam, exfoliant, shower gel, shaver, pouf.  I'm a low-maintenance dude!

You know, I've never actually used my Panasonic on my face.  I always shave with my Schick eXtreme 3.  I'll give it a try this morning and report back to you.

I tried the panasonic on my face a few days ago.  Man, it was a disgrace!! lol  I don't know
what happened but all I got is my skin would get heated and nothing would come off.
Maybe I don't know how to use it on my face.........I love it on my dome.

Yes I did.  Maybe the problem was the hairs were too long.................6 days of growth.
The hairs on my cheeks are not that thick though.   I will try next time I shave.

I did mine last night with the Panasonic, and it was really quick and a good shave. I would not say as super slick as a blade (I did it dry), but the time taken was only 2 minutes. I had a spot at the back of my head that was playing hard to get, which I fixed up with a blade. The Panasonic would have done it but I didn't give it a chance.

Almost as good as a blade. Initially as smooth but last 2-4 hours less than if i use a blade.

Hi SBG Math Guy,
My comments would have to match exactly Hookem's. I had no irritation and it did quite a good job, the intervels between shaving are a little less, but not too bad.
So I am quite happy with this little razor.

hi guys,

I absolutely love my new panasonic linear!

I got it home, charged it and tried it out.  I am absolutely pleased with this new shaver.

I will say that it took me a little longer because I was afraid of pressing to hard.  I think eventually I'll be very fast with it as I feel able to push harder.

thanks!!!!!!

Mouse,

Thanks for starting this post! I've been thinking about going to an electric for a while now, and am just about sold on the Panasonic 8243.  I wanted to ask where you purchased your Panasonic and more importantly where you managed to find the Total Shaving Solution?  I haven't been able to find it, and I hear great reviews about it.  Amazon used to handle it but now it's not on their website.  I LOVE the video and instructions on Allaboutshaving.com, but I've written to their customer service address 3 times and can't even get a response.  I just noticed today that there hasn't been any update to the site since around August last year.

Any suggestions or advice on the Total Shaving Solution would be very appreciated!

Thanks again!

Hey Skip,

I have a Panasonic ES8243 that's just a few weeks old.  I bought mine from Amazon.  I've been using the Panasonic for over a year.  My first one was an ES8043.

IMHO, the Total Shaving Solution oil is no big deal.  In fact, I wouldn't doubt that it's just Shave Secret packaged as TSS.  It smells the same as Shave Secret.  There are lots of great shaving oils out there.  My fav is King of Shaves Kinexium.  I buy it through AmericaRX.com.

Happy Head Shaving,

Red

Thanks Red, your posts are a big reason I'm leaning toward the Panasonic.  You're the Panasonic guru!!   O0

I am thinking the 8243 because I've heard that the 4 blade systsm really does make a difference versus their 3 blade.  And right now Amazon is selling it at $119 plus free shipping.  I was hoping for a little cheaper but I can't seem to beat that price.

As far as the oils I have to agree with you on the Shave Secret.  The oil does it's job, but that clove scent just doesn't do it for me.  I like the fact that the Pacific only has a very little scent, kind of a "citric" thing...and it doesn't last long at all.

It matters to me because I travel a lot on business, and when I'm on the road I've been using my shave oil as an after-shave moisturizer instead of carrying anything else.  So I really hate having to deal with the scent of clove for most of the day, especially in meetings.  :-[

Post by: Sly Red on June 29, 2009, 01:19:54 PM
If I were you I'd stick with the Pacific because of the easy to use plastic squeeze bottle.  The Anthony and Art of Shaving oils are in glass.

Yes the four blade system is superior to the three.  My ES8043 is the three blade system.

Hi again Red!

Ok, so I finally heard back from customer support at "allaboutshaving.com", in fact the response was from the owner himself. (He's the guy in their video showing how to use the Panasonic in the shower to shave your head.)  His thoughts on the 4 blade system vs. the 3 blade were:

"I'm sure the new Panasonic 4 blade shavers are great but if you're
going to use it primarily for shaving your head I recommend sticking
to the 8077s if it's still available, which I think it is. The reason
is the new shavers have a slightly curved foil/blade assembly vs. the
straight foil/blade assembly on the 8077. I've tried the curved ones
before, they're ideal for face shaving but not so much for head shaving.

So look for a model with these two features - linear motor and a
straight foil/blade assembly - and you can't go wrong. "

So because I have learned so much from this forum, and especially from your posts on the Panasonic and head shaving I wanted to share the quote above and ask your thoughts.  I want to use the Panasonic on my head but I would really like to shave my face with it as well.  Have you tried your new 8243 on your face at all?  Do you think there a difference, or does your older 8043 shave your face any differently then the newer 8243?

I can only compare the foils on my two Panasonics with the picture I picked up on Amazon.

ES8077

ES8043

ES8243

I would still go with the ES8243, as the foil has 25% more shaving area.  I can see no difference at all between the ES8077 and the ES8043.

Thanks once again Red...

I think I'm with you.  I've looked all over the internet and even Panasonic's website.  Obviously I can see the 4 blades vs. the 3, but I can't for the life of me see what 'curve" the new blades are supposed to have.  Panasonic uses the term "Arc" in the name of the new shaver, but their website doesn't seem to explain what it means or tell what's arc-ed.

Basically everyting I am reading talks about Panasonic adding the 4th blade, but I don't see where anything seems to be more curved on the 8243 then it does on the previous models.

Thanks again Red...you sir, ROCK!

I have now done two shaves using a ES8243A I got in last week from Amazon.  I think I'm in love with the new razor.  :D

My goto combination up till this point was a Gillette Fusion, Origins Easy Slider shave oil and Bald Guyz shave gel.

First run was thursday night - four days of growth on the head since I was a bit lazy this last week.  I was a bit disappointed with the Bald Guyz shave gel in this case - had to do a couple applications to keep things sliding along.

Second shave was this morning using King Of Shaves Alphaoil and Headblade HeadSlick - bang up combo - slicker then snot.

Both times I got better, smoother shaves then with the fusion blade with less irritation.  No more problem areas on the head like on the back of my neck. Shave was slightly faster - about 10 minutes total shaving time according to the built in timer instead of about 15 using a blade.

This may actually get me to start shaving every day instead of every couple days.

Great product.  O0

hey everyone,

I'm been using the panasonic for a week now and I LOVE it.

I've learned one thing:  Don't use the lock position unless you're prepared for some razor burn.  I put it on lock a couple days ago and then proceeded to press too hard.  Ouch.

Back to soft and it's perfect again!

thanks Red for suggesting to me the 8243.

Electric shaver on the head?  Sure.  I use a pre-shave conditioner under King of Shaves MagnaGel.  You could use a good pre-shave oil under a gel as well.  Most of us electric users are shaving with the Panasonic Linear ES Series.  If you'd like my complete shave routine PM me.

wtf you guys are using the panasonic linear to shave your head on a daily basis as a substitute for a blade? You put shaving cream/gel/oil on just as you would with a razor? And it comes out just as good? Never heard of something like that being possible... I may have to pick one of these up.

Just like with a razor I find using ONLY an oil with my Panasonic works as well.

I haven't locked down yet on my head shaving technique but I am getting good at it.
Been close to two months now. I shave on average 5-6 days a week.

I recently purchased a Panasonic es8249K from Fry's Electronics. All I can say is , "WOW !!!". I shaved with it exclusively Saturday and Sunday using KoS shaving oil and was really surprised. I did a quick touch up before bed (hate having the pillow stick to my noggen) and all was well. I will give it another week or 2 then give a post on my thoughts on it. But so far all is good with it. Will definitely use it as a fill in shaver between jobs during the week though.

Razor burn, yes, if you apply too much pressure or shave over the same area too many times.  I can't vouch for it 100%, but I've never cut myself.   O0

I have to say that I'm very tempted to give it a go.
Will see how I get on for a month or so with the wet shaves and the HB products just to see if the shaving rash and skin quality improve.
I did have a panasonic a few years ago for my face and it was great.
Just not sure if I can go back to a shave that is not as close as the wet blade.

My take on the ES8249K -

Ease of use: Fairly easy to use, I would recommend at a minimum using a shave oil and water with it. DO NOT press down too hard. ( for me especially around the temple areas) as it may cause some fairly bad irritation.

Closeness: Initially as good as a blade. Re-growth time is a little shorter, but you can use it anywhere so long as you charge it or carry the charger with ya. I have used it exclusively for over a week and a half now with good results. I do a touch-up shave in between jobs and here and there throughout the day.

Good points:
 1) With a razor , any small bump (bug bite, heat bumps, weld splatter, etc.) can be detrimental to a good shave (and a bloody mess.). With this, no worry about shaving off those little buggers.
 2) It is very comfortable when using due to the shape.
 3) It can be used in the shower or out.
 4) Cleaning it is easy, with or without using the included station.
 5) Due to it's generally small size it can be carried anywhere to use for touch ups as needed.
 6) It seems to work well dry, but is better with water and oil or a dab of HeadSlick. (The KoS shaving gel I have seems to cake up in it when using even the slightest amount though, so I don't recommend using a gel with it.)

Bad points:
 1) It is a bit heavy at first (I have never used an electric before).
 2) Replacement blades and foils seem to cost about as much as I paid for the razor itself. But all in all I think that they are worth it as I am very pleased with the shaver so far.

In closing:

Would i recomend this to anyone? - Hell yeah!
Am I glad I bought it? - Again, hell yeah !
I think I still prefer a razor for the everyday shave , but it is good to know that for touch ups and times when you need to stay away from a razor (see note 1 in good points) that this will fill in very well.

NOTE: Putting this in the reviews section as well.
