Title: Origin, use, of the word "sly"
Post by: Dome of Steele on April 12, 2009, 09:30:49 PM
I never heard or read the word "sly" until coming across this site a couple years ago.  I'd like to ask (since you are the experts) about it.

I loved the word immediately after seeing it, I use it, and alot of my haired friends use it as well, for example "Hey, Steele, there's another sly dude! Go talk to him."
I predict that it will be used universally within a matter of time.

1) What is the origin of the word? When was it first known to be used?

2) How wide-spread is its use?  (Just this site?  or all over the world?)  I noticed it's not even on the urbandictionary.com (I might change that soon).

This has been brought up a few times in the past.  A little searching the Forum should get you your answers.

It is a strange word and I don't know what it has to do with shaving your head but I'm sure  that Tyler had a good reason.

Ok, Ok, I reckon if i were to translate sly in this context I would say it means, having a confident attitude but without arrogance! Am I right guys?

Yes..... it's about a look and an attitude, And I don't mean attitude in a bad way.

Thanks to those who actually answered the question.

You see, it's hard to search for the word sly when it is basically in almost every post on the entire site.

This is what a model answer might have looked like.
1) Tyler made it up and started using it in a way not exactly the same as the Oxford-English dictionary (or Webster's) does.  He (or the inventor of the word) has taken it to mean not just the act of taking a razor to your head to show your dome, but also possessing a certain attitude and confidence.

2) It's use is not widespread with the exception of members and visitors to sbg.com and those who know them.  The primary medium of use is this site.

yeah, searching that would be difficult.

Here's the reason:

When I created the site, I wanted to portray this group of guys as being on the edge; original thinkers.  I wanted an adjective to place in front of Bald Guys that told people that this isn't your normal bald guy.  Sly came up as that adjective because of it's meaning to be roguish and clandestine.  I felt it represented the group I wanted to create - guys that are rogue (go against the grain of society) and clandestine in our ways.  We're not truly clandestine, but there are aspects of this group that are.

Sly pretty much is only known on this site, but it could end up spreading.  I think SBG is #1 if you Google Sly.

Well, I think it's awesome and fitting.  Thanks for coming up with something so original!!
 8)

It wasn't first on google, but we if we up the traffic enough it might be in the future.  (merriam webster's definition of sly was first).

And you should think of copyrighting it or something.

Thanks!

Was it on the first page of Google?  For me it shows up first, but it could be that Google now provides results based on which sites you search for and visit.

Thanks for that explanation, Tyler.  I love the word 'SLY'  in SBG's context, and it really seems to sum up the attitude of most of the guys on here: me too, hopefully! 8)

I really hope the 'new' meaning of the word spreads O0
