I`M still getting a nice smooth shave.I started using olive oil under my shaving gel.DAMN, I`m really happy with the feel of my dome. I have no need for moisturizer anymore.I`M getting a nice shave and I`M saving some money.

good stuff tank.

just a question, if one has sensitive skin, does olive oil make you more prone to breaking out?

Ive use olive oil with the Headslick for a long time and it works well.  Olive oil also works well regular bar soap in a pinch.

I met a patient one day and had to verify her birthday per hospital policy (don't want to do the wrong thing on the wrong patient you know).  her birthday indicated that she was 86 - she didn't look over 65 I swear it!  I asked her again to verify her birthday.

I complimented her on how wonderful she looked.  She said that she rubbed olive oil on her face every night before bed.  That stuff is amazing.

Ok I am tired of this.  I need to try some.  :Xo!
So hold on, are you saying after you are done shaving you throw your razor blade in olive oil until the next time you shave?   :D
And then you are also saying you put olive oil on your head?  How long does it take to clean it up?  ???

Yes I keep my razors in a bowl of olive oil at all times. I have a small bottle of olive oil that I use to rub on my head.

Damn, I'm getting so excited here..............ok I think I will try leaving my razors in olive oil.   I don't think I can put any oilve oil on my scalp yet though.   But ok do you have to cover the bowl or not?  One more question.  How long did your blades last you before and how long now?  Specifics would be great.
Thanks so much Tank.  It's really appreciated.

I don`t cover the bowl. I`M going on 2months on the same blade.I would only get a week out of a blade before. You will notice right away how the blade glides of your dome.

No wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!  So one week became 2 months.   This could save me lots of money.  I can only keep my Mach 3 blade for a max of 4 shaves before feeling that I need to change it.  If I can keep each blade for 8 shaves for example, that would be  O0

This makes sense because I started using Shaving Oil on my face before the shave gel I use and it gave a much smoother closer shave with less razor drag.

BTW.. I use "The King Of Shaves" English shaving gel and it's the best shave I have ever had.

I think I read some where that olive oil has a sh!t ton of vitamin Q10 in it, even more so than the expensive cremes.

Coco Chanel (the lady who the perfume is named after) is well known to to bathe in olive oil too I believe.

Yeah I realize that too.   >:(
But hey if it's going to save me money I will do it.   :@`
If it will allow me to keep a blade for 10 shaves for example (now I can only get 4 shaves per blade) then I will
keep the blade in olive oil.   However, if it will only increase to 6 shaves per blade then forget it.
Anybody else trying this olive oil thing?   ???  Come on, I know you all want to save money.   ;)

That is the down side.I just wipe the sink down with a cleaning pad when I`M done.It takes about 1 min. It`s worth it for me.I`M getting a good shave and my fusions are lasting alot longer.

Speaking of the olive oil in the sink, i  remind all that shave in shower like I do, to be extremely careful with the stuff on the floor of the shower or tub.  IT can be extremely slick!
Good point,I have a shower mat in the tube, just taking a shower can be slick.

Wanted to add that I've had a lot of success recentle with vitamin E oil also.  The brand I buy has a little bit of lemon oil in it also.  I original bought it to shave with but have also been using it on the scar left by a recent operation on my chest/shoulder/bicep.  The oil really seems to help soften the scacar and stop the "pulling" around the scar area.

On my head and face, it makes a great shaving creme mixed with regular bar soap.  I rub it on my head first then just put a thin film of regular bar soap. Of course, it works great with HeadSlick also.

I've been keeping my razor in olive oil too. It's been working great at preserving my razors  O0

One thing I don't think anyone has touched on yet is making sure to use Extra Virgin Olive Oil as compared to other kinds. The video below explains why.

Hey Ryan thanks for the update  O0
It's too early for me to report any big news but I am confused a bit about the fact
that storing my mach 3 blade in olive oil makes it more difficult to glide on my dome. ???
Maybe olive oil has nothing to do with it.  In any case, if I can save $90-$130 a year on blades
then I will do it,..............no matter how big a mess it creates.  ;)

Are you making to sure rinse the olive oil off the blade first before shaving? I could see how having the blade full of oil would clog easily if you didn't rinse it prior to shaving.

Thanks for the tip Tank!
I've been storing my blade in the oil for about two weeks and the results are great.  I shave in the shower, so cleanup is nothing.
There is one drawback, if I get the olive oil on my face it makes my skin break out, but if I shave my head before my face, then no oil gets on my face.

I don't use the oil to shave, just to store it, but of course some gets on my head until I rinse the blade after a few passes.

I've done it for two weeks (minus a three day weekend on the road) and normally I would have switched the blade by now.

My theory is that it stops corrosion, keeping the blade sharp longer.  Swords and guns are shipped and stored covered in grease.  It makes sense.

Thanks again.  I'll post my results on the board after another few weeks.

Hey Tank,  my situation is a little complicated.  I used 2 mach 3 razors at once, one for going with the grain, the other going against the grain.  So far  6 shaves for 2 razor blades.  By the end of May I should have more details.
I am hoping that Ryan, Dome of Steele and anyone else trying it could give us their update.  Yesterday was the first time I shaved with mach 3 properly since putting the blades in olive oil.  In the previous 5 shaves I didn't wash off the oil from the blades properly so it was a little hard.   It was great yesterday  O0

I have at least two weeks (maybe three, haven't been counting exactly) with the same blade, no signs of irritation yet.

I just 'swish' my M3 around in some very hot water to get any excess olive oil out before I shave. I've been getting 7 good shaves (head and face) since keeping my M3 in EVOO. Considering I make up to 6 passes during a typical head/face shave, 7 good shaves (42 passes) is very good.

I stand corrected, guys. One of the newest additions to the Skintimate female line of shaving products contains "Olive SOY", NOT Olive OIL as I first posted.

Now what exactly "soy" is , is anyone's guess, but it is very soothing to the scalp and leaves a "keen sheen" when al dente - LOL.

-Cap'n Noodles-

Btw, I tried a little experiment... I got my "Misto" sprayer out of the kitchen cabinet and applied extra virgin olive oil to my scalp under a layer of creamy Skintimate shaving cream.

Fantastic Results!!!!

LOL- Fell asleep after my shave and woke up to a wet tongue licking my scalp....
NO, not what you think guys - it WASN'T my wife - it was my dachsund!!

Well I'm only on the fifth shave while soaking the  blade in EVOO and so far my results are: The soaking seems to have alreay dissolved the lube strip on the Fusion Blade. I also have a little bit of dislike of  how oily it makes my razor, handle etc. BUT I must tell you that this morning I got what I think is the BEST shave I have ever had!!! It could be worth it just for that reason alone.

Guys,

For those of you who may be looking for the right size bottle to store your olive oil in (one that will fit perfect into your shaving bag, here's an idea:

Use an EMPTY HeadSlick, HeadWash, or HeadShed Bottle.

They are ideally the right size to store the oil, keeping it handy for when you want to apply the oil as a topcoat prior to your favorite shave gel/cream. Built-in squirt top is a built-in application bonus!!

Still thinking of best type container storage for oil/razor.

Just an idea that hit me out of the blue.

Guys,

The "Dollar" type stores have a 8.5 oz. bottles of EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL for around $2.
Great Price and size for either soaking your razors or your head.

As an added bonus, I also found a mini-replica of a 5-gallon bottle of water (18 oz. size) - the type that fits the home/office water dispensers, complete with a pop-top cap and handle. Ideal storage container for your olive oil that will fit nicely and neatly -with no chance of spillage- in your bathroom cabinet or locker.

For convenience of travel though, I think your old empty HeadBlade product bottle(s) are still your best bet.

Title: Olivella Virgin Olive Oil Liquid Cleanser for Face/Body
Post by: Noodles on May 25, 2009, 11:26:22 AM
Just happen to come across this product the other day while shopping here in a local grocery.

First time I've ever heard about the Olivella brand name and line of products was coming across it, strictly by chance just the other day, when shopping. Most retailers do not carry entire line of this brand, but the most common products are the liquid cleanser and bar soaps.

Seemed interesting enough, so I thought I'd try a bottle. Below is a bit of info taken directly from the website. For more info, including where it might be found in your area, go to http://www.olivellausa.com/OlivellaLiquidSoap.html

"Olivella Virgin Olive Oil Liquid Soap -

A delicate and neutral blend created for facial
and body care, formulated with active
principles found in Virgin Olive Oil rich in
vitamins A, E, minerals and antioxidants
.
Olivella liquid soap has a light fresh herbal
green scent, characteristic of the
Mediterranean. Olivella liquid soap is pure
Italian beauty, made in the Umbria region of
Italy - right where the olives are grown.
Perfect for those with sensitives skin.
Made in Italy."

-Cap'n Noodles-

Note: When I got home, I attempted to try a little experiment and this product two ways:

1) Straight out the bottle
2) Mixed with a few drops of e.v. olive oil

BOTH ways worked excellent as a prep for the shave forcometh!!

PS ---> Another little gem of a find that I experimented with, that leaves a brilliant shine on the ol' noggin is, after you finish shaving, mix a few drops of SHAVE SECRET SHAVING OIL, with a mixture of OLIVE OIL and BABY OIL. Rub it all into a wet scalp generously. Let AIR DRY for a few minutes, towel (pat) dry excess, and Voila!!

You have then transformed yourself into a SLY GUY GLADIATOR ready to face anything the day brings on!!!                                                      b0x3r   B@n%   #~t

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By the way, fellas - Take a look below...I think I found the "Shangra-La of Shiny Noggins" when it comes to a high-gloss melon. !B@

And the degree of gloss I achieved during a little experiment of mine was quite unexpected, yet welcomed with open arms -  (LOL- my laVatory has become more of a laBoratory lately...LOL)

(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi486.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr224%2Fdmarrione%2FVideoSnapshot-2.jpg&hash=166969331a56c550fd097e6ecc8373419349e306)

After completion of my shaving session, I took a few drops of SHAVE SECRET - mixed in a few drops of OLIVE OIL, with a drop (or two) of BABY OIL...

Let it all air dry for a few minutes, pat excess with a big fluffy towel and buff to a keen sheen.  b!n&

I know it may sound like an extremely greasy combination, and a lot of time and effort - but not so.....
It's time well invested to achieve "my ultimate sly guy look"...  O0

The end result is an extra smooth, extra shiny scalp, that is extremely well lubricated, and as soft as a baby's butt..

Life doesn't git' much better than that.... O:O

SWEET...

Meanwhile...back at the ranch...

Hey Tank,

I'm on the 10th shave with my Fusion. That's as long as blade has ever lasted me and I can't see ANY sign of the blades losing there edge!! Everything from here is fantastic!!

I've been attempting to shave in the  shower (not impressed so far) and I must say, just the left over EVOO on the blade can make the shower a bit slippery. Also, it can make keeping the Fusion very difficult to rinse.

So tomorrow I'm back to preshower shaving and the 11th day. Thanks for the tip I'll keep you posted.

Hey guys, I just ran across this vid and thought some of you might find it interesting. It's about a woman shaving her legs so don't get too distracted! ;D  It is the only place I have found that verifies the advantages of olive oil for making your blades last.

Hey Gary,  You have had 10 shaves with the same Fusion blade so far.
How many did you get before this olive oil thing  (sorry the question mark does not work on my keyboard at the moment)

I used to get 8 - 10 shaves but the last 2 or 3 were starting to get a little rougn. With the EVOO I'm at 10, that's head AND face and the shaves seem as close and smooth as the day I started!

Ok I shaved today and decided that I had enough with this Mach 3 blade.
I used to get 3 to 4 shaves.   With the olive oil I got 6 shaves out of one blade.
I did not get any irritation but I will throw away this blade because my razor will
not glide properly.   :px
I washed off the blade well before using it but it seems that even with that, the olive
oil has created this little problem.  It can be dealt with up to 6 shaves but that's all.

Maybe fusion blades will be different.  I know for example with Schick extreme 3 razors I don't have that problem.  The olive oil makes them even better for gliding purposes but for me Mach 3 doesn't glide anymore after 6 shaves, with the 6th one being a little difficult.

I give a big recommendation for olive oil storage and shaving.
 O0
But I just moved into a house for the summer with three people sharing one tiny bathroom and there isn't really adequate space to store a bowl of oil, it would probably get knocked over and slick up the whole bathroom.   :-X

I still use Extra Virgin Olive Oil as my undercoat now, whereas before I used baby oil.

Dome,
Since your dealing with the issue on inadequate space to store an OPEN bowl of olive oil to house your razors, what about a small plastic container with a snap-on lid?! That would virtually eliminate the issue of someone accidentally tipping the bowl over creating a possible slipping hazard. Unless there are more cons than pros (if any at all) involving plastic vs glass, this may be a temporary solution until you can figure something else out. Just a suggestion I thought I'd pass on.

Thanks Noodles, I think I'm just gonna pop off the razorhead into a ziplock bag or some small container with the oil in it.  That should work, I could just throw it in a cabinet or back in my room.

MathGuy,

Man, it's just hard to imagine why it takes you so long to shave. You sure you're not looking for something that doesn't exist??  Shaving nirvana is attained by very few and certainly not by me. Do I sometimes miss a spot? Yep. Does the razor always "glide" the same? No. Sometimes it will start to drag. I  guess these are things that I just accepted as part of shaving. I seldom got a perfect shave on my face and my head being even more area it's impossible to always get it perfect.

Don't get me wrong bro, if that's what you like and you're happy with it then go for it. It's just got the "math guy" in me wondering!   ;) ;)
Title: Changing Your Oil....
Post by: Noodles on June 03, 2009, 03:35:29 PM
For those of you who have been storing your blades/razors in olive oil for a lengthy period of time now, is there an "unofficial" time frame by which the oil should be replaced?

Even though I rinse my blades throughly before storing them back in the oil, and the oil looks clean,I was thinking that it may be wise to change the oil once a month or so to avoid any chance of microscopic bacteria build-up that we could be, unknowingly, transferring from the oil to our scalps (especially if we nick ourselves).

Has this thought crossed anyone else's mind?

Olive Oil has not made much of a difference for my Mach 3 blades. :-\
Before putting my Mach 3 blades in olive oil they would each last 4 shaves (I shave every 3 days).   Now they last 6 shaves.
I am trying Fusion now and I will see how that goes.   I don't know where things went wrong.   :/O  It was extra virgin olive oil.

I don't think you did anything wrong MathGuy!

My results were: I normally can get 8 to 10 shaves on my Gillette Fusion Power. I put on a new blade and began placing the blades in EVOO to see what I would end up with. Well I was rolling pretty good and then one day I had some razor burn. I didn't think too much of it, gave the head a days rest and tried again. Still razor burn! So I really tried to figure it out. On the third day I put in a new blade and presto, the burn was gone.

So for me I made it to the 17th shave before I had to put in a new blade. That's pretty good but not impressive for me to stick with it. Reasons? The mess, the fear of the dang glass of oil would get knocked over in the medicine chest. Minor things. So end result, it doubled my shave numbers! But I'm just going back to buying blades more often!

Hey Gary, thanks for sharing that.   I am disappointed because Tank used to get one week for each blade, but
with the olive oil thing it increased to 8 week!! (I believe he shaves everyday)
So I was expecting mine to go as far as 8 shaves.   That would be nice.
Based on my experience,  I would not recommend anyone to put mach 3 blades in olive oil.  You may
regret it like I did.   The blade will not glide as well as before.    With fusion I think it will be different because the blades are closer to each other (schick extreme 3 disposable razors, for example,  work better for me when they have been put in olive oil for a few days).
I will put my fusion blade in olive oil and see how that goes.

I use a fusion blade. It`s the only blade that I will use on my head.Everything is not for everybody.I`M shocked it works as good as it has for me.I enjoy shaving but I was spending to much money, trying all the different products.I got a nice setup now,I`M getting a nice shave and saving some money. If it doesn`t work for you. There are tons of products out there, something will work.

Hey Tank,  I didn't say that it didn't work. I got twice the number of shaves over what I normally get. I just decided to pay the price of a new Fusion blade over saving some money. If I need to save some money I will certainly return to the EVOO!

Ok Alright, I just had my second shave with Fusion.   I have to tell you................I love this thing. !B@
Somehow with Fusion the blade had little difficulty gliding over my dome.  I love this.
I wish I had tried Fusion much sooner.   I don't know how many shaves I will get with Fusion + olive oil but I know that I have discovered something special (i.e. Fusion).
Previously I was a little afraid trying fusion because of 4 blades, plus some members here said the blades are very sharp. :'(
The last time I bought 5 mach 3 blades I received one Fusion for free so I thought why not buy this package and give it a try?
In summary, it seems that if the blades on your razor are closer then olive oil will not affect the "gliding" in a negative way. (personal experience of course)

For those Sly Guys who are not too crazy about soaking your blades in olive oil, but want the scalp benefits, here's an alternative that you may like:

As I have said many times in my posts, I'm always one for experimentation with variations in my shaving routine with the goal of making the ultimate shaving experience better and better. Even though I do soak my blades in olive oil when home, this weekend I am in Gulf Shores, Alabama, giving the wife and kids a break from the rat race back home, and knew I had to make some type of slight variation to my regular routine IF I wanted to keep sly while on my weekend get-a-way!!

Here's what I decided to do, and it seems to be working out Extremely Well....

Instead of hauling my container of olive oil with me, I had an empty spare bottle of HeadWash@ home that I filled with olive oil (btw - these bottles, once empty make a great dispenser for either Witch Hazel, Olive Oil, etc. due to the pop-up top dispenser and the bottle size is ideal for traveling purposes)

Anyway, I start off by wetting my head with hot water, then a mix a bit of the olive oil with a dab of St Ives Apricot Scrub. I use this as an undercoat to my shaving gel. Something about the combination gives me the ultimate of ultimates razor glide with absolutely NO razor drag whatsoever. Even after the initial rinse or a secondary scrub, the olive oil base leaves my head with that "bone close" shave, well moisturized (but not greasy-looking) feel and appearance that just screams "touch me"!!  O0

I have had many compliments from other Sly Guys here at the hotel, asking me how I achieve the results I get - guys that are currently either in the beginning stages of their "sly-dom" or those who have been at it a while, but still searching for that "golden moment" when they know they have discovered "nirvana" - and us "sly veterans" know the type of feeling that I'm talking about here - when everything falls just right - from the start of your shave routine to that very last pass with the razor giving you the shave of shaves.... O:O

Naturally, I passed on info about our community here on the web, and I encouraged them to logon and take a look at the valuable info shared here...Hopefully they take a look-see and come aboard...

Kids are just waking up, so I guess it's back to the beach for now....

For a long term update on the olive oil:
I've been soaking my blades in Olive oil since April, and it's now mid-November.
I'm still soaking the blade in the oil between shaves and using an oil undercoat to great results.  I've been using the same Mach 3 razor heads for two months or longer.  This has saved alot of money on blades, and probably on shaving gel too because I've been re-applying it alot less since the olive oil provides all the lubrication I need.

Wow two months on one blade?  Thats awesome.  I know I have went for about 3 weeks or so on one blade.  Especially the blade that came with my Headblade when I purchased it...that damn think lasted for ever, at least 2 months as well.  People thought I was nuts, but I didnt do anythign different other than rinsing it off and turning the head blad up side on the shelf to let it air dry.

Would you like cream or sugar???

Well at least I now know I'm not alone.  I do like Tank.  I oil my head down after a hot shower.  Then I give it a light(very light) lather of shaving gel.  I go over my head once.  Then I hit it with more EVO and go against the grain.  I use it on my head and face.  I used to have bad razor burn on my neck.  That is now gone.  I never thought of putting the razor in the oil for a soak.  I'll have to try that.

After reading these posts with great interest I have decided to try the olive oil storage trick! I usually pay around 8 pounds (12 dollars) for 4 Gillette fusion blades, so anyway I save a few pennies is very welcome, I normally get 1 headshave and 3 to 4 face shaves from one blade. Am starting a new blade today and will be rinsing it properly after use and storing it in olive oil, i will report back accordingly................................

Just an update.  I'm still doing the olive oil storage.  I've learned even a few more tricks that I will now share.

- I just put a few centimeters of olive oil in a small coffee cup that is stored on a high shelf in my shower.   This keeps the oil from getting water in it during the shower.
- I rinse well, then blow any moisture out of the razor head (usually some water flies out), then
- I let the razor sit and dry during my post shower routine to fully dry it out before putting it back in the oil.
