Title: Favorite musicial instrument, and musicians that play it?
Post by: D.A.L.U.I. on April 06, 2009, 04:40:50 AM
I loaded my mp3 player last week to get it ready for a road trip.  When I'd finished I reviewed the music and it came to mind that I obviously have a preference for one instrument and a couple of musicians who use it.  I was  curious, do the SLY brothers have a preference for a musical instrument and artists who use it?

My favorite instrument is piano.
My favorite musicians that use the piano are:
James Booker
Dr. John
Marcia Ball

What about the Brothers?

I love the saxophone. I'm not schooled enough in sax players to know who is good at it.... but I know it when I hear it.

Has to be the saxophone as well. Anyone remember Timmy Cappello. He played sax for Tina Turner a good few years ago. He also did a song for the soundtrack to Lost Boys called "I still beleive" Awesome!

Clarinet, both classical and jazz.  The greatest clarinetist for jazz has got to be Benny Goodman.  I also enjoy Eddie Daniels for jazz.  Larry Combs, principal clarinetist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Richard Stolzman are both fine crossover players.

Best classical clarinet piece ever:  Mozart, Clarinet Concerto
Best contemporary piece: Berstein, Prelude, Fugue & Riffs, for clarinet & jazz ensemble

Guitar has to be my favorite.  Just sitting around a camp fire or where ever and just having fun.
My favorite guitarist?  Well for now I will have to say my daughter Chelsea.

Personally I'd have to say Guitar as well and as for favorite artist it'd definitely be Satriani!

After that I'm torn between the Kazoo, Triangle and the Juice Harp!!!

Stephen-

That is EXACTLY the kind of sax I'm talking about! That is a great song on one of my favorite soundtracks of all time.

have you ever heard of Jamie Cullum? Some of the brothers across the pond might have heard of him. Hes really good, and it looks like his live shows are a good itme. He plays the piano, then he uses the key cover for beatboxing. Its really neat.

My favorite instrument has to be a standup bass. The full, deep and rich sound of maple and spruce is calming, complex and serene. Its great. O0

I play the piano, keyboard, and bass guitar.  Piano is my favorite.  My wife and I play in our church's worship band, and she plays piano too, so I don't get to enjoy it much.

I like rock piano songs like from Coldplay and The Fray.

Being a drummer I have to pick drums - for playing style I have to pick Keith Moon 'The Loon'. But for playing ability its got to be Chris Adler from the band Lamb of God. Chris Adler jamming away - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoUDmblntxU&feature=related

I played sax from elementary school through college. Played in jazz bands and really enjoyed it (wish I would have stuck with it, I was pretty good). Although sappy, Kenny G is an excellent straight soprano sax player (I tend to gravitate towards the modern style of jazz). Other sax players I like include Najee, Jeff Kashiwa (Rippingtons), and Dave Koz (you'd like him Mike  ;D).

OK - This is going to sound crazy, but my favorite is the pipe organ.
I play piano and organ and love both actually.

www.pipedreams.org is a really awesome website if you're into organ music.

Neil Peart - Rush, one of the best.
Dave Lombardo - ex Slayer, tremendous.
Tommy Lee - Motley Crue.
Joey Jordison and the other guys from Slipknot are awesome too.

Too many more to mention.

Coming from a drummer, I'd have to say drums, Derek Roddy, Buddy Rich, Paul Mazurkiewicz and John Longstreth are some of my favorite. But guitar is a damn close second. I'm a huge Steve Vai fan.

Since I am a percussionist my first love and respect goes to percussionists and drummers the players that come sprining to mind first are....

Artis The Spoonman - Spoons, Bones, Ladles

Victor Wooten - Soloist and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
