Can you remember the first time the thought of shaving your head completely first entered your mind? I can remember an interview that Yul Brynner gave to 60 Minutes in the early 80s. It showed him getting ready to go on stage, and part of that preparation was, of course, shaving his head. Up to that point I never realized that his head was shaved. I just thought was a guy who didn't have any hair; I had never thought about it. It was kind of shocking to think that he'd actually shaved off his hair. But at the same time I couldn't help wondering what it would be like to do it. It wasn't something I thought I'd ever actually do, but I wondered what it would feel like.
Another occasion was around the same time. I can remember a conversation with someone who sat next to me in homeroom. The topic of going bald came up somehow and out of the blue, he said that if he ever went bald when he got older, he'd just shave his head completely. "Think of all the money you'd save on shampoo," he said. I just sat there and thought, "Are you nuts?" :/O I think I said something to the effect that it was something I would never do under any cirucmstances. :px But again, it made me wonder what it would be like. Funny how that conversation has stuck with me all these years.

It's strange, but i never really thought about going SLY until about a half a year before I did. My barber was SLY and I used to have a close buzz when I went in. Like you said, I never really thought about him shaving his: just imagined he was bald all over for some reason. Then, one day, I was in the chair and he was telling me how a guy came in and asked for a shave and then he started telling me about how he shaved his own head. that was the first time I got very tempted to ask the barber to shave all mine off too, but at the time I just didnt have the guts to do it.
About 6 months later I did it for myself. 8)

Sounds like he was trying to tell you something. ;)

I first thought about it around 14 years ago when I met my wife's (then new girl friend) very cool Uncle that shaved his head.
I remember thinking "This is one cool ass Dude that looks even cooler because he shaves his head".

I first thought about it in High School. If only I had known how cool it was then... O:O
It took another 20 years (give or take) and after deciding that 2 years of a hair "system" wasn't for me, to decide to go all the way.
Glad I did!

About 9 years back I went to Great America and there were all these guys with shaved heads, I guess a basketball team. It seemed really cool how all these guys my age were shaving their heads, so that planted the seed.
I ended up shaving the next summer.

Interesting question,
About 6 years ago I got to know that sometimes men shave their heads when they lose hair.
This I thought was done to cover their hairline. I never thought I would be shaving my head one day.
I even remember a sister of mine made the joke "can you picture .......( me) bald? OMG it would be funny" and then she laughed along with another sister of mine. Back then they were 13 and 10 years old, respectively.
Therefore, when my hair started going thin and I got crazy dandruff I remembered the incident and that's why I delayed shaving for a number of years.
The thought of going sly crossed my mind after visiting this web-site. I honestly thought by shaving my head I would look like a monkey or something lol. But looking at the pics from many of you (I am straight just to be clear) I saw many of you look great in the shaved head...............That time I thought to myself I think I can look good because all these men have shaved heads and they look amazing.
The thought crossed my mind in the summer of 2007, a few days after staring at the shaved heads at slybaldguys.com. (By the way, my sisters now think the shaved head really suits me)

Yes, a brother of one of my friends was sly and I thought it looked cool. Consider my families genetic patterns I filed that one mentally and ended up going sly about 6 years after that.

I guess some time in the 90s when it moved more mainstream and I began to realize I was probably going to have a "hairy toiletseat" issue in my neighborhood. Then, about 7 years or so ago a friend of ours developed alopecia, and lost a lot of his hair and buzzed down the rest. That's the first time I told my wife I'd shave it absolutely, no buzz, if I got anywhere near that bald. She freaked, I should have known.

I thought about getting a buzzcut for about 2 years before actually going for it, starting with a #2. Then, 2 months, went to #1. Have been shorter since then, now with 0 on top really tight sides & back that I let grow and then self buzz back to a #1 occasionally. I prefer the tight buzz, but think about trying the shaved style on vacation...maybe this will be the year. My barber also had suggested a buzz or high & tight a few times as had my wife before I did it. Looking back, I wish the barber had been more direct with me. I had never really thought about actually shaving until I realized so many men did shave due to MPB, from what I read on sites like this one (which is the best I've found).

Shaved heads fascinated me since way back when Kojak was a hit TV show. But then, in college, a buddy in ROTC got a botched crewcut at a barber college and said "Screw it. Shave it all off". He came back to the dorm pissed but looking cool. I really wanted to try it, but in the early 80's, it was way too radical.
In the early 90's I had one very close friend with a shaved head and was I was dying to try it. FInally took the plunge for the first time in 1995 - I was 34 with a full head of hair. While I still grow it out sometimes for a change, I always come back to sly...

Some of you might remember this. The first time I thought about going sly was immediately after I proposed to my wife. Her parents planned a huge engagement party at the Yacht Club. Things were getting way out of hand. I wanted some control of the situation, so I scraped off my full head of hair. Anyway, I showed up to the party bald. I guess you could say that I was testing her true feelings for me. There were some shocked looks at first. But to sum it up, the fiance and her parents were receptive to my slick head. They said it gives me more character. I've been SLY ever since. 8)

I first thought about it when my oldest brother did it like 10 years ago. When my uncle had it all through child hood I always thought he was naturally hairless but then onetime I saw him shaving and thought it was interesting. I didnt think much about it until around the holidays when my girlfriend pointed out that I was starting to have thinning hair. I talked to her about it was thinking about it more and more then I found this site and all the cool Sly guys here nudged me into it so now I am Sly and loving it.

It all started when I went to a local Sport Clips after years of having my wife cut my hair. They asked me what number cut I wanted, and I had no clue. It ended up being shorter than anything my wife had ever done. I liked it so much, I went back a couple weeks later and tried something shorter. I did that one more time and then realized I could do that myself with a pair of clippers. I don't remember how long I did it myself, but it wasn't long before it all came off without the wife's permission. Four plus years later, I'm still sly and loving it. She wasn't thrilled at first but understands that I hate the old balding look, and sly is really the only option that I'm happy with.

I always thought that Yul and Telly looked great with their shaved heads. But I never thought I could pull it off. But around 1990, I started losing more hair in the front where it was noticable. So I started doing crewcuts and noticed I had a good head shape. I had a customer suggest that I maybe shave my head as he already thought I was a baldie anyway. Then I started seeing more men shave their head. Finally I took the plunge at Buhner Buzz Cut night at the Seattle Mariners. Since then I have been hooked. While I may occasionally grow the hair out, Sly will be my primany look.

in my small town, i never even saw anyone with a buzz shorter than probably a half inch. so definately no shaved heads. and i've only had one friend who had some thnning on top, and hes been taking propecia and rogaine since he was 17 (7years)!! and i refuse to do that. one day a couple years ago i saw a picture of him and i (we were bandmates) at a gig. his thinning hair looked horrible, and my "M" pattern hair also looked horrible! our bass player had really lthick ong hair and we were all in the picture. the two of us just looked out of place being so young with MPB next to our bass player. i thought about it for days after that, and finally grabbed a pair of clippers and buzzed it all off, then got out the mach III.

First time I thought about it is when I saw a picture of me that was taken out in the sun I think.....whatever hair I thought I had when looking in the mirror seemed to be transparent in bright light. Thats when I knew it was time...I was just like...what am I holding on to here ?

I think a lot of us have photos like that. The camera can be cruel, can't it?

Yeah, I have had some pictures where you can see the "bird's nest" on the backside as well as video.

I first thought of it about 10 years ago when I was still a corrections officer. I always wore a hat and got tired of hat head and couldn't do anything with my hair in the Wyoming wind.

I think I was in Junior high and we were talking about fathers going bald from stress. At the time I figured I was going to bald because I take after my father and a girl said I would look good with a shaved head.
