Title: Once a bro, always a bro...right?
Post by: BALDANDRE on February 28, 2009, 12:22:27 AM
Hey guys...

couldn't hang any longer, Ghost called me out a couple days ago and now I'm feelin' a little guilt here.....

I'm a bit hairier these days...

a long snowy winter, boredom, pure wonder, the old what is truly BBC issue and curiosity got the best of me. Having been around the ska scene I've always had the love for retro 50's inspired flattop... then having the attitude to do all the things in life you told yourself you would, I had to try the speed racer "Race Bannon"/ GI Joe flattop beard combo look...

well I did it...so am I still able to contribute here?

...I love the look and everything a slick bald head represents, 15 years slick should tell ya somethin...the attitude that comes with a shaved head is awesome..I WILL be bald again, probably sooner than later..

just wanted to "check" another thing I'd said I'd do off my list!

Stay as slick and sly as your are bro's...

I'm not going any where...just changing it up for the moment!

You're still sly in my books.  I wish I could mix it up like that, but there is just nothing much going on in the middle of my head.  We know you'll be back sly soon, and besides 15 years experience makes you a member of the sly hall of fame.

You're still da man!
Honestly, I do the same thing occasionally. Grow it, after 2 or 3 weeks I shave it back off.

It's all about the 'tude!

Hey, Andre, I'd probably do the same thing (if I could)...lol

By all means, don't leave.  It wouldn't be the same without you here.

Guess we're on similar paths here. I gotta admit, you look totally different with some coverage on top (maybe it's the "I'm gonna kick your azz" growl you got going there).

Yeah, totally stick around. Your contributions and words of advice to guys on the fence are invaluable.

Your bro down south,

Yeah, BA, it wouldn't be the same here without you.  When I joined the forum, you were one of the first to welcome me and encourage me.  So, thanks for that!  Wish I could do what you're doing, but the MPB is getting worse and I could never do the flattop.  Have always wanted to do that.  Every once in a while, I let my hair grow for a few weeks, but then shave it off again.  The landing strip on the front of my head is getting smaller and smaller and it just doesn't look good.

This post made me feel a bit better. I also am allowing some growth. I am applying to join the police force and will feel better going for interviews etc with a bit of hair. Not much. Just a light covering.

Slybaldguys w/o the Enforcer?  Never--as w/ others here might try it if I could but what's left is thin and asymmetrical so I'd look more like an A__ than I do now.

Do you roll up a pack of Lucky Strikes in your Brando T-Shirt? ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ha! ;D

Thanks guys!!!!! Means a lot...it does.

One thing I WILL never do is say I'm leaving SLY...like I'm done with it and have no reason to dig it ...or heck respect the power of it...I fully believe it is just that... EMPOWERING...

but it's the same with this look I'm playing around with...just knowing I could pull off a different look ( I was actually scared NOT to be shaved smooth!)...and go through with it..

So don't worry Razor and guys..I'm still way pro-bald and will be shaved slick again, once this phase gets tired...you all look too d@mn good for me NOT to come back!

Heck, for the record I have to maintain this thing every 5-6 days...since I have it so tight

it's as much up keep as a shaved dome!

BA:
The flattie looks way cool! And yeah, you better stick around. You've represented the SLY movement and helped so many dudes get off the fence (including me) that you have earned a permanent SLY hall pass that never expires!

Like you and GASlick said, it's all about the 'tude and the all-empowering confidence that slick SLY can give a guy. Can I get an "Amen"?

Not a bad look Andre but it must be high maintenance.

That's right, it must take a LONG TIME to keep that plate flat--are you using a barber or some device?  And keeping a beard trimmed at the same time.  It's got to take you lots of time to get ready.  Do you have to use wax or some 50's hair stuff, "A Little Dab Will Do You" to keep it standing up?

It's a wake up to see your posts now, not a bad, but still a shock.

BaldAndre,

I don't think that we've evercorresponded outsid this forum or by way of PM, but I agree with the others. Once a brother always a brother. Everyone has there own reason for going SLY and those who can from time to time choose to re-grow their hair. We always tell those looking for support to do what makes them happy for themselves and not to listen to others, when it comes to shaving their head or not.
Then why should we expect it to be any different when one of our members decides to grow it back? Again do what's makes you feel good Andre, and know that you are always welcome here, and I would be proud to call you my brother, with or without hair.

Shock...well I hope not to much of one...and all my posts are all still 100% pro bald and true...

I'm a bald guy with a haircut is all! ;)

Yea, up keep is about every 5-6 days...the trimmin' day is about 40 minutes, self inflicted with my trust clippers and trimmer..and mach 3! I did a barber 2 times...first one a REAL tight horseshoe flattop..ok, but my looks can't hang too well with that extreme cut...the second EXCELLENT..but he was in Cali :(..

so I do it...kinda more up keep...but the in between days much faster

and haven't found butchwax...just doin' heavy duty gel...

for 1/8- 1/4 inch ring of hair!!!

Fun cut though...but boys I will be 100% smooth...it is me more than this cut is...

just somethin' fun.

One of my big regrets is never having tried a flattop while there was still enough hair to work with.  It is a radically different look for you, and entirely unexpected so that's where the shock factor comes into play.

My appearance has completely changed over the past 5 or 6 years and it can be difficult to adjust to, even when the change is an improvement.  You get used to seeing yourself a certain way and it can be jarring when you look in the mirror and it seems like somebody else is staring back.

This whole conversation has really driven home for me, though, that I really wouldn't want to go back to having hair again.  I'm not good with change, and having survived some pretty dramatic ones, it would be really hard for me to change again.  I'd also be afraid to have hair again -- afraid that I'd be pressured by my family to keep it, making it that much more difficult to return to the sly look.

Well bro I see where you're coming from...but you know what, I understand..because you've now taken control of your looks...for the good..

the slick bald head, goatey and buffed up look...you worked at it and did good! Long time comin'!

Like you I wanted no regrets with being bald...I never tried this look and have wanted to..I had a flattop (but not this short and extreme) and never with the beard...so I get to 'check" it off and I think it worked out cool! The bald landingstrip is way cool too!

Bootedbear...a compliment is a compliment, no matter what sex...

thanks!

Well ya do bro...grow a chisled beard...shave off the goat....stop "gymin' it and get chubby...stop the gym and get real thin...

or continue lookin' good and do just what you are doing my friend! ;)

So, a question on the beard, are you keeping it when you return to the Land of Sly?--from my recent experience it's so expertly developed and trimmed-you must have some extensive experience and tools for that matter.  Did you just do it, or did someone help you out on the hows and whys of maintaining such a polished look :/O :/O :/O?

Not so sure if I'd keep it..kinda like the Mr. Clean look...plus it might be too bottom heavy.

trimming the beard...good eye and same philosophy as a good "faded" haircut...the guards get smaller as you move up the sideburns...

oh big thing...shape the top of YOUR stach area ( a bit)...I've learned giving your nose "some breathing room" gives a cleaner better look!

I'll photoshop ya what I mean on your avy..if you want ;)!

Thanks too Wpruitt!

Hang onto it for a couple of days after you scrape the dome clean and see what it looks like.  It would pretty cool with an earring.   ;)

Hey BA - the flat-top really suits you for a change, and I love the toghtness of it at the sides: its a good look for you O0

Wish I could have tried it but I've always had the wrong shaped hairline up front!

Love the beard combo too: very sharp 8)

Please don't take offense, but considering the "whole show" I just couldn't keep the lines from Tennessee Williams' poem, the Gold Tooth Blues out of my head, the refrain that keeps repeating in my mind when I look at them is

"I'm a gold tooth woman, with the gold tooth blues,
'Cause a gold tooth makes a woman look old."

The grey, the look in toto does put some years on you, they won't card you anymore at least.  But like I said, please don't take offense.

You look great Andre. I'm all for changing it up, and it seems you've done a good job. I think Mr. Clean is your best look, but not because of some ridiculous Sly over everything view, just because you rock the look really well. As everyone else said of course stay, you've given alot to this board hair or no hair.

Keep well bro!

Yea, I know the whole flattop thing, it's just so not the norm (at all) or cool...but that's what a shaved head was when I first started too! Once again like all of us here...it's nice to be out of the crowd!

BTW, I agree, the beard helps me dig the look...

I used to see a lot of flattops at the beginning of each summer.   But come to think of it, I haven't seen many guys getting "summer haircuts" for the past few years.  Maybe after a certain age, guys are either already bald or just afraid the hair won't grow back if they take too much off?  I don't see many summer cuts among the younger crowd, either, though.

Who said change is bad. Change can be good when it's implemented the right way. And you know what....
you've got another very cool look going on.  8)

I'm betting though, that you'll be back to SLY by the summer.
Oh yeah, I agree....

All is good Andre. You'll always be SLY regardless of the amount of hair on your head.

I did the same thing a while back and grew my hair out for almost a year. I just got tired of shaving it every couple of days. Sometimes a little change-up is good.

The flattop looks good, buddy.

Sorry for the late remarks (gotta love a good old-fashioned power outage) but you look like a hard ass with the new 'do! sometimes you just have to break the monotony of the same image and toss it up every now and then. Besides, sly is like a school of thought. The hairstyle is just fringe benefits.   O0

Thanks bro (s)....

You just gotta do things you mean to do...a "life checklist"...I'm doin' it and love that I've done it...I'll keep it for a while...sh!t after I give my self the 5 day maintainance cut, I'm practically bald and sly again anyways...it's only 1/4 inch of flat hair making the difference with a bald head on the rest of my head...

oh and the cool beard...so yea, it is different than my "Mr. Clean"!

Thanks again guys..

You're all pretty cool and very SLY! 8)

Hey guys...

couldn't hang any longer, Ghost called me out a couple days ago and now I'm feelin' a little guilt here.....

Once a bro, always a bro. Your cool in my books dude, hair doesn't change that.

I wouldn't want to meet you in a dark alley.

That makes you a bro.

You do look good BA, no doubt about that. But as some other bros have said, SLY is the 'tude

Looks great man! When you go slick again, maybe try keeping the sculpted beard. That might look cool with the bald head. I myself can't do a flattop (or anything meaningful on top of my head!), but I do mix it up with the facial hair. Nothing wrong with mixing it up!
