Title: Today is the day...
Post by: Mike on February 25, 2009, 01:56:22 PM
Today is the day I am going to go Sly. This morning I drove over to Coeur d' Alene to go to the walgreens and picked up a set of clippers, a head blade, some headblade shaving stuff, and a bottle of headlube glossy. I also got some apricot scrub stuff too. I am going to do it sometime today, I will get some before and after pics. I am so excited!

Well I did it. I had my brother shave the hair off then I showered and used the head blade. I thought it was going to be harder or that I would cut myself but I only cut one spot on my ear. Then I rinsed in cold water which felt different, it seemed like all the skin on my head shrank or something. After that I put some headlube glossy on and took pics. I like it and so does everyone that has seen it so far.

Okay here is before

Thanks, I love it so far. I went out to the garage to grab something and it was like nothing else. Even in the house I can feel the heat with my head before I feel it else where.

Great look,  brother.

BTW when you finish with a cold water rinse, it does close the pores and the feeling is instantaneous.  At least that's how it works for me.  Also, then when you apply the headlube it is easy to detect any little spots that you may have missed on the shave.  The clean up then is pretty easy.

Keep us informed on reactions.  Congrats!

Lol, I don't know if anyone else has had this happen before but when I walked past a mirror I had to look twice because it didnt 'click' in my head that it was me. I am also suprised that I only have one small scar on my head, I fell out of trees and off of roofs and down stairs so many times when I was younger, I thought I was going to have gashes and gouges but it looks 'normal'. My head has an odd numb feeling to it but my older brother said it should go away in a couple days.

It looks great.  With hair, you look like a nice, young guy.   Shaved clean, you look like a bad ass.    You made the right decision.

Hey be sure to give Mch III a chance.   I have never used headblade but Mach III is probably the easiest razor to use.  Not only that but it gives you a really smooth shave.    O0
You can keep going with headblade, but for a beginner I don't know it wouldn't be too good of an idea if you cut yoruself really bad from headblade..........if you have followed some stories here when the headblade cuts you it will hurt bad!!!!  With Mach III even someone like me who still struggles to shave fast enough can have a great shave without cuts and bleeding.  Cheers.

Thats what the neighbor said, they were like "you looked so nice before, now you look tough" which isnt a bad thing.

I used the headblade for most of it then for the back of my head where it meets my neck I used my Fusion. I didnt miss any spots when using the headblade but then again I spent probably 10-15 minutes shaving, I went with the grain then against then did the bigger touch ups after that then my neck.

Andre it is super cool. I noticed when it was all buzzed down that there were a couple areas that were much thinner than others. But I am still BBC  O0

looks good dude!

Enjoy that numb, newly shaved feeling.  It fades after a few days and after you scalp toughens up you don't feel it anymore.  I loved that feeling.

Wait until you go out in the rain.  That feels good.

Great look O0, now go for your 30 day trial run--it's important.

Re: numbness, the following is an excerpt from a post I did here in 10/2007, five days after I did the deed--I had followed the buzz path,--

"Question for more "mature" sly guys.  Immediately after the first shave, Fusion Power, I noticed a strange sort of "numbness" all over the scalp, it's going away now, but it was a little strange.  Anyone else remember that response?  I'm shaving every morning now, and at this early point find it very refreshing.  The stubble by the next morning is like velcro although not extremely visible.  I like the freshly shaved feel, that is worth the price of admission in and of itself. "

Hope and expect you to be as satisfied as I and the other Brothers are on the SLY side of life.

I am still loving it. Its odd though, last night I shaved my head at around 6 or so and shaved my face at around 8 and the hair on my face is already visable. I cant even really feel any stubble on my head, its still pretty smooth which is nice. I kinda like the numbness in a way.

This morning it was snowing and I had to take the trash can out to the curb and felt snow flakes on my head, it was pretty cool. My second oldest brother who was kinda against it at first said that he thinks I look older and more mature than when I did with hair. My girlfriend also said that is makes me look like I am a couple years older, she suggested I grow some stubble on my face but keep a smooth head so I think I may try that.

The conventional wisdom is that going sly makes younger guys look a bit older and older guys look a bit younger.  I think that is so.  There must be some age where you just look the same.
Title: Re: Today is the day...
Post by: Mike on February 26, 2009, 10:30:52 AM
Lol, yeah. It seems that all sly guys stay between the ages of 20 and 40 even if they are younger/older.
I am sure I will be able to do the 30 day challenge with ease. I really like it and I just may keep it this way forever like my uncle. He started shaving when he was in his early 20's and is now in his late 50's and still shaving.
 Thanks for all the support

Lophura:  You're a SLY dude!   O0  It looks great and it's good news there was minimal bloodshed.  I'm a Headblader -- all I've ever used -- and do just fine with mine.  The nick on the ear is a notch in your experience.  Congrats!

Just wondering how often I should shave. Right now I am able to feel some stubble, its enough to make myknit cap stick. Is it long enough to shave again?

YES, most definitely you can shave it now, although having had to endure really cold temps recently, I found it was disconcerting to have my beanie riding up on a freshly shaved noggin.  Worth it though, I'm one of the guys that like it  baby butt smooth--and that feeling first thing in the morning is a real spirit lifter for the day.
Your shaving time is really fast for a new guy, that took me a couple of weeks to achieve.  Glad it's everything you thought it would be.

Congrats bro!  Looks great.  And the girlfriend likes it.  You've got it made.  Keep it smooth.  I remember the excitement of that first shave, and I have to say that a lot of that excitement is still there for me.  I wake up every morning looking forward to shaving.  You just can't beat the smooth, clean feel.

Thanks. I like the feeling of the smooth head and the stubble doesnt feel as good. I went to the store and my first instinct was to grab a hat. When I put on a baseball cap it didnt look quite right. My cowboy hat fits better though so now I wont have to buy a new one  O0

So far I havent told my mother about it yet, I am nervous about what she is going to say but I will just tell her that its my head and everyone else likes it so she should get used to it.

Just remember you are and will remain her little boy, and she still remembers the details of your first haircut and how she combed your hair to go places.  It could go either way, but you're dealing with a potentially complex emotional response.  You can handle it, of course, because you are Sly and belong Sly.

I never thought of it that way. I am hoping she will like it but you never know. I told my dad about it and his response was something along the lines of "people with shaved heads are normally bad people" or something like that. Then I told him that there are more bad people with hair than there are bad people that are bald. Then he made the Nazi comment and I made refference to the topic about it here, after that he changes the subject.

I guess father's have that in them too.  Mine had thinning hair and the last time I was with him he had tightly buzzed hair and I had a #3.  For that reason he didn't really react to the change from combover to buzz.  He died before I went to the full monty.

I don't know if your father has balding issues or how he's handled them.  But, speaking from a father of girls, I think it's probably the same as with mother's.  Our children are not only an extension of ourselves but also in a weird sense a reminder of how age is changing us.  We're not the center of their universe anymore, nor are we the final judge and arbiter of their lives and taste.  It's not an easy pill to swallow, but as long as you treat the matter as one under your control as an adult and not as a threat to our "authority memories" we live with it.  And after one or two run in's with the newly assertive child, now adult, we accept it.  But that doesn't mean we don't have a twinge of regret about how fast the years have gone by, how our child doesn't need to grab our hand to feel safe, etc.  If your dad is going or is bald, your choice to join the Bald Nation could be a good example--and in that happy event a great source of shaving supplies when the $$$ get short as you start out in college or whatever.

Thanks. It is pretty awesome, I have an amazing shine to my head. I was sitting on the couch and went to turn on the laptop and saw the shine on my head, I took a couple pics but the camera wont capture it right. My bro said he can actually see his reflection in my dome. When I went to the little store down the road the guy that works there is always nice and when he saw my shaved head he said it looked cool. So far my father is the only one that has said anything negative about it. And he has almost no hair on the top of his head, just a hairy toiet seat style of hair that is probably 3-4" long. I am hoping that when my oldest brother shaves (plans on doing it soon) that he will finally give in and atleast buzz it down. It would be amazing if he would go Sly.

Glad you're enjoying the new you.  It was a long time before I stopped staring at my head.  I would check myself out in any number of reflective surfaces -- store windows, any mirrors in clothing stores, etc.  Make sure you use sunscreen if you're out for any period of time -- the last thing you want to do is burn the head.  Then you'll have to wait to shave, and it looks too good to have that happen.

I think it comes with Slydom, I never really looked in mirrors or anything when I had hair but I do it all the time now. I used to make fun of a friend because he was always looking at himself in everything and his hair had to be just right, he had gel in his car just incase his hair got messed up. Now I feel like him always looking at myself to make sure my dome is still nice looking making sure there isnt a fuzz ball on top or a string from a shirt and I have a bottle of headslick and a razor in the truck just in case I need a quick touch up before a dinner or a meeting.

Yep. I put it in the truck yesterday before we went out to dinner with some friends and family, I had a spot that I didnt have time to get before I left to pick up my girlfriend so I stuck it in the truck and did a touch up when I got to her house. When I got in her house with my headslick and headblade she looked at me like I was crazy then I told her I had to if she wanted me to have a smooth head. She simply smiled and let me carry on. Now I need to pick up another bottle of headlube so I will have one set of shaving things at home and one in the truck incase I stay the night somewhere or need to shave on break at work, lol.

 Very true.

I decided to take the day off of shaving because of the bad razor burn yesterday and so far up util today the only person that rubbed my head was my girlfriend. Then today I have the horrible sand paper feel and everyone wants to touch it. It seems like its always that way though, when I am not ready for something it happens and when I am ready nothing happens. I think I just might hsave tonight before going out.
