Title: I'm newly SLY!
Post by: rkymtnchi on February 23, 2009, 06:50:56 PM
I've been thinning a lot over the past few years - I'm 28 now.  I was fed up with my nearly non-existent crown and receding, uneven hairline and it all came to a head (hehe) when I tried to get a hairpiece last week.  I was really excited about it, and thought it looked pretty good.  However, it was such a pain to manage, even for the one week I wore.  I was constantly tweaking it, edges were rising up, and I was always paranoid about others noticing.  I felt like it was consuming my life - I can't imagine how those stuck under one for years feel!

Plus, the hairpiece felt a lot different than my own hair, to both the touch and feel.  Even though they looked like a passable match, they behaved way differently.  When the piece hair got wet, or I slept in it, it matted and looked and felt awful.  Anyone who says you can run your hands through the hair in a piece when wet is telling you a lie - unless it is perfectly brushed out.  There was a constant hovering feeling of the hair at all times, and it's quite odd to have hair on your head with no feeling.

Thankfully, I went the DIY route, so there were no evil contracts holding me back from trying to go SLY!  As most who wear/wore a piece know, they shave your head in the horseshoe pattern to place the system.  Therefore, my only way out was to go sly - unless I wanted to look REALLY ridiculous as a 28 year old with a full, barren NW7.

Here is a shot of the new me!

Way to go man.  You don't want the pain of a piece.  You pull off the look without a doubt.  I just went sly too and it's taken the dread of balding away.  Good stuff isn't it?  Congrats man.

And you like the alternative to the system, rkymtnchi?

Oh yeah, I love it!  I can't wait to go to work tomorrow and preach against the tyranny of the "hair system".  I'm sure people noticed last week, and will be a little shocked, but for the better.

Welcome to the board. Glad you decided to not deal with the trouble of the piece. I got shocks when I went to work and people saw the new hair cut :) One lady actually screamed, with what I assume was surprise lol. Hope you get some great and memorable reactions!!!

Welcome to the SBG Family rkymtnchi,

In your pic, you sort of remind me of the guy who plays in Prison Break. Looks Good. O0

Hey, Congrats, and welcome!  You made the right choice by banishing the piece.  That mop would've dominated your every waking moment and drug you down.  Terrific look!

Silly -- Zero
Sane -- 10,000,000,000,000.00

Good choice, bro.  You look great Sly.  I'm also newly Sly.  Although I never considered a piece, I did consider medication, transplants, and I had used Rogaine for years.  I'm so much happier now.

By the way, I kinda unveiled the new look to my extended group of friends on Saturday night.  I had so much confidence (after all the support on this forum) that it did not matter what anyone said.  Even though 99% loved it.  I love the look and they could tell.  One lady even said that she could see my confidence.  The best part was all of the ladies rubbing my head.  My wife didn't get jealous either cause she was excited to get me home and have it all to herself.

Enjoy the new look.  Walk with confidence because it looks great on you!

The 'system' sounds horrible.  I'm glad you found a better option.  The dome looks good.
Swimming with a sly head is AWESOME.  The cool water feels awesome on your head, it dries off fast; and you can fall asleep in it too.

Welcome to SBG's rkymtn, good to have you with us.

I am going to echo all the other sly bro's; what you've done is without a doubt the right choice.

I don't know how anyone would ever want to live with that feeling on their head all the time, and the constant worrying that must consume the wearer, that comes with it as well.

Don't you feel total freedom now?  It's great isn't it.  Enjoy!   O0

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback.  I've got a few good comments from the very few ladies at work - I'm  in IT...what can I say?  I'm about to head out on the town for the first time as a SLY guy...wish me luck!

I'm really digging my look as a buzzed bald - about a #0 or #1, better than as slick bald...does that still count me as sly?

Close enough to me  for you to be in the club... it's not just a look, but an attitude.
