Title: Affirmations.
Post by: buddha on February 22, 2009, 01:49:44 PM
What I am looking for here is little quotes or sayings that give you guys some peace and tranquility amongst all the chaos which is life here on earth.
One that I have found recently is as follows:
"Forgiveness is giving up all hope of having had a different past."
I don't know who said it originally but I read it in a book by Anne Lamott entitled "TRAVELLING MERCIES; Some Thoughts on Faith".
I would like to read some of the affirmations that my sly bros say to themselves to bring a little serenity to the daily grind.

Be still, and know that I am God - Psalm 46 v 10

my favourite one is "Time heals EVERYTHING"

some others I keep in mind  "Life is like an ice-cream cone, enjoy it before it melts"
"experience is the mother of wisdom"-----this one here I tell myself whenever I go through difficult times.
It's experience that makes a person stronger, more confident, more patient, etc.
There's also  "Verily with every hardship comes ease.  Verily, with every hardship comes ease."

I have a few but my favorite is simply "It could be worse". On my really bad days that I get now and then I always remind myself that it could be worse. When I got my nose broke a few days ago I thought it could be worse, I could have broken an arm. When I think like that it tends to make me feel better.

Like my friend Stephen, I also find comfort in the Psalms:

Psalm 40 Verse 2:

He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog,
And set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react.

My favorite "Life is not about failing but rising each time you fail"

"The only time you define your character is when you go without. In times of hardship, you find out what you're made of and what you're capable of."

If I'm starting to get uptight about something I'll remember a line from Bram Stoker's Dracula:  "Down that pathway lies madness indeed!".  This allows me to chill out and take a more objective view sometimes.

BTW:  The Buddha in your avitar.  Is that Siddartha or Amitabha?

I would have to say, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get" :)

Well that is one I like, but my favorite is:

Psalm 23:4 Yea, thou I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

Has brought me comfort in some rough times.

I have found comfort in some of the replies already listed.  Here is another that I like.  It is from Julian of Norwich who lived in the 14th and 15th Centuries.

"All will be well.  All will be well.  All manner of thing will be well."

One of my favourites is 'Footsteps in the Sand':

Footsteps In The Sand

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand:
one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him
he looked back, at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life
there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it:
"LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you'd walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life
there is only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."

The LORD replied:
"My son, My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you,
During your times of trial and suffering,
when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

"It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission"  That has gotten me through many should I or shouldn't I quandaries.

I really like that one, it really rings true.
The Buddha in my avatar is the Amida Buddha.

Here is another one of my favorites.

If you Think You Can, You Can!
You can be a total winner even if you're a beginner,
If you think you can, you can,
If you think you can, you can,
You can wear the gold medallion,
You can ride your own black stallion,
If you think you can, you can,
If you think you can, you can,

It's not your talent or the gift at birth,
It's not your bank book that determines worth,
And it isn't in the color of your skin,
It's your attitude that lets you win,
You can upset Connors or Austin,
Or win the marathon at Boston,
If you think you can, you can,
If you think you can, you can,

You can profit through inflation,
You can redirect this nation,
If you think you can, you can,
If you think you can, you can,

It doesn't matter if you've won before,
It makes no difference what's the half time score,
It's never over until the final gun,
So keep on trying and you'll find you've won,
You grab your dream and then believe it,
Go out and work and you'll achieve it,
If you think you can, you can,
If you think you can, you can!

 One of my favourites:  O0

You are not enclosed within your bodies, nor confined to houses or fields...that which is in you dwells above the mountain and roves with the wind...it is a thing free, a spirit that envelopes the earth and moves in the other.

Yeah, I keep telling my boss that.  ;D

Another of my favorites is from St. Francis of Assissi:

"Lord give me the strength to change that which I can, the serenity to accept that which I can't change, and the wisdom to know the difference."

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
