In high school I had a total mop that went way past my ears. I cut it off then my hairline started receding. Ha
-
I got my first haircut at 4 years of age....I guess that was as long as I ever had it.... O0
-
Yes. And yes, I have got a pic but you could not pay me enough to post it on here. I cringe every time I see it (which is often. My mum likes to bring it out to show me, usually when there are visitors in).
-
Oh yeah... Ihad the whole down over the neck thing...... for years.... WTF was I thinking???!!! :*))

You were thinkin that you looked cool. Just like us all buddy

That sounds like a mullet to me.
I had long hair past my shoulders in high school. Wore a ponytail sometimes. That was also when it was cool to have it shaved underneath up to above the ears. It was awful. For my 10 year reunion I was unanmously voted "most changed" even though I wasn't bald yet. People hardly recognized me.
-
We all change sooner or later especially 10 years after HS.
-
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh dang I wish i had some of my pictures scanned so I can post them. I had the mullet and all...LOL I have this group pic of my friends and I...lol I have got to get them scanned.

In 8th grade my hair used to come down to the middle of my back. It was thick and dark brown, and all the black girls loved to play with it; braiding it, whatever. I would always fall asleep in my science class, and my teacher hated it.
what could i do though? it felt so good. haha. b!n&
Then came wrestling, then came ROTC, then came the forehead that reached over my head and down my back.......
-
I had a mop load of hair till I was about nineteen, when it started getting shorter. I remember at school being shouted at by the science teacher because I wasnt listening, and saying 'have you got any brains uder all that hair?!'
Well- he couldnt say that now (I mean about the hair, not the brains! :D)
-
In my late 20s and early to mid-30s I had a full beard and lots of hair. It was never longer than my shoulders, but I do remember that the hair on my head was at times maybe four or five inches. Never actually measured it.
I liked it at the time, but now I am more than happy with the totally bald dome. 8)
-
I never had long hair. I wanted it and tried. Does an explosion in a Billo Pad mean anything? With the course and unruly curls, I was never able to wear my hair in the style of the day. Damn!
-
Like Tim, I wish I could scan some of my old pictures as well.
I pretty much had long hair throughout my life, in some shape or form. It's nice to see the new young actors on Disney, they have the same type of hair I had as a kid, and it's good to see, brings back memories.
If you checkout some of Robmeister's photo's from his days in the band, that's pretty much how I had mine during my twenties too. Those great heavy metal days!!
I believe I can scan on my printer, so I will have to get some pics from those days up here.

When I was 14 my hair was just a bit past my shoulders

Growing up in the '50's, my dad was a career military man, so I always had short hair.
All your posts are making me wonder if i missed out on something back in the '60's, so, wadda ya think? Should I grow a "Ben Franklin"??? ;D

I had very long hair, it went to the bottom of my back i went without a haircut from 1989 to 2004
-
When I was a little kid from maybe 4 until I was about 7 or so I had a mullet. After the mullet it was a bowl cut for a couple years and after that til now I think its called the ceaser, its only maybe 2" long. I will have to scan the pictures of me when I was younger in. I looked like such a little redneck, lol.

Wow !! what changed? did you start shaving from long hair; go short gradually; or did 'nature' dictate the change?
I had long , past shoulder-lenght hair from late high school through college and first two years of grad school. Then started cutting it a variety of lengths: over the ear, 'shor' (1/2 to one inch long on top). didn't get into flattops and buzzcuts till the mid 90s; ... then went longish for a while again (early 21st century). since about '05 I have been buzzed, and then; the long oddessy toward SLY which happened in the summer of '07. Will really have to hunt for photos; don't know if I have any from college days; maybe my Mom does ...
-
This is as long as it ever got for me. It wasn't considered long at the time, but it seems long compared to what I'm used to now. ;)

Yeah, had hair down to the shoulders and past the ears back in middle school (late 70's). Oh those were the days, mmmmmmm..... Dorothy Hamill, Poprocks and Coke killing kids, that new Bubblicious, the Waltons.... :'(
-
Back in High School I tried to grow my hair out but it wanted to fluffy, :*)) , and realized I didn't want that, and than after that it was pretty much high and tights sense...well until now :)

you kinda remind me of the kid from the movie "the shining" in this pic lol.
either that or the bully from "a christmas story" lol
-
I'll scan some in and post 'em. I had long hair down below my shoulders for ten years. It was all one length and naturally wavy. My wife always said my hair was prettier than hers! LOL
Then I had two kids, bought a minivan and well you know - the rest is history.
-
I had long curly hair that went way past my shoulders, use to woo the ladies with it.
-
I had the full on Nikki Sixx motley crue hair!! Blonde, Big, lots of hair spray!! So kind of a shock when it fell out!! :(
-
I have to confess that in the early '80s I had the "Luke Spencer" white man's afro with a Fu-Manchu. I wore it for a couple of years and when my hair was wet, it was down below my shoulder blades. When I decided to get rid of it, I ended up with a 1/2" buzzcut. It was the only way to get rid of all the permed hair. I never had hair longer than an inch from then until I went sly.
-
nature dictated the change, my hair started to recede, and then i shaved

I used to have an Afro, it was terrible, absolutely terrible.
-
The longest I had my hair was when I was about 17 or 18 when I decided to grow it long like a mate of mine who was a bit of a rocker. Grew it to my shoulders, but soon got fed up of it. Like I said earlier in the thread, by the age of 19/20 I was cutting it shorter and shorter. Had a m0ohawk for a few weeks or so, then number two and one grades, then zero, then SLY.
SLY is by far the best hairstyle I've EVER had 8)
-
While i was in high school, i was obsessed with the band koRn, i actually grew my hair long and had dreads for awhile, then i decided to go with the trend and cut my hair and get blonde high lights in it. So far i'm liking the sly look the best!
-
This is about my longest circa 1982...
Me and my bud of course sportin' twin tuxes....I of course was the one with the sweet feathered hair...
d@mn I was a cool cat! ;)

hey BA: great 1980's photo there! :D
It's amazing how really trendy looks seem so strange with hindsight! (like, would you wear those suits nowadays?!) I got some pretty similar shots, with thin ties and 'big hair' and shoulder pads 8) Ah: the 'good old days'!
-
I hear ya Rob...
I am happy to say...I was so cool...I knew mullets were horrible when they were every where...
I thought they were hideous...never had a mullet...ever....
I went from that cut to a very progressive for the time "short in the back and over the ears cut"...
very progressive for 83!
-
I thought they were hideous...never had a mullet...ever....
It ain't too late. You can try that next. >:D

As I was growing up, my police officer father HATED long hair. But eventually my stepmother convinced him into letting me grow my hair long. So in high school, I had what I called a "white man's afro". It wasn't permed, it was natural. So I used a pic to get it all "poofy". My post earlier about "High School Pictures" shows that look...: http://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/index.php?topic=9310.0
In the early 1990's I did sport the dreaded Mullet. I don't EVER remember it having a name at that time. But it did get below my collar and when I shook my head, my hair would hit me on the cheeks. At the same time, I pretty much always sported a full beard. It was just starting to turn grey on the chin, but everything else was a medium to dark brown. It was at this time that I noticed that not only the temples had receeded but now the middle was noticeably thinning. So after about a year and a half of the Mullet, I started getting crew cuts and buzzes. It was mostly that way until I went Sly.
-
Not only is my hair thinning, but it is thin and easily breaks. I know this because my little sister has the same kind of hair, and she has never been able to get it more than shoulder length. So I made it through the '80s without long hair.
-
At one time I had pretty long hair past my shoulders when wet. Unfortunately it was a Jew-Fro when it was dry (picture Seth Rogan), and I'm not Jewish. Well that didn't work for me so I shaved it into a mohawk (to thin it out so it could lay down, I have very thick, course hair) and I had kept it straightened. I only once or twice spiked said mohawk, but I sported the long hair for a few years until I realized one day that the hair combined with the fat chops I had at the time (because the ex-wife loved 'em), made me look like a pedophile, lol. After that I kept a nice tight fade with bangs past my eyes, rocker style. And NO MORE CHOPS (or wife).
p.s. I went to a club a couple years ago with my then GF and when i gave my DL to the girl at the door she said "Wow, you've made some improvements." Not really catching her meaning at first, I looked at my DL and saw one of the creepiest looking fellows. Long hair, fat chops and thick glasses. I "lost" that DL on purpose and got a new one the next day Ugh terrible. It was a source of amusement for my GF and her friends for weeks afterwards.
-
Yep, same here. I started growing it out when I was 12. Never got it cut until I was 22 or 23! I justs had to attend a banquet and they had asked for old pictures and the crowd had to guess who was who. I was the only one on the board that no one could notify.
Later on the speaker was talking about the kid with the really long hair and asked me to stand. Of course now it's shaved and glossy! Everyone had a great laugh at my expence!!!!
-
Sure did - I thought I was going for a rebellious goth look (yes with the all black clothes and silly pointy boots, never did the makeup thing though) I actually looked more like the lost member of Duran Duran. When I got picked up by the trani coat-check person in a club (don't worry a buddy helped me out) I decided it was time to give up the look.
-
Since around age 16, I've had it long more often than not. I am one of those guys with a full head of hair who shaves out of preference. It was long, dark brown, and curly. The ladies seem to like the long hair quite a bit but I was just so done with the grooming. My daily routine was mostly dreadlock prevention because all it wanted to do was knot up, no matter what conditioner I used.
It seems a fair number of women like the new look. so it's ok.
The wife doesn't like it, though...

Isn't it interesting that most of us had long hair before. I mean loooong. Most of the posters that replied at one time had shoulder length or longer hair. I wonder what you thought of bald people when you had the long hair? was it a "ill never be bald" thing?... anyhow... just rambling.

Good to see you back on the Forum again. Gotta ask, did you make the 30 day rule and are you still showing that great dome??? :/O :/O
-
Sadly no. I stopped posting cause I never ended up doing it. Fear got the best of me. But, I am back and things are looking up again. Last week I got a hnt with shaved sides and back. #1 top. If it all goes well, it will go from #1 to shaved next week. I realized that little step in between can be really helpful. I'm going to try my best to do those 30 days, but doubt I can make it. :-[

You can make it. You've got nothing to be afraid of. It's a crime to cover a dome like that with hair. Summer is here, it's the perfect time to shave it and be proud.
-
Thanks razor. I really want to be able to make myself shave those 30 days in a row... I feel that if I manage to do that I will be sly for a while.

I can remember feeling exactly the same way. Making the 30 days seemed like an impossibility and I had a few failed attempts along the way. I think I was a little afraid that if I did make it through the 30 days, that there would be no going back. Change can be scary.
I think it's important to do it, though -- not because you want to have a shaved head necessarily, but because it's always empowering and liberating when you succeed at something you didn't think you could do.
If you find yourself wavering, visit this site. We'll help keep you onboard during your trial period. And trust me, you'll be glad you did it.

Don't beat yourself up about this, it's supposed to be liberating not threatening. The good news take away is that you've got the "itch" and I know someday you're going to scratch it, and I, and all the other guys here can tell you, YOU'RE GOING TO LOOK GOOD and FEEL GOOD TOO. Keep showing up, that's what the place is about. O0

Well, it happened, totally unexpected but I knew it was then or never. I did it. 6 months after joining the board. So wow. That's all I have to say for now.
Day 0. we're good.
It's all about tomorrow. We'll see.
I feel like I need a sponsor for the next 30 days.

thanks saintc and razorx btw for the encouragement. I bet you didn't think I would do it so soon. yeah!!!! O0

In high school I had mega long hair. Hey it was the 80's/90's. I still have sort of a phantom feeling sometimes like I can still feel the long hair. I've talked to quite a few people from high school on facebook and they are like wow what happened to your hair? lol

I had shoulder length hair back in the day but don't believe I have any pictures of myself hanging around. I was your average hiippy type guy back in the late 60s.

shoulder length in the 70's. Different look there Xanax!
