Title: a professor of mine questioned me for shaving my head today.
Post by: Ghost1988 on February 09, 2009, 05:34:13 PM
unprofessional and innapropriate or just making conversation? you be the judge.

i was in a rather small class today (maybe 13 people or so), and i have this older woman in her 60's as a professor. she was taking class attendance and when she got to me she was like "alex why do you shave your head? you like that look?" i just said "yeah" because i was shocked she would ask me such a question in front of the entire class. it was kind of awkward. i felt like i should have told her the real reason i shave my head, but then again its none of her business and i think it was a rude question to ask to begin with. it seemed like she was asking me in a negative way like she dissaproved of it.

do you guys think that was an innapropriate question? if so would you have gotten offended?

I would have been offended.  She was definitely out of line.  But she still is the one who gives you your grade.  It's a tough place to be.

In front of the rest of the class and a class that you are PAYING FOR?   Darn right it was inappropriate and unprofessional.  I can not imagine that question being asked by a professor that you don't know.  I am curious as to her tone of voice when she asked that question too.  BTW, what course was it?

it was a "digital imaging" class. and her tone was kinda snooty like she didnt like my head and was kinda mocking it. the weird thing is, this was the 6th class. not the 1st, so why would she just bring it up now? was she holding that rude comment in the whole time and just couldnt stand it anymore so she had to say something? the reason it was awkward was because theres a lot of good lookin girls in that class and thats just not something you randomly say to someone. thats personal. its like saying to me, "why are you so pale? dont you go outside?". it was embarassing.

she might as well just told me i was balding lol.

Too bad the question caught you off guard otherwise you could have responded by asking her why she chose her particular hairstyle and if she really liked that look.   >:D

haha i know right. shes the most BORING old lady ever too! lol. so im over it. it bugged for for like 15 minutes then i brushed it off cuz i realized shes prolly old fashioned and the whole "shaved head" look doesnt look good in her opinion. like i said shes probably about 65. ive had these reactions quite a few times from that age group actually. it has to do with what was "in" when they were growing up. shaving your head has just been a trend recently. they havent caught on yet lol.

Yes it is inappropriate and unprofessional.

The best response is to be a great student with outstanding work.

That's the kind of thing that breaks down stereotypes.

My grandmother said something similar to me right after I shaved my head... "Why did you do that!?!?"

I havn't had a professor ask any anything like that, but I think I would probably respond by smiling and saying "I love it!"

I'll give you a piece of advice that I have found to be valuable. Never feel the need to explain yourself. You are in control of your life, you make your own decisions.. therefore the only person you have to answer to is yourself. If someone asks you why you shave your head... i think "because I like it" is a perfectly acceptable answer. You don't have to go into the exact reasons why you shave your head.

I personally think you look pimp with a shaved head. I'm sure a lot of beautiful women feel the same way. =]

When I was in college getting my 2nd degree (~26 y/o at the time) one of the profs was lecturing next to me.  He looked down at my head and said "Hmmm... you're going bald!" right in front of the class!! Which naturally caused an uproar of laughter.  >:(  I would have raised hell except I knew the prof was a jerk like this and so this was in line with his personality.  It still hurt though.   :'(  So yah I feel your pain.  :-\

Best advice on this whole forum! :)  I wish someone would have told me that back when I was in school.  Would have saved me a lot of grief.

Unprofessional and innappropriate. I am surprised at a professor being so openly judgemental in these times of diversity. If she had felt the need to say something it should have been in a 1-1. And even then I am not sure if it would be acceptable.  >:(

I think it was inappropriate, and you may want to speak to her alone on it. After your grade, of course lol.

Unfortunately, some of the smartest people can also be the most ignorant.
I also believe that people of her age group have a skewed view of the shaved head anyway.
Remember, that generation did have the pompadour, and most of the combover guys fall into that category as well.

Inconceivable.  very in appropriate, to say the least.  As a former professor, I can't imagine commenting on someone's appearance in front of a whole class.  It's one of those things that 'just isn't done.'   You could be a real #$%#&  about it and complain to a Dean.  They will be shaking in their boots imagining your harassment law suit; and for sure, at the  VERY LEAST, she would be called into a meeting with the dean to explain her actions.  I would be very embarrasing and troublesome for her, and she'd think twice about doing somehting like this again.   For that alone, you should do it.   But then again, if you are over it, just let it go; get through the class and hope you don't have to take another with her.

You're on track for not letting it get to you.  When I was in college, it seemed like some of the professors loved lording their power over the students.  Especially the old ladies.  She just asked you that because she knows she could be rude with no consequences because you know your grade is on the line.  But, what do you care?  It's not like she's some hottie that you wanted to date.  ;D

The question was inappropriate because you were forced to say that you have a receding hairline. So you are hiding your mpb by shaving. I thinck the real sly attitude is not be bothered that you have mpb! With that attitude no question is inappropriate.

I agree that in reallity you should not make any big deal about it.  I was just thinking about what you COULD do; and believe me, with the attitudes of so many college administrators (deans can truly be the most silly people on the face of the earth) , I know that you could have a lot of people really sqirming if you wanted to ; esp. the prof.   But;  as a true sly guy; I know that you will let it go.  But if you wanted to , you could have that prof. spending soooo much of her free time in meetings explaining herself (of course; you'd probably have to attend some of the meetings too ; so; again; it's really not worth the bother.)

On another note; why all the dissing of older female professors?  As a group; I don't think they're any worse (or better) than any other.    if anything, it's YOUNG female profs you have to watch out for.  Academe is still rather a man's world and they really have to proove themselves; and so can be very uptight . . . .

Dude, she was totally out of line.  Imagine her shock and chagrin if you had started to undergo chemo therapy?  People need to really be careful on their statements.
Maybe you could have resoponded:  "Why, is the shine hurting your eyes?" Or maybe, "Is my slyness stirring old, forgotten passions?"  Lol.  Blow it off, but if it continues I would  take it to mast and talk to a Dean.

I can agree with some of that John.  It seems like some lady instructors feel it necessary to over-do it, and act tougher than your average teacher, thinking students will not take advantage of them.  Whether it's the right tactic or not, I don't know.

1) If she asked then it isn't apparent why you shave it.

2) I've had a professor say something, but not rude like that.

3) Professors are paid to pretend like they know everything about a particular subject.  For many, this leads to them thinking they are smarter than everyone and better than their students.  Best not to take it personally.

4) You should have a few funny explanations lined up.  Like "don't go to my barber"   "I never have a bad hairday"  "the babes like it" a few ones like that.

There's multiple ways to go about it.  You can be completely honest, give a witty remark, or just raise a brow and stare at them.  No situation will be the same, so just go with what you feel.  When I go the honest route, I just say "I got tired of losing my hair, and like the look better than balding".  But that's usually best when you're talking with friends you haven't seen in a while.  When it's a stranger, it's fun to make them feel awkward (it was THEM, however, who put YOU on the spot).  Just turn your head, get a mean look on your face, almost ready to pummel them, then start rubbing your dome... then eventually get an orgasmic look on your face, and keep rubbing..  Ok, i've never done that, but if anyone tries it, let me know if you get arrested.

We all obviously have reasons for shaving our head, so it doesn't really give strangers the right to be questioning us... but i guess we all question what we don't understand.  Some people are genuine about it, and truly want to know - others just do it for douchebag reasons.

Lol I didn't think of that situation. I'm on spring break right now (shaved yesterday) so when I go back to school I'll be prepared with an extra witty response if needed. She was off course in that comment, good that you let it roll off. I personally have been described as having an over the top personality so I don't think my sudden decision to scrape my dome will be a huge surprise to anyone at school.

I think in the long run situations ike these make you get comfortable with a bald head. Someone who has been bald for 10 years probably wouldn't even have noticed the remark.

She probably would feel beter if you styled a comb-over because it was the thing in her days.

I would take that in a positive way... you shave your head cos of MPB right... well she obviously doesn't realise this and 100% thinks it just a statement... thats great isn't it??? And perhaps the rest of the class think the same thing, to me thats a bonus, if anything she has just accentuated your confidence by pointing out that you CHOSE that look! One way or another she noticed you, due to your bold (not bald) hairstyle... did she notice anyone else in the class? Rock on! Just my opinion
