Title: No shaving allowed
Post by: Nonick on January 13, 2009, 09:32:07 PM
Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who can't shave?  I'm not talking about running with sharp objects and laughing hysterically.   :/O  I'm talking about no shaving, because if I nick myself it could mean a trip to the Emergency Room or worse.  :XX  Should I just stick with a lame electric that will never bite, or are there other choices to consider?   @n(

Whats the deal?  Do you have Von Willebrands? Christmas Def? Hemophillia??  Or ar you on serious blood thinners like coumadin, lovenox, or plavix??    WE  Need more info to advise you wisely.  There ARE other options.

hey nonick:  welcome 2 the sly fraternity.  glad that ya joined us.  if U want your dome hair-free... other than a manual razor shave, the only thing i can think of is an electric razor or a clipper buzz.  laser treatments is another option but it is expensive.  hope this helps.  keep us posted 2 your road 2 slyness.

one other thing... i have several patients who R on "blood thinner" meds (coumadin, plavix) and that doesn't stop them from shaving.  if U cut yourself... use added pressure with a cold wash cloth 2 stop the bleeding or a styptic pen.

Ringside, yeah, I'm on thinners.  I'm just getting off lovenox (ouch) and my coumadin level is still leveling.  I say "just", because I was off for a couple of days and my INR level dropped, so I had to start up again for a couple of days.

Warhawk, many thanks!!! I think (hope) you nailed it on the treatment.  Also, I guess I'll have to be a lot more careful and make sure I keep a fairly fresh blade.  It's the dull ones that cut you, right?  ;)

Welcome, also suggest a razor like Fusion that doesn't seem to be as touchy regarding nicks, and avoid against the grain until you get a month or two into it for experience and some scalp "toughening."

Welcome nonick.  Warhawk DID nail it for you.  I am also on Coumadin and the remedy he mentioned is exactly what I have done when I received a nick.   I do not let it stop me from getting my daily slick and smooth shave.

Here is another trick if you have a bleeder that wont stop with Warhawks methods;  take a tea bag and dunk it in cold water, then put it on the cut,  The tannin will stop most recalcitrant bleeds.  (This also works great for bleeding from recently extracted teeth.)  Take it from an old time doc who has been around the block too many times!  Nonick, keep that INR in the therapeutic window and good luck!

You could also have a styptic pen on hand.  This should help stop the bleeding, but check with your doctor.

There are hair removal creams like Magic, made for black men.  Do not use them under any circumstances if you're not black.  Trust me, that stuff burns!   :(
