Title: New here, new to shaving my head
Post by: BrianR on January 13, 2009, 01:34:19 PM
Hello all! I just stumbled across this forum and decided to join.

I've been struggling with a receding hairline for 2-3 years now, I am about to turn 23. I suppose my hairline isnt all that bad but it seems worse to me than it really is at times and I feel like people stare at it. My girlfriend has been very supportive and has been encouraging me to shave my head for the past year and a half. I kept my hair at pretty short anyways but new years day I finally decided to shave it so I grabbed my clippers and buzzed it down to stubble. I have been keeping it like this because I kind of like the "shadow" look, so I have just been trimming it down again with the clippers every few days. I go back and forth on whether or not I like this look or not, but I figure ultimately I have no choice and I might as well get used to it now. I do like how easy and care free having a shaved head is though.

Hey Brian, welcome to the forum. I like the stubble look on myself as well. I still shave it but not nearly as much as I did during the hot summer. I like using a no cut clipper without a guard just about every other day, 3 days max.

What do you mean by a no cut clipper?

Some clippers when pressed against the scull have the ability to tear out a nice chunk if not careful. I use a clipper that I can put pressure on against my noggin and it won't cut me. Rounded ends I guess. It's nothing fancy but since my clipper incident of '05 I'm very careful about what kind of clipper touches my dome.

I often use the edger on the end of my braun electric razor. I can buzz my head and face without a mirror and have never cut myself with it. Try that with a $20 pair of shears from K-Mart.

I figured thats what you meant but wasnt 100% sure. I have some wahl designer clippers that I bought a couple years ago and I press pretty hard and having had any knicks yet. The other day I used my little battery powered wahl peanut trimmer and it got a little closer than the clippers, I got some razor burn on the nape of my neck though.

Welcome Brian.  You're at the right place.

Thanks. This seems like a great place. None of my friends can really relate/understand what I am going through. I have felt more confident since shaving my head and my girlfriend has been super supportive so that has been a big help.

How could she not? It's a great look and she gets a guy with more confidence. Win-win for the both of you.

Cool.
You're looking at another supportive girlfriend <----- in my picture.  It's nice to have the support of the ones you love.

You took a big step by shaving it down to stubble.  You'll get used to it, and soon enough will probably go the sly route.
And as far as people staring at your hairline - they will if your nervous about it.  But confidence will throw that trivial trash out the window.
Take care.

The hairline thing isnt noticeable now since its so short, but when I kept it at a #4 it felt like everyone was staring. I wish I would have done this sooner.

I have been thinking about going to the next step and actually shaving it with my mach 3 but that intimidates me a little for some odd reason.

i have the same hairline prob as you. i dont have the horshoe baldness but i have a VERY thin hairline. its basically just a little strip that comes down the middle of my forehead. anyways....just shave your head smooth if it bugs you and no one will notice as much as if you just buzz it. especially in the sun.

Now that its buzzed down it doesnt bother me. Thank you for the advice though.

So I just decided to shave my head with my norelco electric razor, the kind with 3 flexible rotation heads, and it came out pretty well. Is there any problem with this method? It seems quicker and easier than using a mach 3 or headblade.

Mach 3 is fun and quite honestly the whole routine is kinda cool. Don't be surprised to find that shaving your head can be an enjoyable experience.

Even though electric is working for you like it does some others, ya gotta try the blade at least once.

Ill probably let it grow out a little and then shave with the mach 3. I like it even better now that I have taken it to the skin with the electric razor, so I think I am going to start shaving it to the skin regularly with a real razor. I decided to just do it with the electric one because I didnt have any shaving cream or anything and I didnt feel like running out lol.

Welcome Brian. You are deffo in the right place.

Might I make a suggestion? When you decide to go for it and shave the old noggin, treat that as YOUR time. When I shave mine, that is my pamper time and it has become an enjoyable experience. Only problem is that Madam Ambassador says I am spending longer getting ready than she does!  :Xo!

Hey Brian, welcome to SBG's. I like the stubble look myself, and I usually alternate with smooth and stubble, much more often now that it's colder like Cheese had mentioned.

Keep it however you like it, and what you feel most comfortable with.   O0

Well said Papa Don  O0   Since I got the bald guyz pre-shave scrub I am "able" to shave my head in 20 minutes BUT BUT BUT.............yesterday I had a shave and I thought you know what this is the time I have to myself so why don't I take an hour instead?  So I did that patiently.  It took me an hour to shave & I did that on purpose, I was even singing while shaving.  It's great!!!

Brian ~  Glad you tried the blade.  I went w/ electric for awhile early on, but never felt that it did as well as a blade.  The feeling a smooth, slick, SLY melon is so addicting that nothing (for me) will deliver the satisfaction like a blade shave.  Let's see a pic!
