Title: Moustaches are back
Post by: Razor X on December 26, 2008, 06:57:00 PM
It had to happen sooner or later:

It wouldn't be the first time that I'm wrong, but I don't believe the moustache will ever truly be "back" again.

Everything comes back sooner or later.  What remains to be seen is if they remain "back" or if it's just a fad.

Jack White of the White Stripes and Brandon Flowers from the Killers reintroduced the stache to the young hipster types about 2 years ago..

it's already 2 years into the "too hip crowd"... saw a lot of dweebs with them here in Portland last summer...

it looks ridiculous on any dude under 30...it looks like a costume!

Guess the trend hasn't worked its way east yet.

For Christmas I went through a lot of old photographs to put together a photo book to give to my siblings of photos from the early 1950's to the present.

I've had facial fur of some type since I was 16. During my twenties, I sported just the stache. Looking at the photographs really made me cringe. The younger me with just the stache looked so, well, gay.

And yeah, I am gay, but geez, I looked like such a Castro clone!

I don't believe the 'stache has ever lost it's coolness.  I mean if I wanted to look like every other bald faced man, I would have shaved mine off long ago... ;D

:/O Call me crazy, but to me, it's all about the 'stache... O0

phuzz, your stache can hardly be called typical, and could never be called uncool!

Agreed.  Phuzz - your's is much more than a your average moustache and will always be cool.

My fear is that goats will become dated - I'd hate to have to give mine up now that I'm sly. What would I do with my comb?   *!d

Oh yeh!!!! You have to have a stache.  As far as facial hair, it is all that I can grow well.  Tried the beard, goat etc.  Not enough there.  However I really like Phuzz's Stache, and would compliment him through immatation.  I just don't have the fortitude to last long enough to get it there.

HAHA that was said about the mullet, and scullet though. I would have to say the goat won't turn to an evil side like the mullet did. I think you're good to go with a classic goat.
with my friends i usually try out the facial fur thing. during december and january its just winter beards, february is facial hair february( anything goes) then march is moustache march, april is usually very quickly "all gone april" by that time we're sick of it lol
Cheers.

Mullets -- and scullets in particular -- were never cool.

As far as moustaches, beards, goatees etc. coming and going out of fashion, I think a lot of that just depends on your age.   The next generation of twenty-somethings may decide that something is "out" but the look will survive with those of us who are a little older.  In fact, we run the risk of looking ridiculous if we try too hard to imitate what the younger guys are doing.

Yeah - the "3-day-growth" look is great for GQ.  On me, I just look homeless!

The 3-day-growth look only works if you have got dark hair.  On redheads or blonds, it looks dirty and scruffy.

When the grey starts to become apparent, a "3-Day" puts a guy in a mutton dressed as lamb catagory.  A moustache or goat becomes an issue too, until the grey predominates and it's a decent shade of grey, not slush grey.  So, for a lot of us, after the mid-40's it can be iffy to try the "GQ" three day look.  It also looks better on guys who have dark hair, rather than the pale skin that predominates guys w/ light colored or red hair.

I would have to say that almost any facial hair style, as long as it is cared for looks great on men. we were born to sport them. if i didn't have facial hair to play and experiement with I'd be bored with this life a while ago.
Next time i grow my stache' out I'll post a pic i usually look hilarious but have yet to be sly with one. so we shall have to see.
cheers,
J.

I had a female co-worker once ask me why men grew facial hair.  Cutting to the chase, I asked in return, "Why do women wear makeup or go to the hair salon every week?"

Many men wear facial hair simply because they hate to shave.  I personally think that it's perfectly natural for a man to want a 'stache, beard, or both.  It has nothing to do w/ hiding ones face and everything to do w/ feeling good about your looks.

Vamp, I know plenty of women that love the 'tickle'...  :D

In all fairness I known women on both sides of this issue. My wife just likes not only me but guys in general with at least a mustache.

But one thing is for sure if you try to live your life or dress according to someone else's opinion you can drive yourself crazy. Stand in a room with 30 different people and you will get 30 different opinions. The one that really matters is the one you have of yourself. So if a woman likes me with a goatee...fine. If not....I'm not going to loose any sleep over it.

And yes..my wife LOVESSSS that "tickle" O0

Says the person with a faceless avatar.

The only people's opinions that matter to me are mine and my partner's. I haven't been clean-shaven since I was 16 and it will never happen.

Hello, yes do what you like, but if you were single you might get more dates if clean shaved.
Actually, you are quite mistaken. You know nothing of any circles other than your own. I can assure you that when I was single, I had no problems getting dates.

In fact, had I been clean-shaven, I would have had a hard time attracting the type of person I wanted to date.

Please don't state your own opinion as if it were fact. You can only speak for yourself.

In my expirience it's usually more dominant women who dislike moustaches, maybe because it's the one thing a man can grow that (most ;)) women can't.  All the women who hated my moustach were the bossy over-bearing types, whereas the feminine women seemed to like it.

But it's all just a matter of opinion 8)

It's amazing how much attitudes have changed towards facial hair in the past 10-15 years.  For reasons I've never understood, it used to be really frowned upon, especially in the corporate world.  If one had to have facial hair, a moustache was considered acceptable, though clean-shaven was preferred.  Nowadays beards and goatees are common even on corporate-types and when you're just out in public, there's a far greater percentage of guys sporting some kind of facial hair than there was in the past.

Er...that's not what I said: only that dominant women and more 'butch' women tend to feel threatened by moustaches :/O

I have had a moustache since I was 14 (23 years) and shaved it off a couple months back.  Probably grow it again when I want a change.  Er...yes, it IS a 'man thing' cos not many women I know can grow one themselves. :D

By the way, most women I know liked my moustache and would rather I grow it back 8)

Shes right.  What attractive woman in her right mind would be seen with a BALD guy with of all things facial hair ?!? I mean is there anyone in the world whos attracted to THAT ?  If a guy who looks like that finds a baby gorilla that would be attracted to him he should consider himself blessed.
Thanks for being honest Vampire, your intuition on these matters is unparalleled.   O0
