I figured in addition to providing my thoughts generally for people considering shaving, wondering what it would feel like soon after it - i thought it might prove useful to younger members or people thinking about shaving what its like within an environment where its not as common
Well today i decided it was time to go ahead with what i'd been contemplating doing for a while, having lost enough of my hair to bother me about my appearance, it was time for me to try what seems to work for you guys so well.
I decided that i would shave when i was ready, and it seemed today was that day. I was interested to see what the 'shadow' would look like, as i figured that would determine whether or not i liked the look. I have mixed feelings about it, but i imagine the paleness will disappear and over time i doubt the shadow will be as noticeable to me as it is now. I am in my early 20's, and i live on a university campus with people of my age who are not balding and not sporting shaved heads. The only people i've seen today are the people i live with and a couple of friends, and it seemed to generate some reactions and surprisingly non-reactions. A few didn't even notice i had done it, which was surprising to me given i'd thought about it a lot. I share the sentiment with others that you realise you're not the centre of the universe. The rest had said that they thought it 'worked' and that they got used to it quickly. A particular female friend of mine (i only mention gender for obvious reasons) also said she liked it, which from her pleased me O0.
Anyway, its been very strange looking in the mirror as i'm not used to the sight at all, but my feelings towards it seem to fluctuate between not being sure about it and liking it, which i suppose is generally leaning towards good. I hope that my feeling towards it gets better, as it would be good to end a process that i'm sure others would agree is unpleasant.
I will be going to classes this week, so i suppose i'll get the initial reactions over with and see where i go with it. Hope this proves useful to someone young who is losing their hair and wondering if shaving is the solution.
For now it seems i will be keeping it sly with the rest of you. Thanks for reading

It's normal to feel that way in the beginning. With time you'll get used to seeing that bald image in the mirror and your confidence will increase.
Congratulations on taking that first important step. O0 Remember shave every day for the next 30 days. After that, you'll be a "lifer". ;)

fly,
Congratulations on your decision to go for it. Your reactions are normal, but I'm guessing you'll love it more as time goes by. Naturally, you can always grow it back, but give it 30 days ...

took me 1 year or so to get used to it. hang in there.

Fly,
Most of us know what you are going through. Although I'm good bit older and have been sly for just 5 months, I still have some doubts. By now most of my close friends and relatives have seen me sly. Many have made very positive comments, but some have been indifferent. I work at a small college where few of the traditional age students have chosen the sly side and only one other employee (who happens to be in my office) are sly. I have had inquiries from other colleagues which lead me to think that they would like to be sly. One I encouraged to try over a vacation.
The important thing is that you like being sly. No one else matters.

Maybe I'm stupid or just incredibly vain, but even after 14 months, every once in a while I catch a view in a mirror or in a window, and all I can think is, "Damn that looks good!" ;D ;D ;D It's just my reaction.

Nothing vain. I've been sly for over six years or so and regularly find myself noticing my sly look/profile against windows and the like. ;D

The first day I shaved my head it sure felt strange but really great. I still am surprised I did the deed. Sometimes I find myself looking at a reflection in a shop window or elsewhere and thinking how pleased I am with the result. Still not sure I will have it as a permaent look but it will sure feature strongly.

Fly, I've been Sly for two months and I like it and I'm not vain but I do have to stare at myself in the mirror or any other reflective surface, simply to marvel at what I did. Whether you have a full head of hair(like I did)or it's in the process of disappearing, taking it all off is a radical move, since people with hair(men or women)comprise the majority of the population. Even though the SLY look isn't as rare as it once was, it does make people notice you. Enjoy the attention but be cool about it. That makes you cooler.

I really do not get that many looks but Im still amazed how I look when I see myself in a full-view mirror.

I don't think it's vain to think you are nice looking sly. I call it self confidence. Nothing wrong with that.
