Title: What was your "real" job after college?
Post by: Mr. Wilson on November 25, 2008, 03:17:34 AM
I'm still in school and I don't make much money at my current job.  After I get my degree, I feel that I must get a real job so that I can make much more money.  The problem is, I have no idea what I want to do!!  Heck, I don't really even like the marketing degree that I'm getting (I just chose a major, had no idea what I wanted to do).  So, what was your first real job after you got your degree?

When I finished college, I had no idea what I wanted to do, so I took a sales and marketing job for an IT firm, I made some O.K money but I hated it!!

While you are young you can do what you want just to make some money, but nothing will make you feel better that having a direction in life, I was miserable in my job because I had no idea what I wanted to do. But now I know what I want to do and I am taking steps to do it (Paramedic if your wondering). Having a light at the end of the tunnel will make everything seem brighter my friend!!

I started working at a small Engineering company that built power switch gear for large ships.
It was still one of my coolest jobs and I got to do a lot of things that most 20 year olds would never get the opportunity to experience hands on.

My first job out of school was a pharmacist.  It took me seven years to get that degree and there is no way I would ever go back to school.  I've worked for the same company since I graduated (going on six years now).  I'm thankful to be on a career path that is rewarding both personally and financially.

Chemical engineer (my degree).  I work as a process engineer for a company that makes rocket propulsion systems for space and defense.  This was my first "real" job after college, which I'm still working after 4+ years.

When I was in 8th grade, someone told me I sould be a chemical engineer.  I said ok, and here I am.  I love my job, but at times I've wanted to do something more creative.  I also recently started a business renting camera lenses online.

In another life I'd like to teach, either high school chemistry, calculus, or trig, or maybe something at the college level, although I'm not keen on the research side of being a professor.

Good luck man!  You've chosen an excellent field with low pay, poor benefits, and long stressful hours.  But at the end of the day, you feel good about the people you've helped and that makes it worth it.

J/K about the pay and stuff. ^-^
