so how 'bout it? any serious gigging musicians here? what do you do?
I've been playing guitar/singing for 9 years, and gigging for 8. played my first bar at 16. Blues, classic rock, and funk have been my staple. I haven't had a regular job for 7 years. The life of a starving artist suits me pretty well! There's been really good times and really bad times, but i'm a better man/musician for it. i've been fronting my own 3 piece groups for years, and i also freelance guitar for any type of band (except punk) or act that may need it if i'm available. anything to keep playing and make enough money to eat and pay the bills! once i started shaving my head alot of people that knew me from the bar circuit didn't hardly recognize me anymore, and many were very shocked!

Lefty, I'll have to PM you. I went to school for audio production, and record whenever i get the chance.

i have a few friends that went to school for audio production too. seems like it would be fun! i run sound for live bands at local clubs/bars when i'm not gigging. the only other stuff i know about recording has come from being in the studio

I'm a percussionist and singer. I currently play in the bands Circled By Hounds and The Galvanized Junk Band in Portland, OR. I play a minimum of 3 shows per month and usually more than that.
CBH is my primary band and we play traditional and original Irish folk rock. While GJB plays stomp, rag, holler and country blues on home made and junk instruments.
I've been playing the Bodhran (Irish frame drum) since I was 9 (25 years). I added Snare, Djembe and Congas in high school and then Bones, Spoons, Washboard, Cajon and junk percussion in the years since then.
I've played as a full member of 6 bands from 1997 - current. I've been lucky enough to perform on stage with international recording artists Solas, Karan Casey, Susan McKeown, Hanz Aarki, Casey Neil and even The Cheiftains. I've played on over a dozen albums, 4 of which were with bands that I founded.
I also teach lessons and workshops in the Portland area and at music festivals wherever my band gets booked.
FUN FACT: While I play field snare and tabor pretty well, I cannot play a full drum kit to save my life.

C-o-o-l.....I too studied audio production back in '90 - '91 at a place called Trebas Institute in Hollywood, CA. Was able to land an intern gig at the same studio we had recorded our album 5 years earlier.
Been playing the drums for 34 years now. Had some decent success in the '80s. More on that here: http://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/index.php?topic=3842.0
We recently re-released our "album" of 1986 on Retrospect Records. It was originally released on VINYL and cassette.....right before CD's were catching on.

We're presently slated to reunite for playing at the July 2009 Retro Big Hair festival, Rocklahoma in Pryor, OK. http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2008/03/04/rocklahoma-announces-line-up-featuring-bret-michaels-kix-warrant/
I've been "gigging" mainly in various church worship bands over the past 15 years....not having my own kit for as many years.
Just got a new kit a few weeks ago:

so I'm knockin' off the rust and honing the chops.
(forgive the sound quality....and forgive the hair growth.....winters are cold in Denver....need the added insulation).

Makes me want to dig out my guitar...... plus the OK gig looks awesome. I was a big black and blue fan one their first 2 releases. Wish I could be there!!

I play piano/keyboards. This year I started playing bass. I've always played in churches and the like, except for a few small gigs with my wife who sings and plays the piano and a little guitar. Back in college our band toured a lot playing at church type functions. We got up to about 2 gigs a weekend all over the state.
Now we just play in band for the Sunday morning service.
I want to learn the cello next. My favorite music is piano rock, and I think some of the lower string sounds can really make songs sound great.
My wife and I want to do some recording. Gotta get some material ready first.

It will soon be 40 years since I picked up my first pair of drum sticks. Our first paying gig was 1969 or 1970. I've played just about everything except Jazz (love it but can't play it very well). I've been playing Sunday AM and PM services at our church for the last 15 years. Haven't missed too many weekends since I first stared playing.

glad to see some other musicians on here! i have a blues/funk power trio under my own name(guitar/vox), and i play lead guitar/backup vox in a classic rock/blues cover band. zeppelin, hendrix, srv, the doors, albert king, buddy guy, clapton. some of my all time favs! aside from these two main acts i play guitar for anyone who needs a guitar player. i have a national resonator that i play blues with local acoustic blues artists, and i play acoustic with some duo's when they need another player. i'm sort of a guitar whore, i'll do it with anybody! i love guitars so much i build all my own (aside from the resonators). and i modified my flying v that is in my avatar. i also build/modify guitar pedals, amplifiers and anything electrical. my old man (an electrical technician/computer wiz) taught me about electronics as a little kid. boy do i owe him for teaching me how electricity works!!
keep rockin', sly fellas!

Unfortonatly im not gigging yet... I am a guitarist that has terrible luck with bands, every band i join falls through not due to the lack of motivation on my part but everyone else... i know im not the best out there but i truley enjoy playing the instrument and can play what I know very well. I know Stella (my les paul) is screaming to be played live but she hasent had the chacne to debut herself yet. hopefully i can stand in a few songs in my mothers classic rock band, and play some AC/DC and Almond Bros. but id prefer it if they'd let me play some mid '90s ska

Substitute church organist.
I record silly songs with my computer and synth. I have a guitar I can play basic chords on. Instruments I have given up on include trumpet, violin, and viola. And years ago, I was a substitute keyboard bass player for a friend's jazz band. I have no idea where I learned how to do that.

i rap a little bit but im not that great. im good for a whiteboy though lol. you can check me and my buddies page out if you want.

im on "suicide note" and im the first verse in "wally woo"

I'm kind of along the lines of SlyHigh and (l8-)
I play piano, keyboard and organ. I play keyboard with the praise band at church and substitute on the pipes when the organist is out of town. I'm the only other member of the church that know how to play the organ(or admits it at least) Actually I will be playing on February 15 at our church. If you're near Griffin GA in February come on by!
