Title: When did cool, sly guy Ed Harris....
Post by: BALDANDRE on November 04, 2008, 01:51:42 PM
become Captain Stubing from the LoveBoat?!?

Geez...seems the "cool Hollywood" move is to go back to the 70's horseshoe bald look...

looks like him and Billy Zane share the same barber these days...

only thing Ed is missing is the 70's stache...

Awful!

 O0NOT!

I don't know dudes?  I think it all goes back to confidence.  I think Ed Harris rocks the thinning hair pretty good.  Just like Gene Hackman or Jack Nicholson.  They all can act the heck out of some scenes and I don't even notice their hair most the time.

Ok, ok.  Maybe not necessarily, "rocks the thinning look" was a good way to put it.  ;D  Maybe I should have said, "wears it proudly."  To each his own dude.  I think it all comes down to being confident or not.  I mean, there are a lot of people out there who think we look silly for shaving our heads.  There are people out there that think that we have the problem.  Like we can't just be happy with ourselves the way we are and that's why we have to shave.  Sometimes the way I look at it is that the guys with thinning hair that don't shave have more confidence than we do.  Because they don't let what others think about their hair thinning bother them.  They are going to ROCK what they were given no matter what.  I think a few people made some good points on this subject in another thread.  I think it was called something like "should balding men shave their heads."  I don't know guys?  I'm not trying to make an issue out of it here.  I mean, the last thing I want to do is start a fuss between Sly Bros about it being cool for some guys NOT to shave their heads.  It just seems like a few of us are starting to almost attack people because they are basically happy the way they are.  We speak out if people attack us for wanting to shave our heads for the different reasons we do.  So who are we to say others are sad for not doing like we do?

...and nobody rocks the thinning look?

There was an editorial in the recent GQ that I just picked up at the airport. It highlights men who are balding but decide to keep the "power donut". It was okay except that it blasted us sly guys for shaving because it has become mainstream and everyone does it  :Xo!

They show off President Ford, Harris, and I think Terry Bradshaw. Then they have the nerve to make pokes at Chiklis and Howie Mandel. I still like the mag as my go to business trip read, but I was not happy until I got to the part about movie hotties.

Andre, dude.  It's all good man.  Everyone is entitled to their opinion.  You made your point and I made mine.  Why do you say, "Your time here is over."  To that I say, "WTF?"  I think you took my response the wrong way.  I wasn't saying anything about how being sly isn't the ultimate in my book.  I love shaving my head and I think the sly look is the best way to go.  But it's the negative remarks you were making about some people that chose to keep their thinning hair.  Like saying, "It's awful."  My point was that maybe to you it is "awful" but to Ed Harris, or anyone else that keeps their thinning hair, maybe they aren't so self-conscious that they feel the need to shave it.  It's almost like a double standard around here with some people.  Some people around here want to talk about how they love to be sly and they can't stand negative feedback about shaving their head.  Or how they can't stand people judging them because they shave their head.  Then I see those same people bashing "others" just because the "others" don't shave like they do.   ???

You know what man...I don't know how serious you were about the statement you made?  The one where you said, "Guess my time here is over."  But don't go anywhere.  Because I'll leave again.  This is why I left the first time a long while back.  That is, the time before I was banned for standing up for this site.  Because I thought this was supposed to be a forum where you can come and have a difference of opinion without worrying about stepping on other people's toes.  But it's like every time I give it another try here someone wants to get all bent out of shape about something as soon as the discussion isn't in total agreement with what the other person says.  To be honest, I'm really not sure how things work here anyway.  I mean, I was banned from here in the past for standing up for this site while other people that had bashed SBG were allowed to roam freely on here still.  Now that deserves a WTF?   ???

You don't mean that BA! I agree with you buddy, a clean shaved head  is the ultimate look. Ed Harris, Billy Zane, and Jesse Ventura have opted to sport their horseshoe. Why would they make such a backward choice? I say they're just plain lazy.

Cool or uncool, I have a full head of hair that I opt to shave 'cause I like it, my wife likes it, and it's the perfect haircut for my active lifestyle.

I agree with Lance on most of his points.
Although many people come to this forum for different reasons, I came to SBG to help build confidence in my MPB.  Shaving my head was/is a liberating experience, but if other men can achieve confidence with a horse shoe, more power to them.

I really don't understand what this tempest in a teapot is all about.  I have not once, in the two years that I've been a member  here, seen anyone being bashed for not shaving his head.  In fact, this is probably the most non-judgmental group on the web that I've ever come across.

Stating an opinion about a celebrity's appearance is not "bashing", and is fair game as far as I'm concerned.

Sure, they're fair game and that's all good.  Just like any topic is fair game.  But you don't consider calling whatever you are talking about "awful" a form of bashing someone?  What if someone said that because you shaved your head you look "awful?"  Now being honest, tell me that you would not be a little offended.  I bet then you would consider that someone "bashing" you for shaving your head.

Baldandre, Razor, and anyone else that feels I may have taken this thread to a unnecessary level...I really have no personal problem with you at all.  I guess I just get to passionate about some of the topics on here once in a while.  I guess that's why a forum just is not meant for me.  I didn't mean anything hurtful I may have said on here.  It's just that we are supposed to be this positive community and we all seem to be nice guys.  Accepting of others no matter what.  We all talk about name calling toward us sometimes because we shave our heads.  We talk about how people are so simple minded because they stereotype us because of us shaving our heads.  We say how ignorant those kind of people are.  We all shave our heads for different reasons.  Whether it's because of thinning or balding hair, just to have a different hair style, or whatever the reason.  Any reason we do is fine and that's our choice.  Nobody has any right to judge us before they know us just because we chose to shave our heads.  So why should we judge people that really do not care if their hair is thinning and want to keep it.  To be honest, I kind of envy those kind of people.  The reason being is because I think they actually might be more self secure than some of us.  I know that some guys on here, and in general, only shave their heads just to try something different.  Those people or not balding or thinning.  But the ones of us who are thinning and balding...Why is it exactly that we shave it?  Is it because we are so self-conscious that we worry so much about what people will think of us if we just leave our hair alone?  Hmmm?  So to me, I believe those actors and just regular "joes" that leave their thinning hair alone are probably more happier with themselves.  I'm actually glad this thread was made and that it got "out of hand."  It has given me a new perspective on this whole thing.  Much love and peace to all the people at SBG.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... more power to anyone who is confident with their bald OR balding head.

We are not better because we shave our heads, we are better because we have gained confidence through doing so.

My view is that we are a positive community that supports each other, we don't need to resort to finding bad pictures of men losing their hair to make us feel better. I think we all have enough old photos of ourselves to look at should we ever need backing that we're doing the right thing.

Side note:
BALDANDRE, you are always one of the first people to pump a bald or balding brother up, and for that I respect you brother!

Now its my turn >:(     I'm sorry for the rant to follow but it need to be said, I know it long but please read.

The purpose of this site is to help those who have a problem with MPB. It is a place for them to come and get a bit of confidense back from us and the things that we have gone through. As I under stood it we were only against rugs, drugs, and plugs. We have always told the fencers that they needed to do what makes them feel better about themselves no matter if they shaved or not. I do agree that every time a thread is started about someone with MPB and we've made stupid comments about they're hair, whether its intended to be in juest or not it is still bashing. I remember a thread where Carlin stated a similar comment about shaved white guys and we all took major offense. Guess what. same same.

I don't think anyone needs to leave over this but, I do think we need to start playing nice and quit this stupid sh*t. We are adults here and we should be able to have an opinion without some one bashing us or getting there feelings hurt. We need to grow up and quit picking on people and getting all bent out of shape when someone does make a comment that we might not like. Just like we tell the newbies, it really has no effect on our own lives what some one else might think of a certain comment, so let it roll off your shoulder and move the hell on.

I love this site and shaving my head as much if not more than the next member here, but I also don't agree with everything that goes on all the time, but there is alot that I do agree with so it does balance out.

So stop bashing or picking on people, for whatever reason, and if some just has to make a stupid comment that might just offend you then just say screw it and move on to one of hundreds of other great topics to read and respond to.

Well said, Nomad!  O0

For those of you that were members of SBG when I signed up in late 2006, you might remember that I promised The Lovely Mrs. Schro that I wouldn't shave my head until New Year's Day 2007 (just in case of family holiday pictures...shock value I guess). Well, I began buzzing it with a #1 clipper guard during the 2006 Christmas Season. I absolutely loved the look and received a ton of compliments! I would probably keep the #1 buzz setting if it weren't for the fact of the relief I get from sebhorreic dermatitis by shaving my head.

So, like Nomad said, this site is about helping guys deal with male pattern baldness the best way possible and a shot of confidence.....oh, and having fun meeting some great people!

I think the shoe looks good on some people. What doesn't look so good is that thin wispy hair on top that someone is trying to style to make up for lack of density. I think the bald head with the hair on the sides is a masculine look as long as they don't grow it out to look like bozo the clown. Comon, that looks silly. Ed Harris looks good.

I go a week at times without shaving and don't mind my MPB at all. In fact I think the stubble looks good. I'm a man, a 40 year old man and I don't find MPB the least bit embarrassing. Thankfully it looks better shaved, clipped or stubble. I've come to realize that my lack of self confidence wasn't so much my MPB but was more the bad style I thought I was stuck with.

I have yet to see a good looking comb over or sprayed wispy doo.

My mother has told me on a number of occasions (though not recently) that my shaved head looks awful.  I didn't feel as though I were being bashed.  I don't really care if other people don't like my shaved head.  It's their problem, not mine.

I remember a thread where Carlin stated a similar comment about shaved white guys and we all took major offense. Guess what. same same.

It's not the same.  The Carlin comments, as I recall, were rather offensive.  Calling someone a "goofy, baldy-headed f**k" and saying that someone should be strapped to a gurney and castrated with a fishing knife are way over the top.  How do you draw a moral equivalency between that, and this particular thread, which started with a post that basically said that Ed Harris would look better if he shaved his head?

Once again, I have to say this whole thing is a tempest in a teapot.  I really don't understand why some of you are so upset by this thread.  I would have thought that a comment that someone would look better with a shaved head on a forum devoted to headshaving would be somewhat non-controversial.   ???

Really it was kinda weird guys...we are all fully bald here...and full of confidence BECAUSE of it whether BBC or MPB...do not forget that and how YOU felt before you shaved your head smooth..

great he has confidence to wear it...more power to him.. but it's an ugly look (what's the comb over thread about anyways?!?)..

I just think some of us have forgotten how empowering it was once we did it..and should NOT take it for granted...

Balding dudes come here for help..not for us to say "buck up and embrace what you look like, it's what dudes do...and offer no encouragement to shave it smooth and regain their confidence"...

I hope you get what I mean....

Just remember this though, this place is called SLY BALD GUYS, not SLY BALDING GUYS...

and we all know there is a HUGE difference between the two..

if there wasn't you wouldn't be here and there would be a heck of a lot more depressed MPB dudes out there thinking that hair restoration is their only option and they've been dealt the worst card ever...

Don't mean to ramble...but I think these types of places and encouragment are important...I hope you all get what I'm saying.

Listen up. If you're handsome you're gonna be handsome with hair,no hair and thinning hair. And if you're ugly you're gonna be ugly with all these things. Jason Statham is living proof of that.He looks great. The things that make a person ugly are rotten, missing and crooked teeth and a big nose.Whatever is going on on the top of your head is fine as long as it's groomed well.

True to a point..but you can't tell me guy's looks (around here for example, just check out some before and afters)...there is NO WAY you can say their looks weren't improved,,,

thus making them "better looking"..really it's crazy we're having THIS conversation on THIS forum?!? :/O

This place is the place that promotes that shaving your head smooth will possibly help to both build up ones confidence and improve their looks.

You guys are missing the point

Yes we promote shaving, BUT we don't condemn or pick on those that are very comfortable with who they are no matter if the shave or not.

Thats what kids in grade school do, they're not like us so lets make fun of them, that is not what we're all about.

I'm with you all the way about shaving being the best thing going to combat hair loss and build confidence

I wasn't going to respond to this one, but I just gotta say Nomad, you hit it dead on bro!
 O0

People from all over come to this site looking for encouragement, answers, and any info they can find on possibly shaving their heads. They get it when they come here, and I certainly know I did. They also make a few friends along the way.

Lance had a valid point when he touched on this thread. It seems a few of you guys think it's okay to pick out people and say they should be shaving, or comment on their looks. You know who you are. I definitely don't agree with your singleing people out, and stating they need to look a certain way.
I've always felt that if someone is ready to shave, then they will shave. Certainly your bashing and picking out these celebs isn't going to make them do it any quicker. It's pointless. Why do you even care what said celeb chooses to do?, do you think this person cares what you're going to do? I don't think so.

You need to stop worrying about celebs and other stars and quit the bashing. It is a bit immature.
I also happen to think that Jason Statham looks awesome, and as I've said before, it is he who gave me the influence to buzz down originally.

I also have to say to Lance, why do you feel you can't have a difference of opinion?.
There's no need to run just because of a disagreement. You can choose not to reply. I think it's a character flaw that certain guys just can't stand not to have things go their way. Look at JohnMont.
I got news for you guys, either way, buzzed or shaved, people still think we're bald.

So let me get this straight, we're no longer allowed to say that someone would look better with a shaved  head because that is bashing?

Welcome to SBG, Politically Correct Edition.  Looking forward to more of those "do you put the end of the toilet paper roll over or under?" topics.   ::)

This, like all Internet forums are guaranteed one thing.

If there is more than one member, there is bound to be an opposing view eventually. I struggle with the fact that someone might not agree with what's right (aka, "my way") and sometimes it comes out wrong or in bad fashion.

Sometimes the hardest thing to do on a forum is to state your OPINION and move on... even after someone else states theirs.

I do love this pic though... kind of sums it all up and I think we've all been there, heck... I'm doing it right now!

I've always kind of been a "protector."  I don't know why.  Especially if someone isn't around to defend themselves.  I was the guy in school when someone not too popular was being picked on would stand up for them and put myself in between them and the person doing the picking.  Always felt kind of bad for the "little guy."

Same here for me too, guys. I didn't mean for anyone to feel like I was attacking them, and if it did, I truly apologize. I know sometimes we're strong on our opinions, and we are all entitled to them.
No ill feelings, let's keep it smooth, bro's.   8)
