Title: How long do you stay smooth?
Post by: Razor X on October 24, 2008, 07:04:28 PM
We hear all the time about guys who shave their heads twice daily to stay smooth.   I shaved around 6:30 this morning.  It's now 9:00 and my head is still basically smooth.  A couple of spots are getting a little sandpapery, but there isn't enough stubble for the razor to catch if I attempted to shave it.  It usually takes me about a full 24 hours to grow enough stubble for the razor to do its job.  After that first 24 hours, it seems to grow more quickly.  Delaying a shave an hour or two makes a huge difference in the amount of hair that needs to be removed.

Razor.... how's it going?

i shaved at 11:00AM and now at 9:10 PM I have just the slightest sandpaper. I'm good until morning.

I usually shave between 8 and 9 am.....by 5 or 6 pm I can feel the stubble start to come out as my hair grows real fast. If I am going out at night to something special I will usually shave again before I go, but that is a rare occasion.... O0

I usually shave about 6:30a, and if I do the full works, oil, Headslick & alcohol, and do a second quick one, then I'm smooth until late evening when it gets about 000 sandpaper.  I did a shower shave this past week at 7:30a, because I got up late and had to really move, and w/o the alcohol and second quick one, the sandpaper was there by 5p.

I shave about 5:30 am every weekday morning.  It's 9:30 pm and I have slight sandpaper, but not enough to shave.  The Bald Guyz shave gel and Fusion razor keep it smooth.

I usually shave about 5:30 a..m.   If it is a daily shave I will stay pretty smooth until 3 or so.    If I should have to skip a day I will stay slick for a good 14-16 hours.

About 8 hours - some sandpaper spots show up earlier.  Strange, but it seems what's left on the mpb areas grows faster than the thicker areas.  Anyone else notice this?

Right now it's Saturday and I haven't shaved my head for almost 36 hour - the longest I've gone since going full-time sly.  Had an early day yesterday so I shaved the night before - what a waste sleeping through the smoothest part of my day!

Most definately, I don't know if it's just the "bad grass" trying to show that it's still there or if it's because those areas have the thinnest "skin to bone" on my head.  I've decided to give the noggin a "shaving rest" this weekend, and I haven't cleaned up since Thursday morning.  Although the "goal" is a clean head Monday morning, I'm not sure I'll make it, the stubble is about ready to drive me straight to the blade.

Like Paul I shave early and it ususally lasts about 8-10 hours before I begin noticing some stubble. If I incorporate Secret Shave with Head Slick seems to last a bit longer though.

I shave around 5am every weekday.  By 2pm I have the stubble (Return of the Shadow).  I don't think shaving twice in the same day would do any good for me, very small and fine hairs.

With the HeadBlade I usually stay smooth for at least 15 hours or so.  I can definitely feel that sandpaper feeling by morning if I shaved the morning before.  But I still let it go at least another day because my scalp is a little too sensitive to shave everyday.

I'm smooth anywhere from 10-15 hours. Recently I've gotten more used to going against the grain in back, from nape to top, and it really makes a big difference.

Been super smooth lately and I'm lovin' it!    O0

I start to feel that sandpaper feeling after about 8 hours.  I'm lazy though, I don't really like to shave, so I only shave once a week unless I have an office meeting or something.

I get sandpapery after about ten hours on average, but it all depends on the newness of the blade and the time I shave.  Early morning shaves don't seem to last so long as later ones.  New-blade-shaves last about ten to twelve hours, but shaves with a week-old blade might only last six or seven. 8)

I usually only shave every second or even third day. I find that the results are better and also because I work two jobs and sometimes only have time for a shower then bed in the evening (too tired to shave). I do notice stubble after 12 hours though.

Hello all.  New guy... both to this forum, and to being a slick top.

I must be some kind of freak... I shave about 5:30 am, and by 9am I have about 1200 grit sandpaper going on.  By lunchtime, I have visible stubble.

I am still new to this, and don't get a perfectly close shave yet... but it is pretty smooth.

I do have very thick hair, and a full head of it, so it is difficult to keep it at bay.

I shaved for the first time on Friday, and headbladed it on Sunday.  I am really liking the headblade so far... it is very different than a normal razor, that is for sure.

RATyson, are you shaving with or against the grain?  Against the grain will keep it smoother longer.  Also the preparation will help with a closer shave, such as exfoliating and using a creme like Headslick.

Well, I shave from the front to the back in long strokes.  So, basically against the grain in the front, and with the grain in the back.
I am going to try both directions tomorrow, as well as the sensor 3 blades (I use a sensor razor normally on my face).
Even with that, I do get it pretty smooth.  I know I can get a closer shave with more practice though.

I am going to get some HeadSlick, and the HeadBlade shaving cream in the near future and see how that helps out.  I have heard nothing but good stuff about the HeadBlade products.

With good prep, plenty of HOT water and an oil, glad to say I can stay smooth for most of the day, anything to 12, 14hrs or so.

Ok.. so I am getting much better with the HeadBlade, and I got some HeadSlick shave cream.  I am now getting a MUCH closer shave.

However... I am still ending up with stubble by mid day.  So I just shave every morning.  Not bad though, as I am enjoying the zen of shaving.... lol

I don't seem to have a whole lot of stubble when I first get up, but by the time I'm in the shower my scalp feels pretty sandpapery.

At the moment I am shavin every second day. Hope my head toughens up as my scalp was quite tender yesterday. quite sandpapery today but not too noticeable (mainly cos there was hardly any hair left before I shaved anyway- hee hee)

I've been doing a little experiment and it seems to support my long standing belief that if you can wait an hour or two before shaving you get the longest lasting smooth shave.  I have  also been trying doing the first pass in the shower and the second after getting out.  It's about the same degree of smooth, but again, the shower has to be after an hour or the stubble is back by noon, especially the "bad grass".

It will be tender for the first few times, but once you get some sun on your scalp and get a good sunburn, youre ready for anything your razor can dish out. haha.

I usually last about 8-10 hours until i have a velcro-effect going on.

My story is very similar to yours, It was worse before trying headblade products.  Now that I use all headblade products and shavers secret I'd say I stay smooth until late afternoon.  Stuble is present by the time I get home (6-7pm).

I shave it slick before work, and the first signs of roughness start 12 hours post shave, stubble at 18 hours, and velcro at 24 hours..... not enough for me to shave everyday, until my skin adjusts to the blade again.

Well, I'm at the other end of the spectrum.  I've only shaved my head about 3 or 4 times in my life, and each time it was with an electric razor (scared to death of blades).  The first day it is of course very smooth and  feels kind of rubbery, like my scalp is made out of latex.   The second day my scalp feels like it has a really thin crust on it, like some salt water had evaporated on it and left a micro-thin deposit of salt.  By the third day, I can feel the sandpaper.  Guess it's because I'm old and my hair grows slower than most people's.

I stay pretty smooth for day 1, day 2 is sandpaper, and if I stretch it to day 3 it starts to feel like the lawn.

I shaved every day (sometimes more than once) for a while because I was new to the head shaving thing and loved the smooth dome feel. But recently, I've been having these disastrous screw-ups and I've been slicing my head up really bad because I'm in a hurry, so I usually only shave every other day (if that).

Since I leave for school at about 6:15, I shave about 5:30. Stubble's back by 1:00, and sandpaper shows up by the next morning.

Try shaving just before you go to bed.  You'll get sandpapery a few hour earlier in the day, but it eliminates the need to rush through the shaving process in the morning.  As time goes by, you'll get more skilled at shaving and will also probably have less hair to shave, so it should go a little faster.

Shave at the sink after shower:  Shave Secret + HB Atra Plus at 6:00am

Fine sandpaper by 6:00pm, but not bad.  I take longer than most to shave, but I haven't been able to cut any time off even after 1+yr. w/ a HB.  15 minutes, but it's smooo-ooo-oo-ooo-th when I'm done.

I try to shave before bed because Im lazy and rush out the door. The only time Ive had a slice yet was rushing in the morning. :-[

If I shave at roughly 10pm by around noon I can feel the sandpaper, and by the time I shave again its like a furry little chia-pet sprouting on top of my head, but not on my neck. Around the ears and on the crown, but the Strip of neck will stay smooth for two days.

When I first started shaving I would be smooth for maybe 8 hours. Now I dont know if its because I am getting old so I dont have as much hair to shave or if its because my hair is growing slower. Normally I shave at about 5:30-6 in the mornings and I dont get the sandpaper feel until around 9 or 10 at night.

Your shaving technique has probably improved; that's why you're staying smooth longer.

Not long enough !!  :D

I find that when I shave my head in the morning - about 6 am i'm getting the sandpapery patches back by lunchtime.

There are times when I find myself having to shave twice a day.  However if I shave last thing at night the smoothness tends to last a little longer.

I agree with the majority. After about 8-10 hrs, I start to go into my "sandpaper mode" and so, to stay as smooth as humanely possible, I find it necessary to shave the ol' noggin twice daily (the first being around 5:30am)

But with each shave, I find I am getting better and better at shaving w/less and less nicks/cuts/irritation, and (less) blood transfusions (LOL).

Through experimentation, I have discovered that by combining HeadWash (by HeadBlade) and Bald Guyz Shave Gel, I get a super, duper long-lasting shine. The combination seems to "polish" the head as it preps the scalp for shaving.

But then again, shaving@ the firehouse can be quite hazardous. Imagine having an extremely, sharp blade pressed against your scalp and a very loud alarm sounds WITHOUT warning!!  g@@4

It's quite an adventure, to say the least!   D!u!
